Toothache in children can be very painful and cause a lot of suffering.

The causes of a child's toothache may be a disease of the teeth themselves, gums, or a combination of both. Let's look at them in more detail. Otherwise, how can we help the child?

Causes toothache in a child

Caries

If a child's toothache occurs during or immediately after eating, caries may be the culprit. When a piece of food is chewed, the pain can suddenly pierce the tooth - and then the child may cry and complain. If the tooth begins to hurt after sweet, sour, spicy - then it is indeed caries. With this disease, tooth enamel and dentin - the substance located under it - are destroyed.

Caries occurs after a crack or cavity is found in a tooth. A pathogenic microbe penetrates it, continuing to destroy the tooth. Since dentin and enamel are still very unstable in children, they are easy to destroy. Especially in boys and girls under 3 years old. Therefore, pain due to caries, even on baby teeth, is a very common situation.

Pulpitis

Pulpitis in a child is the second most common cause of toothache after caries. Pulp is the soft tissue of the tooth. When it is destroyed, the tooth hurts a lot. What is dangerous about pulpitis? First of all, because microbes get into the gums and jaw tissue through the affected tooth, causing their inflammation. Pain in a child with pulpitis can occur sharply, suddenly, the pain bothers the child both at night and during the day. It is difficult to determine the cause of this pain. It can bother the child during meals, and when drinking cold or hot water, and when overcooled, and even with sudden movements.

The pain of pulpitis in a child can last for a very long time, for hours. You should not delay and consult a doctor so as not to worsen the child's condition. If the pain is very strong, you can give the child a painkiller with paracetamol or ibuprofen.

Treatment toothache in a child

Pulpitis and caries are the most common causes of toothache. If a child has a toothache, you can try to help him with home remedies first.

Rinsing

Rinsing – the child can rinse the mouth with a solution of soda or salt. These ingredients kill pathogenic bacteria and thus reduce the intensity of pain. You can also brew sage or chamomile – these plants disinfect the child’s mouth well.

Disinfection

If the cavity of the diseased tooth is very large, you can soak a small cotton ball in mint oil and insert it into the diseased tooth. The same can be done with propolis.

Massage

Massage – massage the auricle in its upper part. This can reduce toothache, since there are many reflexogenic points on the auricle that affect pain receptors. The ear that needs to be massaged is the one on the side of the child’s aching tooth. The massage itself should last for 5-7 minutes.

Garlic

You can rub it on the gums in the area of the sore tooth, after peeling the garlic clove.

Treatment with plants

Place horse sorrel or valerian leaves between the aching tooth and the child’s gum.

Herbal gargle

This herb can be sage. It is brewed at the rate of 1 tablespoon of leaves per 1 glass of boiling water. Let the infusion stand for 5-7 minutes - and the potion is ready for rinsing. It disinfects and reduces the intensity of toothache in a child.

Prevention

  1. To make a child's toothache less bothersome, you need to teach him to brush his teeth correctly and regularly. To do this, you need to choose a toothbrush for your child with a pediatric dentist in accordance with the sensitivity of his teeth. The brush can be soft, medium-hard or hard. For very small children, silicone brushes are produced that the mother can put on her finger. Silicone brushes can be used to brush any number of teeth, even if there are only 2 or 3.
  2. It is especially important to pay attention to a child’s teeth after one year, because at this time baby teeth are formed and they must be protected from harmful bacteria.
  3. Avoid giving your child food and drinks that are too hot or too cold. This can damage the delicate enamel of the teeth, especially in small children.
  4. It is worth giving your child less sugar. Especially if his teeth are just growing. Sugar can destroy tooth enamel and cause toothache in children.

Don't forget to include foods with vitamins and minerals in your child's diet. And if they are not enough, feed your baby with vitamin supplements - but only on the recommendation of a doctor. And then your child's toothache will not be a problem for you.
