Indications for use

Indications for the use of rice broth include diarrhea of non-infectious etiology, gastroenteritis, intestinal disorders due to a decrease in the natural microbiota (dysbiosis), persistent diarrhea.

How does a rice decoction of diarrhea?

100 grams of raw white rice contains 80 g of carbohydrates in the form of starch, and starch consists of polysaccharides, including amylose (not to be confused with the digestive enzyme amylase). Amylose is more resistant to digestion and is an effective prebiotic, that is, it stimulates the growth and activity of beneficial bacteria that colonize the large intestine, and the amount of which decreases significantly during diarrhea.

In addition, the amylose spiral chains are capable of binding water, and something like a gel forms in the intestine, that is, the liquid stool becomes thicker, and as a result, diarrhea ceases.

Also, rice contains almost all the B vitamins, and most of all - vitamin B3 (PP or niacin), which helps to neutralize toxins produced by the bacteria Clostridium spp., Klebsiella spp., Proteus mirabilis, Escherichia coli, etc., which, with diarrhea, can multiply actively in the intestine.

And in the rice there is zinc (more than 2 mg per 100 g of raw and 0.4 mg after cooking), which, as studies have shown, reduces the duration of acute intestinal disorders.

The way of application and the dose of the resulting broth

The resulting room temperature broth is taken internally. Rice decoction from diarrhea to an adult or adolescent should be drunk in 60-70 ml (3-5 tablespoons) - up to four to five times a day (in between meals). Some doctors do not limit the intake of rice decoction during diarrhea and believe that its overdose is simply impossible.

When rice decoction is used for diarrhea for children, it is recommended to give it in slightly smaller amounts - one to two tablespoons 5-6 times a day. The duration of the intake is regulated by the course of the intestinal disorder, but if diarrhea does not decrease for two days (reviews indicate that this is how long the diarrhea is treated with this remedy), then more drastic measures need to be taken. Recipes of rice decoction against diarrhea

Rice decoction from diarrhea is best prepared from rice with long grains, since it has a higher content of amylose.

All recipes of rice decoction from diarrhea are reduced to one method of its preparation, which is considered the most correct. First, you need to observe the proportion of rice and water: if half a cup of dry cereals should take three glasses of water, then the whole glass - twice as much. Or for 0.5 liters of water, two tablespoons of rice.

The groats should be thoroughly washed, put in a saucepan and, filled with cold water, bring to a boil on high heat. Then the fire is reduced to a minimum, and the cooking continues for 45 minutes (the pan is closed with a lid, the rice is periodically stirred). Do not wait until the broth cools, it should be filtered (into a glass container) through a fine colander or gauze.

Use during pregnancy

Rice broth can be used for diarrhea in pregnant women. More information see -  Diarrhea during pregnancy

Contraindications to the use of rice broth

Rice broth is not recommended for diarrhea:

  • if there is a history of colitis or Crohn's disease;
  • when in feces there is an admixture of blood (which can be with dysentery or salmonellosis);
  • if diarrhea is aggravated by intense nausea with repeated vomiting, severe pain syndrome in the abdominal area, a significant increase in body temperature, rapid deterioration of well-being and progressive weakness.

Rice decoction for diarrhea for babies up to six months is not used: you need to fight with dehydration and feed the baby with breast milk, which contains antibodies and antibacterial proteins - lactoferrin and lysozyme. Read more -  What should I do if my child has diarrhea?

Side effects

The rice can contain spores of Bacillus cereus - the bacteria that live in the soil. One of the intestinal toxins produced by these microorganisms is resistant to high temperatures (that is, it is not neutralized in the cooking process of rice) and causes a person to vomit and diarrhea.

Storage conditions and shelf life

The prepared portion of rice broth should be used during the day, as its shelf life is limited to one day, that is, every day it is necessary to prepare a fresh broth and store it better in a cool place (in the summer - in the refrigerator).
