Severe diarrhea is observed periodically in many patients. There are many reasons for this. This phenomenon causes discomfort to a person, reduces the quality of life, limits freedom of action and ability to work. But the main disadvantage is that this condition is very painful and can lead to serious consequences and complications.
Causes severe diarrhea
The causes are very diverse. The main one is considered to be an infectious process that develops in the intestines. Usually, this is food poisoning, or dysbacteriosis, in which E. coli predominates. In most cases, the cause of the infection is non-compliance with personal hygiene rules, non-compliance with the diet, non-compliance with sanitary and hygienic requirements in public catering establishments, food enterprises and food retail facilities.
The main route of infection is the fecal-oral route, that is, through the mouth. The development of the infectious process can be facilitated by eating unwashed fruits and vegetables, undercooked meat and fish, and contaminated water. If a person does not wash his hands before eating, he can also become infected with many infectious diseases.
Secondary infection is also possible, which occurs inside the intestines with chronic infection and dysbacteriosis. Most often, this is facilitated by overeating, taking medications, such as antibiotics. After a course of antibiotic therapy, the balance of microflora is significantly disrupted. Thus, the normal microflora that maintains normal functioning of the intestine dies, its place is taken by pathogenic flora, which leads to the development of a fungal infection. With frequent overeating and improper use of products, the normal balance of microorganisms can also be disrupted. With dysbacteriosis, there is also constant irritation of the mucous membrane, as a result of which diarrhea can develop.
Many microorganisms are capable of producing a large number of toxins that have a negative effect on intestinal cells. They contribute to the destruction of cell membranes, as a result of which the fluid from the cell comes out, an excessive amount of fluid accumulates in the intestinal cavity, the feces become liquefied and are excreted in the form of severe diarrhea.
Chronic diarrhea also contributes to the development of severe diarrhea in the future. The fact is that a person who has suffered from diarrhea for about a week, the microflora completely changes. Representatives of the normal flora die, and predominantly pathogenic and opportunistic ones develop. In the future, this leads to the emergence of new cases of diarrhea.
Severe diarrhea can develop when eating stale food or when there is an individual intolerance to certain foods.
Many medications can cause diarrhea as a side effect. This is especially true for antibiotics and antibacterial drugs, and agents that increase the acidity of gastric juice.
Diarrhea often develops with food poisoning, since the mucous membrane is damaged. In cases of poisoning, diarrhea is usually quite long and exceeds 3-4 days. Various chemical agents, such as dyes, flavorings, and flavor additives, are considered the most severe for the digestive system. Severe diarrhea can be caused by acids and alkalis that have entered the intestines. Diarrhea also occurs with individual intolerance and hypersensitivity to certain substances.
Risk factors
The risk group includes people who take strong substances for a long time, especially if these are antibiotics or other antibacterial substances.
Children are always at risk, as they often neglect personal hygiene rules and eat unwashed food. Elderly people are also at risk, as they often develop dysbacteriosis. Due to their weakened immunity, they are more susceptible to the risk of infection with pathogenic microorganisms. People who work with toxic substances, alkalis, and acids are also at risk.
Pathogenesis
The pathogenesis is based on a violation of intestinal motility, in which the movement of food through the canal is significantly accelerated, and the excretion of feces is accelerated. Pathogenesis can also develop at the cellular level. In this case, cells are damaged, the integrity of the cell membrane is disrupted. This leads to the fact that fluid comes out of the intestine, is excreted in the form of severe diarrhea.
Epidemiology
According to statistics, every person has experienced severe diarrhea at least once in their life. Children suffer from diarrhea approximately 1.5 times more often than adults. In the structure of factors contributing to the development of diarrhea, infectious factors prevail - 76%, poisoning with chemical agents accounts for 12%. Chronic diarrhea is observed in 3% of cases, acute - in 88%.
Symptoms
Symptoms vary greatly depending on the type and form of the disease. But they have one thing in common - abdominal pain, spasms, loose stools. The frequency of bowel movements is 5-6 or more times a day, and the urge to defecate can be observed several times within an hour.
Itching and burning also develop, irritation in the anal area. If diarrhea continues for more than three days, weakness, fatigue, and weakened muscles are observed. Drowsiness appears. With diarrhea that lasts for more than a week, dehydration of the body occurs. This is accompanied by dry mucous membranes, pale skin, and rare urination. At the same time, the amount of urine decreases sharply. Appetite disappears, apathy develops.
In some cases, nausea and vomiting may develop. With diarrhea of infectious etiology, fever, abdominal pain, headache and muscle weakness may develop.
The development of diarrhea is indicated primarily by loose stools. The frequency of visiting the toilet increases to 4-5 times a day. There is pain in the abdomen, spasm, rumbling and a constant feeling of "movement" in the intestines.
Severe diarrhea in a child
A child often has severe diarrhea, since children's immune system is not yet fully formed, intestinal microflora is not established. Moreover, children often do not follow hygiene rules, as a result of which pathogenic microorganisms enter the digestive tract, which can cause an infectious process.
In children, diarrhea lasts longer than in adults and requires mandatory treatment. To do this, you need to see a doctor, since first you need to conduct a diagnosis, determine the cause of the pathology, and only then prescribe treatment. Severe diarrhea, which lasts for several days, greatly dehydrates the body, disrupts normal metabolic processes in the body.
Severe diarrhea in a baby
Severe diarrhea in infants can occur due to the fact that the digestive system is not yet ready for independent existence, adaptation occurs. It can also occur when consuming fatty foods, such as milk, or when there is intolerance to certain foods. Diarrhea also occurs due to the fact that the child's microflora has not yet been formed, but is only at the formation stage, the immune system is represented by the mother's defense mechanisms.
When the first signs of severe diarrhea appear in a newborn, you need to see a doctor and get treatment as soon as possible. Diarrhea can develop as a result of an infectious process, since, without its own defense system, the body is highly susceptible to pathogenic microflora. Diarrhea is dangerous for a child, since dehydration occurs very quickly.
Severe diarrhea in an adult
In adults, severe diarrhea can develop as a result of an infectious process, poisoning, disruption of the normal diet, consumption of products that are not compatible with each other, as well as individual intolerance to many components. You need to see a doctor, conduct diagnostics, and only then carry out treatment, since it is directly determined by the cause of the disease.
Severe diarrhea in pregnant women
Diarrhea in pregnant women can develop due to intoxication, intestinal motility disorders. It can be a consequence of an infectious process and dysbacteriosis. The process cannot be neglected, since it can only worsen, become chronic and cause complications. Diarrhea is dangerous because it causes metabolic disorders and dehydration. This has a negative effect on the condition of the fetus. You cannot take any measures on your own, you need to consult a doctor.
Forms
Diarrhea can be infectious, toxic, atonic. Infectious diarrhea develops as a result of an infectious process, dysbacteriosis. This also includes food toxic infections.
With toxic diarrhea, the intestinal walls are damaged by toxins, poisons, and potent chemicals.
Atonic diarrhea is characterized by a disruption of normal bowel function, and a decrease in bowel activity. This leads to a disruption in the removal of feces from the body, and stool becomes loose.
Severe watery diarrhea
Such diarrhea can be observed with a strong infection, as well as with poisoning with toxins, poisons. The cause can be such an infectious disease as cholera. It can develop against the background of taking potent drugs. It is necessary to undergo an examination and determine the cause of this condition, only after that the doctor can prescribe the correct treatment.

Severe vomiting and diarrhea
Vomiting and diarrhea are the main signs of foodborne infection. It often develops against the background of reduced immunity, with non-observance of hygiene rules. Sometimes it is observed with dysfunction of the pancreas. It leads to very rapid dehydration of the body. It is necessary to carry out rehydration therapy aimed at increasing the amount of fluid, preventing dehydration and restoring normal metabolism.
Severe stomach pain and diarrhea
Diarrhea and severe abdominal pain may indicate toxic damage to the digestive tract, an acute inflammatory process in the intestinal area.
Severe vomiting, diarrhea, fever
This may be a sign of a severe viral or bacterial gastrointestinal tract infection. Indicates the development of an infectious and inflammatory process. Requires urgent action, as it may lead to the spread of the infectious process and severe dehydration and intoxication.
High temperature can occur during the development of inflammation, during an infectious process, most often of bacterial etiology. This condition is especially dangerous for children. It is necessary to conduct diagnostics as soon as possible and select the appropriate treatment.
Severe diarrhea without fever
Severe diarrhea without fever may indicate functional disorders of the digestive tract. In this case, there is a violation of natural processes, intestinal motility. Irritation of the walls may occur. Requires treatment, since it can develop into a chronic form, cause complications. If diarrhea lasts for a long time, this can lead to the development of dehydration and persistent disruption of metabolic processes in the body.
Severe diarrhea without vomiting
If there is no vomiting, then diarrhea may indicate chronic intestinal disorders, dysbacteriosis, intolerance to certain components and food products. It may occur as a side effect of taking certain medications.
Severe diarrhea for a week
If diarrhea lasts a week or more, immediate hospitalization is required. It is necessary to urgently find out the cause and prescribe appropriate treatment. Such diarrhea leads to dehydration. Irreversible processes have already begun in the body. Therefore, urgent supportive therapy is required, rehydration therapy, which will restore the normal fluid balance in the body, normalize the exchange of salts and minerals.
Severe nausea, heartburn and diarrhea
This may be a sign of an infectious process, poisoning with chemical agents. Quite often, such signs are observed in the early stages of pregnancy, when the body is intoxicated, adapting to new conditions of functioning.
Diarrhea may be accompanied by severe heartburn, which indicates an inflammatory process not only in the intestinal area, but also in the stomach, as well as an inflammatory reaction and disruption of the normal microbiocenosis of the digestive tract.
Diarrhea with a strong odor
A strong foul odor indicates an infectious process. Most often, this is a sign of a bacterial infection. It may also indicate the development of structural and functional disorders of the intestine, mucous membrane, the presence of intestinal tumors, both benign and malignant. It may occur after prolonged constipation, which indicates stagnant and putrefactive processes in the body.
[ 24 ]
Severe pain, rumbling, cramping in the abdomen with diarrhea
Severe pain during diarrhea occurs when the intestinal walls and mucous membranes are damaged. They can be damaged by infectious and chemical agents. This happens during intestinal spasms, the development of inflammatory and infectious processes, and oncological diseases.
Rumbling indicates fermentation processes, putrefactive and stagnant phenomena in the body. Often this is the result of dysbacteriosis or an infectious disease. Requires diagnostics and urgent treatment.
Diarrhea and stomach cramps may indicate various pathologies of the stomach, intestines, intestinal microflora disorders, inflammatory processes. It is necessary to undergo an examination. Gastroscopy is considered the most effective, which gives the most complete picture of the pathology and allows you to choose treatment in the shortest possible time.
Severe diarrhea with blood
The presence of blood in the stool may indicate internal bleeding, malignant tumors and benign neoplasms. It may also be a sign of ulcers, erosions, mechanical damage to the intestinal walls.
Severe diarrhea after antibiotics
Diarrhea occurs quite often after antibiotics, since the normal ratio of microorganisms is disrupted. Representatives of the normal microflora that maintain the normal state of the digestive tract die. Their place is filled with pathogenic microorganisms and fungi.
Severe diarrhea during menstruation
Severe diarrhea can develop before, after or during menstruation. It occurs as a result of a sharp change in hormonal levels, as well as dysbacteriosis. A change in endocrine levels can lead to a sharp change in a person's immune status, as well as a violation of the normal ratio of microorganisms. Diarrhea can disappear on its own within a few days and hours, or it may require special treatment. If diarrhea does not go away within 2-3 days, you need to take measures to eliminate it. Perhaps an infection has joined, or dysbacteriosis needs to be treated.
Severe diarrhea due to poisoning
Poisoning almost always leads to severe diarrhea, sometimes even vomiting. This is often considered as a reaction of the body's natural defense to the action of toxins, the body tries to ensure the removal of the toxin. In this case, there is intense irritation of the intestinal wall by toxins, poisonous substances, and the normal intestinal flora is disrupted.
Diarrhea and severe headache
This may be a sign of intoxication, dehydration, development of complications. Often it is necessary to eliminate diarrhea, headache will disappear as a result.
[ 25 ], [ 26 ], [ 27 ], [ 28 ], [ 29 ]
Severe yellow diarrhea
This indicates the development of diarrhea of bacterial etiology. A bacterial infection, intoxication with bacterial toxins and other products of bacterial activity develops. Often requires antibacterial therapy, as well as special antibacterial therapy, restoration of normal intestinal microflora.
Severe weakness after diarrhea
After diarrhea, weakness may develop, which indicates a severe disruption of metabolic processes, intoxication, dehydration of the body. Weakness can often be a consequence of a disruption of ion exchange, microelement exchange.
Severe diarrhea without abdominal pain
Diarrhea can be painless, it is a completely natural reaction of the body. At the same time, intoxication and inflammation also develop, the level of pathogenic microflora increases.
Severe green diarrhea
Green diarrhea can develop with bacterial diarrhea. In this case, the causative agent of the disease is most often streptococcus, or Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Requires diagnostics. A bacteriological culture is mandatory, after which the sensitivity of the isolated culture to antibiotics is determined, the appropriate drug and its dosage are selected.
Constipation after severe diarrhea
Constipation may develop after severe diarrhea. It usually goes away on its own within 1-2 days and does not require any intervention. If constipation lasts more than 2-3 days, you should see a doctor. Frequent alternation of constipation and diarrhea, stool disorders, pain and spasms in the intestinal area may indicate serious disorders, including malignant tumors. Diagnostics are required. The sooner it is carried out, the more effective further treatment will be.
Severe diarrhea after alcohol
Diarrhea may develop after drinking alcohol. This may be due to the toxic effect of alcohol on the body. This is often observed when drinking low-quality alcohol, as well as when drinking it excessively. In addition, alcohol has a laxative effect on the body, increases intestinal motility.
Diagnostics severe diarrhea
In order to diagnose diarrhea, you need to see a gastroenterologist, proctologist, or infectious disease specialist. First, you need to determine the cause of diarrhea. Further treatment depends on this. When conducting an examination, first of all, the water-electrolyte state of the body and the degree of dehydration are assessed. For this, a complete examination of the abdomen, intestines, and a digital examination of the rectum are performed. The independence of the sphincter is assessed, as well as obvious and hidden blood in the feces.
An extra-abdominal examination is performed, which makes it possible to identify the cause of the disease. In this case, labrocytosis is performed, during which damage and hyperemia of the skin are assessed. The condition of the thyroid gland nodes is assessed. Auscultation is used to detect heart murmurs, possible inflammatory processes, and to listen to sounds in the intestines.

Tests
When examining diarrhea, standard clinical tests may be required, such as blood, urine, and stool tests. Stool is tested for dysbacteriosis, occult blood, and helminth content. Bacteriological culture can be very informative, as it makes it possible to identify the pathogen, determine its concentration, and select the appropriate treatment. After conducting a study on antibiotic sensitivity, the antibiotic that is most effective is determined, as well as its optimal dosage.
A biochemical blood test and a detailed immunogram may be required. In case of constant, chronic diarrhea, the acidity of gastric juice is determined and an analysis for celiac disease is performed.
They also determine the osmotic range of the stool, which shows the characteristics of the exchange of potassium and sodium in the body, shows how much the electrolyte exchange processes are disturbed. Also, if necessary, tests are carried out to determine lactase. To determine the malabsorption of carbohydrates, which can cause diarrhea, a breath hydrogen test is carried out.
[ 38 ], [ 39 ], [ 40 ], [ 41 ]
Instrumental diagnostics
Acute diarrhea often does not require special instrumental examinations; physical examination and laboratory tests are sufficient. Acute diarrhea is a form of stool pathology that lasts no more than 4 days.
In all other cases, an instrumental examination is carried out. It is especially important to carry out instrumental examinations in chronic pathology. The main methods of examination for diarrhea are gastroscopy, colonoscopy. Usually, these studies are sufficient to determine the cause of the pathology and make a diagnosis. If the data is insufficient, an ultrasound of the abdominal cavity and pelvic organs is carried out, as well as an X-ray examination. In severe cases, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) can be carried out. If an oncological process is suspected, a piece of tissue is taken for further histological examination.
Differential diagnosis
Differential diagnostics is based on the need to differentiate diarrhea from other pathologies and determine its cause. To differentiate bacterial diarrhea from viral diarrhea, virological research and bacteriological culture are carried out. An immunogram may be required.
To differentiate bacterial and viral diarrhea from toxic diarrhea, it is necessary to conduct a toxicological study. To establish other forms of diarrhea, for example, those resulting from intestinal atony, high speed of food mass movement, instrumental studies are carried out.
Treatment severe diarrhea
Treatment should be primarily etiological. First, the factor that provoked diarrhea is eliminated. Then symptomatic treatment is carried out. Antidiarrheal drugs are used, which reduce the excretion of fluid with feces, and also inhibit secretion processes in the small intestine. Also, if necessary, substances that contribute to the development of diarrhea are removed from the intestine. If salts are excreted intensively, and a violation of salt metabolism has developed, infusion, rehydration therapy is used, aimed at increasing fluid in the body and normalizing metabolic processes.
It is important to monitor the potassium content, if necessary, take potassium preparations. This element is lost when salts leave the body. Its deficiency contributes to the disruption of normal heart function and can lead to the development of heart failure. In the presence of such a pathology, therapy is carried out to replace the lost fluid.
For treatment, sorbents are used - substances that facilitate the rapid removal of toxins and metabolic products from the body. They also remove toxic substances that can cause loose stools.
What to do if you have severe diarrhea?
The first thing to do when you have diarrhea is to consult a doctor, since in treating diarrhea it is important to first eliminate the cause of the disease. Only this can guarantee successful treatment. In case of severe diarrhea, you should not allow the body to become dehydrated, since this condition is dangerous due to a sharp loss of fluid, which leads to dehydration and disruption of metabolic processes. You can use various folk remedies, homeopathic drugs aimed at reducing the fluid content in the intestines, stabilizing cell membranes. It is also important to adhere to proper nutrition.
Medicines
In case of diarrhea, medications should be taken with caution. It is important to take precautions, which consist of consulting a doctor in a timely manner. First, it is necessary to conduct diagnostics, and only then prescribe appropriate treatment.
Antidiarrheal drugs can have many side effects if taken incorrectly. They can only worsen the pathology if the treatment is chosen incorrectly. For example, dysbacteriosis can increase, which will lead to the development of chronic diarrhea. Salt metabolism and water balance can be disrupted, which leads to disruption of the vital organs: kidneys, heart.
In case of acute diarrhea, it is recommended to take loperamide. Its main effect is that it quickly stops peristalsis, thereby preventing further movement of feces through the intestines. It leads to a rapid cessation of diarrhea within 30-40 minutes. But the drug has serious consequences - it is quickly absorbed into the blood, leading to severe intoxication.
Therefore, doctors recommend that when taking loperamide, detoxification therapy should be carried out in parallel, aimed at removing toxins from the body. It is recommended to take enterosgel. Dissolve a tablespoon of the drug in a glass of water. Take 2-3 times a day.
It is also recommended to take activated charcoal as a detoxifying agent: 5-6 tablets every 4-5 hours.
In case of severe diarrhea that lasts more than 2-3 days, as well as in the presence of vomiting, you need to drink drugs that help restore the water-salt balance in the body. The most effective remedy is rehydron. To prepare a solution, dissolve 1 packet of the drug in a liter of water. Drink 2-3 glasses in a short time, then half a glass after each stool.
If pain and spasms occur, take No-shpa, 1 tablet 2-3 times a day.
Smecta for severe diarrhea
It is a white powder that is dissolved in water and drunk throughout the day. You need to drink 3-4 packets per day. It eliminates not only diarrhea, but also bloating, pain, normalizes motility and peristalsis.
Enterosgel for severe diarrhea and vomiting
It is a remedy used for detoxification of the body. It helps to remove toxins and poisons from the body, normalizes the activity of the intestines, its contractile activity. It is recommended to dissolve a tablespoon of the preparation in a glass of water, take 3-4 times a day.
Vitamins
In case of diarrhea, it is recommended to take only vitamin C, as it helps to normalize the immune system, increases the body's resistance and endurance. The body uses internal reserves to fight infection and inflammation. Other vitamins act as a nutrient medium and growth factors for bacteria, so their use should be postponed until complete recovery. Take 1000 mg per day.
Physiotherapy treatment
Physiotherapy is rarely used for diarrhea. Conservative, drug therapy is usually sufficient. Electrophoresis and ultrasound may be used in rare cases.
Electrophoresis is a procedure during which medicinal preparations are delivered directly to the tissue in which they exert their therapeutic effect. In this case, the substances penetrate through the skin and mucous membranes, bypassing the digestive tract. This makes it possible to significantly reduce the dosage and increase the locality of action, while eliminating the systemic effect on the body. It quickly helps to relieve inflammation. Eliminate the infectious process. The risk of side effects is reduced to a minimum.
Ultrasound can penetrate deep into tissues, has a warming, anti-inflammatory effect, dissolves seals, hematomas, scars. It can also eliminate bacterial infections, normalize microbiocenosis, and promote the restoration of microflora and damaged mucous membranes.
Folk remedies
There are many folk remedies that have long been used to treat diarrhea. They are recommended to be taken in combination with drug therapy, as they complement each other perfectly, accelerating recovery.
In case of diarrhea, the patient is given apple puree for 24 hours. Take 12 fresh apples, peel them, and grate them. Give the patient 1 grated apple every 2 hours during the day. The puree should also be taken at night. Nothing else should be eaten or drunk. Do not take any medications either. The diarrhea should go away within 24 hours. If it does not go away, you need to see a doctor as soon as possible, conduct a comprehensive diagnosis, and determine the cause of the pathology.
A decoction of pomegranate peel helps well with diarrhea. The peel of one pomegranate is poured with 500 ml of water and drunk throughout the day.
Also, the most reliable method is a solution of potassium permanganate. You need to prepare a slightly pink solution, drink half a glass. It has a powerful anti-inflammatory effect, kills pathogenic microflora. Therefore, the effect occurs immediately. Usually, a single dose is enough, but for prevention, you can drink another half a glass in the evening.

Herbal treatment
To treat diarrhea, take a decoction of meadow geranium. There are two options for preparation: cold decoction, hot decoction. To prepare a cold decoction, take 2 tablespoons of the herb and pour a glass of water. After this, insist for 8 hours and drink throughout the day in small sips.
To prepare a hot decoction, you will need a tablespoon of the herb. Pour a glass of boiling water over it and leave for 1-2 hours. Drink throughout the day in small sips.
Angelica officinalis also eliminates diarrhea quite quickly. To prepare a decoction, take 1 tablespoon of medicinal raw material, pour a glass of boiling water. Boil for 10 minutes in a water bath, drink a third of a glass three times a day.
Prepare a decoction from white willow. For preparation, you need 1 tablespoon of willow bark. Pour a glass of boiling water, bring to a boil and set aside. Infuse for an hour. Drink 1-2 tablespoons every hour.
The fruits of the dogwood are also often taken as a decoction. To prepare, take a tablespoon of raw material, pour a glass of boiling water. Infuse for 30 minutes, drink a quarter of a glass four times a day.
Homeopathy
It is important to understand that homeopathic remedies can have serious side effects if taken incorrectly. For example, they can only worsen the situation by increasing diarrhea or causing an overdose. Therefore, it is important to take precautions - take homeopathy only after a complete diagnosis, when the cause of the pathology is precisely determined.
Charcoal has proven itself well. If there is a choice, it is better to choose linden charcoal. Take charcoal powder 1 teaspoon per day, washed down with water. Strengthens the intestinal walls, relieves inflammation, eliminates the infectious process, normalizes intestinal motility.
If diarrhea is mixed with blood, take centipede powder. You can buy them ready-made or make them yourself. You need to collect several centipedes, heat a baking sheet or frying pan until red hot, and throw in the centipedes. Burn until ash forms. Dissolve the ash in 100 grams of vodka and drink twice a day.
Use a herbal mixture for diarrhea. To prepare, take 50 grams of bird cherry and blueberry fruits and mix. Take 2-3 tablespoons from the mixture and pour boiling water over it. Leave for an hour, then take a third of a glass three times a day.
You can also make a decoction from fruits and herbs. To prepare, take black chokeberry fruits, St. John's wort, raspberries or strawberries, mint in a ratio of 2:1:2:1. Mix, take 2-3 tablespoons from the resulting mixture, pour 2-3 glasses of boiling water, and leave for 24 hours. Drink a third of a glass every 2 hours.
Diet for severe diarrhea
Diarrhea requires diet, otherwise it will be impossible to cure it. All dishes should be soft, gentle. You can eat only boiled or steamed food. Fried, fatty, smoked food should be completely excluded. Spices, seasonings cannot be added. Read more about the diet for diarrhea in this article.
What to eat when you have severe diarrhea?
It is necessary to include in the diet black bread with bran, stale pastries, biscuits. Only dietary meat and fish, boiled sausages are allowed. You can drink fermented baked milk, kefir, cottage cheese, sour milk. It is recommended to drink lemon juice dissolved in water, eat blueberries, viburnum, raspberries, cranberries. You can include an unlimited number of crackers, croutons, dried fruits.
Rice broth is effective for diarrhea.
Legumes and soy are completely excluded. Fresh bread, pastries, pies, sweets are prohibited. Also, fatty meats such as pork and beef are prohibited. Smoked sausages, whole milk, cream, and sour cream are excluded. Tomatoes, cabbage, plums, and apricots are prohibited. Raisins, nuts, and semolina porridge are also prohibited.
Complications and consequences
Diarrhea is dangerous because it can lead to dehydration. This has a negative effect on metabolism, disrupts normal bowel function, food is poorly processed, and is not absorbed by the body. Dehydration disrupts normal ion processes and microelement metabolism. It has a particularly negative effect on the health of older people and children. Newborns also develop dehydration quite quickly.
With the growth of inflammatory processes and dehydration, the temperature rises. This leads to a high degree of intoxication of the body, rapid denaturation of proteins. As dehydration increases, electrolyte imbalance increases. Gradually, the skin becomes dry, the mucous membranes also dry out and lose their protective functions, there is a strong thirst, rapid breathing, pulse, rare urination. This leads to disruption of kidney function, weakness, dizziness.
Normal blood circulation in the body is disrupted, and sodium-potassium metabolism is disrupted. This leads to an intense loss of potassium and excessive accumulation of sodium. As a result, normal heart function is disrupted, heart failure may develop, which quite often ends in death.
Prevention
The main preventive measure is considered to be compliance with hygiene rules, as well as sanitary and hygienic requirements for the preparation of food products. Before eating, you need to wash your hands thoroughly, and it is better to use laundry soap, since it has a powerful antibacterial effect. You also need to be careful when preparing meat, fish, eggs, boil them well.
It is also important to remember that if there is no soap in a public place, it is better not to wash your hands at all, since rinsing with water will not destroy microorganisms, but will only create more favorable conditions for their reproduction.
If one of the family members has fallen ill with rotavirus infection, food poisoning, and has developed severe diarrhea, it is necessary to protect the rest of the family from contact with him. The patient should be given separate dishes and a towel.
Forecast
If diarrhea lasts 1-2 days, the prognosis may be favorable. The disease may go away on its own, without any measures. Only diet may be required.
If diarrhea lasts more than 3 days, it is necessary to conduct diagnostics and treatment. If the necessary measures are taken in a timely manner, the prognosis may be favorable. Otherwise, severe diarrhea is fraught with complications. The most dangerous is dehydration, which can even end in death.
