Penester contains the active element finasteride, which is an artificial azasteroid compound. This component specifically slows down the activity of 5-α reductase of the 1st generation.
5-α reductase itself is an intracellular enzyme that helps convert testosterone into a slightly different form – 5-dihydrotestosterone. Increased amounts of the latter in the blood cause an increase in the prostate, resulting in the development of its hyperplasia. [ 1 ]
Indications Penester
It is used for pharmaceutical treatment in cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia. It is used to reduce the likelihood of acute urinary retention, as well as the need for surgery. The drug also helps to reduce the size of the prostate, increase the volume of urine excreted and facilitate the process of urination.
There is information about the successful use of the drug in the treatment of alopecia, but after stopping taking Penester, this disorder develops again.
Release form
The medicinal product is released in tablets with a volume of 5 mg, 10 pieces per blister pack. There are 3 such packs per box.
Pharmacodynamics
The use of the drug causes a significant decrease in the level of dihydrotestosterone inside the prostate cells, as well as in the blood. As a result, the progression of hyperplasia slows down with a further decrease in the size of the prostate. All this allows the process of urination to be normalized.
The use of the drug does not lead to changes in blood levels of prolactin, thyroxine with cortisol and TSH. It also does not affect lipid metabolism. [ 2 ]
Pharmacokinetics
After oral administration of the medication, finasteride is slowly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Penester reaches plasma Cmax values after 120 minutes. The intraplasmic synthesis rate with protein is 93%.
The processes of drug exchange are realized inside the liver, and excretion occurs with urine and feces. The half-life is 6 hours, but in elderly people (over 70 years old) it can be extended and reach 8 hours. [ 3 ]
Dosing and administration
The medicine is taken orally, swallowing the tablet without chewing, washing it down with plain water. Usually 5 mg of the substance is taken once a day, regardless of food intake.
The treatment process should be long-term. The development of the clinical effect is often noted only after 3-6 months of continuous drug intake.
Clinical symptoms of prostate hyperplasia disappear completely, usually after 1 year of treatment, although sometimes a longer course is required.
- Application for children
It is prohibited to prescribe Penester in pediatrics.
Use Penester during pregnancy
Women of reproductive age and pregnant women should not come into contact with finasteride (including crushed tablets), because it can cause genital development disorders in a male fetus. Given that small amounts of finasteride are excreted in sperm, women in this group should use contraception when having sex with men who are taking the drug.
Contraindications
Among the contraindications:
- strong personal sensitivity to medicinal elements;
- tumors of a malignant nature in the prostate area;
- obstruction affecting the urethra;
- use in women.
Caution is required when taking the medication by people with liver dysfunction.
Before starting to use the drug, it is necessary to exclude the presence of such pathologies in the patient as infectious prostatitis, prostate carcinoma, hypotension affecting the bladder, as well as other diseases with symptoms similar to those observed in benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Side effects Penester
When administering the drug, such disorders as decreased ejaculate volume, decreased libido and impotence may be observed.
Men may experience pain in the mammary glands and gynecomastia, but such symptoms disappear after discontinuing the drug.
Epidermal manifestations of allergy and pain in the testicular area may be observed.
Laboratory tests showed a decrease in prostate-specific antigen levels.
Storage conditions
Penester should be stored in a dark and dry place at temperatures not exceeding 25°C.
Shelf life
Penester is approved for use for a period of 24 months from the date of production of the therapeutic substance.
