Although productive coughing is easier to dry, it will pass more quickly if the body is helped to remove the mucus from the bronchi, relieve their spasm, and overcome an infection of the respiratory tract. This task is successfully handled by the combined drug Ascoril.[1]

Indications Askorila when coughing

Ascoril is used in wet cough with a different pathology initiation mechanism (viral, bacteriological, allergic) [2]. These may be the following diseases and infections of the lower respiratory tract:

  • bronchitis;
  • traheobronchit;
  • pertussis;
  • pneumonia;
  • bronchial asthma;
  • tuberculosis;
  • cystic fibrosis;
  • pneumoconiosis.

Dry cough is not treated with this drug.

Release form

For ease of use, all age groups ascoril is produced in two dosage forms: syrup (more acceptable for babies) and tablets (older children and adults), although the medicine can be taken by all.

Pharmacodynamics

The preparation combines 3 components, two of which have a mucolytic action and one - a bronchodilator. Cough most often develops due to viral infection of the upper respiratory tract.

On the walls of the tracheebronchial tree sputum is formed, from which the body is trying to get rid of by inhaling, forced expiration, increased tone, not only the respiratory muscles, but also the abdominal ones.

Ascoril contains:

  • salbutamol - beta-2 agonist, relaxes muscles, relieves bronchospasm, increases lung volume, has the characteristics of an adrenergic stimulator, improves the removal of viruses and bacteria from the respiratory tract; [3], [4]
  • Bromhexine - has an expectorant effect, increases the volume of the secret, dilutes and promotes its removal from the body; [5]
  • Guaifenesin - reduces the viscosity of sputum, reflex stimulates their discharge. [6]

Pharmacokinetics

Salbutamol is absorbed in the digestive tract, its bioavailability is 50-85% regardless of food intake. Concentrates in the blood in 1-4 hours. Its overwhelming majority is excreted by the kidneys and only 1-7% with feces.

Bromhexine is metabolized in the liver to the metabolite Ambroxol, the largest percentage in serum is observed in an hour. The period of its half-life is 6 hours, it comes out mainly with urine.[7]

Gvayfenezin - more than half of it is hydrolyzed in the blood in the form of lactic acid. It takes 7 hours to do this. Displayed with urine.[8]

Dosing and administration

The duration of treatment is determined by the doctor. Usually - 3 times a day.

Syrup is recommended for small patients 2–6 years of age at a dose of 5 ml, 6–12 years old — 5–10 ml, for children after 12 years and for adults — 10 ml three times a day. Before use, it is well shaken. Syrup should not be given to children for longer than a week.

A tablet preparation at the age of 6-12 years old is prescribed in 0.5-1 units at a time, the rest on a pill with a frequency of 3 times a day.

In terms of effectiveness, 96% of doctors evaluated Ascoril as a drug with “very high efficacy” in the  treatment of cough in children.[11]
