Children from two years of age can already take various syrups, in particular those that contain plant components. Many doctors recommend using at this age drugs that are classified as herbal preparations. They contain active substances of plant origin: tannins, phytoncides, phytohormones, glycosides, steroids and other components.

They also have an anti-inflammatory and immunostimulating effect, which allows not only to effectively combat the inflammatory and infectious process, but also to stimulate the activity of the immune system, forcing the body to mobilize its internal resources, activate natural defense mechanisms to overcome the disease.

Let's look at the basic recipes for syrups that are effectively used to treat inflammatory and infectious processes that cause coughing.

To prepare any syrup, there is a certain universal algorithm, which is the basic component for its preparation. In order to prepare the syrup, you need to:

  1. Carefully select the components included in the syrup. This means that all components should be well combined with each other, should not neutralize each other's action, but on the contrary, enhance it.
  2. Select a base on which to make the product – sugar solution, honey, or sugar-honey water.
  3. Combine the base and the active ingredient. To do this, take about a glass of water, dissolve sugar or honey (or sugar and honey) in it, which are necessary for preparing the syrup. Then take the active plant extracts, add them to the syrup, and heat them. However, do not bring them to a boil. You need to wait until the solution begins to boil a little, then immediately set it aside, cover it with a tight lid, or pour it into a thermos and let it brew for 30-40 minutes.
  4. Syrups should be taken in accordance with the dosage recommended by the doctor. Self-medication is not recommended, especially when treating children. Usually, syrups are recommended for children under 2 years of age, one teaspoon up to 3-4 times a day.

When studying various syrups used to treat coughs, it was noted that herbal syrups are the most effective. Various herbs can act as the active substance. Syrups based on various herbal infusions, which include several components, have proven themselves well.

In case of a strong progressive cough that does not allow the child to fall asleep, painful and exhausting, high temperature, shortness of breath, use a syrup prepared on the basis of a collection of licorice root, chamomile flowers, hop cones, plantain leaves. To prepare the syrup, take the plant components in equal proportions, pour boiling water over them.

In case of chest cramps, severe coughing fits accompanied by shortness of breath, suffocation, chest pressure, copious sputum secretion, use a syrup based on a collection of calendula flowers, valerian, peppermint (St. John's wort). If the syrup is prepared for a girl, you need to add mint, if for a boy - St. John's wort. Girls should not be given St. John's wort, and boys - mint, since they contain phytohormones of the male and female types, respectively. They affect the further hormonal development of the child according to the male or female type.

Sometimes a cough can occur due to nervous and mental overstrain, stress, internal discomfort, excitement, anxiety. If anxiety, fear, tearfulness, panic before attacks appear, it is also recommended to add a small amount of motherwort leaves or grass to the syrup.

If the cough is accompanied by a runny nose and sneezing, use a decoction of a collection based on calamus, plantain, and flax seed. For a severe cough, you can also take a syrup based on a decoction of fennel seeds, carrot seeds, and licorice root.

If the phlegm is thickened, difficult to remove, accompanied by a strong cough that does not bring relief, use a syrup from a collection of bergenia marsh, sea buckthorn, coltsfoot, violet. You can drink it every other day, alternating the above syrup with a syrup prepared on the basis of a collection of licorice root, elecampane, plantain and marshmallow.

If the cough is accompanied by a severe attack of suffocation, as well as with spasms, a syrup based on a collection of stevia, nettle, and echinacea is used. In addition to the antitussive and anti-inflammatory effect of the syrup, it also has an immunostimulating and antiviral effect. You can also add coltsfoot for a wet cough, since it helps to liquefy phlegm and remove it from the body.

Combination cough syrups for children

Combination syrups are syrups that contain herbal ingredients, as well as chemically synthesized substances, such as antibiotics, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic and other drugs (tablets).

For lingering colds, the syrup is prepared from a mixture of chamomile leaves and eleutherococcus. Aspirin tablets can be added to the mixture (at a rate of 3-4 tablets per glass of syrup). Before adding, it is necessary to crush in a spoon or mortar. Aspirin relieves inflammation, normalizes body temperature, normalizes blood counts, and improves heart function. With decreased resistance, fatigue, and loss of strength, add rose hips or hawthorn berries.

If the cause of the cough is an inflammatory process, an infectious process, it is advisable to add an antibiotic to the syrup. It is taken for sore throat, dry cough. To prepare the syrup, a collection of coltsfoot, plantain leaves, and licorice root is used as the main active ingredient. Also add 2 tablets (1000 mg) of ciprofloxacin, pre-crushed in a tablespoon or mortar. In case of a protracted cold, you can add horsetail grass.

For a wet cough, take a syrup based on a mixture of marshmallow root, licorice and coltsfoot leaves with the addition of an anti-inflammatory agent - nimesil (1 packet per glass of syrup). For a protracted form, add marsh wild rosemary herb and half a paracetamol tablet (pre-crush in a spoon or mortar).
