The most effective drugs for treating cough in pediatric patients include herbal syrups. They not only relieve painful attacks, but also increase the body's resistance to viruses and bacteria, and stimulate the protective properties of the immune system.
Herbion preparations are characterized by a complex herbal composition that effectively combats unpleasant symptoms. Syrups are allowed for children over two years old, since younger children have a risk of worsening respiratory symptoms. Medicines with primrose extract and ivy are prescribed for wet, that is, productive cough. They speed up recovery from colds, acute respiratory infections, acute respiratory viral infections, flu, bronchitis, tracheitis. Syrup with plantain is recommended only for dry cough.
Cough is a protective reaction of the body to the action of factors that disrupt the breathing process. There may be many reasons for this painful condition. But most often, the unpleasant symptom is associated with inflammatory processes in the body, damage to the upper and lower respiratory tract.
What kind of cough is gerbion for? Dry or wet?
Various medications are used for treatment. The most effective and safe is Gerbion. It consists of herbal components and is suitable for treating the following types of cough:
- Dry (non-productive) - occurs with laryngitis, pharyngitis, tracheitis, pleurisy, whooping cough, acute respiratory viral infections, flu. Characterized by an exhausting course, can lead to vomiting. The following Herbion drugs are suitable for treatment: Icelandic moss syrup and plantain syrup. The herbal remedy gently envelops the inflamed mucous membrane, suppresses attacks, fights pathogenic microorganisms.
- Wet (productive, with expectoration) – coughing fits with expectoration. Ivy syrup and primrose syrup from Gerbion promote expectoration of mucus and liquefy it, preventing various complications.
Herbal medicines speed up the healing process, have a minimum of contraindications and are suitable for treating patients over two years of age.
Indications Gerbiona for the baby
Gerbion is prescribed for the treatment of dry and wet cough in children and adults. The drug is recommended for patients who prefer herbal medicines.
The main indications for the use of Gerbion are:
- Spasmolytic cough of any etiology.
- Infectious diseases of the respiratory tract.
- Colds and acute respiratory viral infections.
- Tracheitis.
- Bronchitis.
- Pneumonia.
- Flu.
- Smoker's cough.
- Senile cough.
The syrup contains immunomodulatory components that protect the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract and strengthen the immune system. Plantain syrup is recommended for the treatment of dry cough without signs of sputum discharge in children. It has a pronounced antitussive and expectorant effect.
Gradually, with a dry cough, phlegm begins to accumulate in the respiratory tract. That is, the painful condition turns into a wet form. Primrose syrup is used to treat it. The drug liquefies mucus and promotes its removal from the body.
Pharmacodynamics
The pharmacological properties of cough suppressants are determined by their active components. The pharmacodynamics of plantain syrup from Gerbion is based on the interaction of several active substances:
- The leaves of the lanceolate plantain contain aucubin, which has bacteriostatic properties. It is effective in infectious lesions of the upper respiratory tract. The aglycone aucubigenin provides antibacterial action.
- Flowers of common mallow – contain mucus, tannin and malvin (anthocyanin glycoside). Envelops the mucous membrane of the upper respiratory tract, creating a protective layer that reduces coughing fits.
- Ascorbic acid – takes part in oxidation-reduction and many metabolic processes in the body. Stimulates collagen synthesis and hemoglobin formation.
The plant components act as a mucous agent in dry coughs, creating a protective coating that reduces inflammation and irritation.

Pharmacokinetics
To date, the results of pharmacokinetic studies of herbal syrups with a combined composition are unknown. But there is data on the pharmacokinetics of each of the active substances of the drug.
Mucous polysaccharides (leaves of lanceolate plantain and flowers of common mallow) act locally. They are not absorbed or metabolized. Their action is directed at the inflamed mucous membrane and the creation of a protective layer on it.
Ascorbic acid is absorbed in the duodenum and small intestine. The substance is distributed throughout the tissues and cells of the body. The highest concentrations are observed in leukocytes and thrombocytes. About 25% of the vitamin binds to plasma proteins. The active component is oxidized to dehydroascorbic acid, which continues to metabolize. Its excess is excreted unchanged in the urine.
Dosing and administration
The dosage depends on the child's age. Doses are measured using a measuring spoon or cap that comes with the medication:
- 2-7 years old 0.5-1.
- 7 to 14 years old 1-1.2.
- Over 14 years old: 2 measuring spoons 2-5 times a day.
The medicine is taken 3-5 times a day. The dosage is measured using a special spoon, which comes with the bottle of syrup. The spoon holds 5 ml of the drug. The antitussive can be taken regardless of food, with plenty of warm water or tea.
The average duration of treatment is from 5 to 21 days. In rare cases, small patients experience side effects: allergic rashes, itching of the skin, nausea, vomiting. Temporary discontinuation of the drug and medical consultation are indicated for treatment.
