Today, diabetes is diagnosed more and more often. However, it is not a death sentence. You can live with diabetes, living a fairly long and high-quality life. Many diabetics use herbs for diabetes. They are used both as medicines that alleviate the body's condition and as sugar substitutes, food additives. Herbs are useful, varied, and have virtually no side effects (if used correctly and rationally). Let's consider the advisability of using herbs for diabetes in more detail.

What herbs are good for diabetes?

The first, most common, and quite natural question is: "What herbs are useful for diabetes?" First of all, for diabetes, those herbs will be useful that help normalize metabolic processes in the body, that relieve and prevent inflammation, eliminate carbohydrate metabolism disorders, and reduce blood glucose levels. Also indicated are herbs that have a diuretic effect, eliminate edema, cleanse the body, eliminating metabolic by-products, intoxication products, and autoantibodies.

In diabetes, herbs such as galega, alchemilla, and stevia are often prescribed. Stevia has a wonderful sweet taste and a refined aroma, so it is used not only as a means of normalizing carbohydrate metabolism, but also as a sugar substitute. In addition, it has an antiviral, anti-infective effect, and normalizes immunity. Red grass, goat's rue, amaranth, and wormwood are widely used. Altai herbs have a positive effect on the body, being a rich source of vitamins and minerals, maintaining a high level of functional activity in the body, and normalizing metabolic processes. Herbs such as woodlice, thale cress, yarrow, and arphasetin are also used.

There are many different ways to use medicinal herbs for diabetes. So, herbs are used as part of monotherapy, or medicinal infusions are prepared from them. Many herbs are used in the form of herbal decoctions, infusions, balms. Some are used as tea or as food additives.

Herbal Treatment for Diabetes

Herbal treatment is indicated for diabetes, since herbs allow for long-term, cumulative treatment. Herbs gradually affect the body, exerting a gentle effect on it. They gently normalize metabolic processes, stabilize blood glucose levels, and help maintain chronic diseases in remission. Many medicinal herbs normalize immunity, increase endurance and resistance, and improve performance. At the same time, side effects from herbs occur much less frequently than with the use of many pharmaceuticals.

It is important to understand that in the pharmaceutical industry, herbs are usually understood to mean medicinal raw materials of plant origin, which are dried or fresh parts of herbaceous plants. As a rule, herbs are collected during flowering, less often - during budding and fruiting. Raw materials called herbs are stems with leaves and flowers. Sometimes there are also buds and unripe fruits on the stems.

Some plants collect only the tops, while others collect the entire above-ground part. There are also plants that are collected together with the root. Therefore, the collection technology is the subject of a whole science - pharmacognosy. If you decide to try herbal treatment for diabetes, it is better to buy ready-made herbs at the pharmacy. They are collected by specialists in compliance with all requirements and standards, and have the most beneficial properties. However, herbal treatment for diabetes can also be carried out with self-collected herbs. The main thing is to consult in advance, or study the basic principles of collecting each medicinal plant. It is also important to know the method of preparation and form of application. Some herbs are used in the form of tinctures, some - in the form of decoctions. Herbal teas for diabetes

In case of diabetes, not only individual herbs can be used, but also whole collections. Such collections can be purchased at the pharmacy in ready-made form, or purchased independently, having prepared the plants as medicinal raw materials. It is possible to combine different properties of plants. For example, herbs that reduce sugar levels go well with herbs that have an anti-inflammatory or anti-edematous effect. Collections are often prepared, combining herbs for reducing sugar with herbs with a diuretic effect.

Let's look at some of the herbal mixtures used for diabetes.

It is a powerful antioxidant, has anti-inflammatory, wound-healing. General tonic properties.

Cleansing Herbs for Diabetes

In diabetes, there is a need to take cleansing herbs, since the body's metabolism is disrupted, which often leads to the accumulation of toxins, slags, and metabolic by-products. Autoimmune aggression is also often observed, in which a high level of autoimmune antibodies accumulates, aimed at destroying the body's own structures. Cleansing herbs act as sorbents, bind and remove toxins, which leads to cleansing of the body.

The following herbs act as cleansing herbs: calamus, aloe vera, anise, birch mushroom, elecampane, centaury, oak bark, buckthorn bark, safflower grass, safflower leuzea, Chinese magnolia vine, stinging nettle, and common juniper.

Many of these herbs not only have a cleansing effect on the body, but also have a powerful immunostimulating, anti-inflammatory, antiviral effect, which ensures not only cleansing of the body, but also reliable protection against diseases.

Diuretic herbs for diabetes

Diuretic herbs are prescribed for diabetes, since high blood glucose levels lead to serious carbohydrate metabolism disorders, one of the manifestations of which is fluid retention in the body. All this leads to the development of persistent edema. Therefore, agents are needed that promote the processing of fluid and its excretion with urine. The main diuretic herbs for diabetes include Manchurian aralia, Japanese pagoda tree, water knotweed, snake knotweed, ginseng, and cornflower. These agents are recommended for use in the form of alcohol infusions (using 40% alcohol). You can also use water decoctions, for the preparation of which you need to pour boiling water over the plant material and keep it under a closed lid for about 20-30 minutes.

The list of diuretic herbs is not limited to the indicated means, but it is recommended to use these means, since, in addition to the diuretic effect, they also have an immunomodulatory effect, normalize carbohydrate metabolism. Partially reduces the level of sugar in the blood (with prolonged use). In case of severe edema in diabetes, the indicated herbs can be combined with each other in various proportions, which enhances their diuretic and anti-edematous effect.

Herbs that lower sugar in diabetes

Most often, herbs that reduce sugar are prescribed for diabetes. This is not surprising, since one of the most unfavorable symptoms of diabetes is high glucose (sugar) levels in the blood. The herbs that are considered below act as herbs aimed at reducing sugar.

Marsh wild rosemary. It is an evergreen shrub. Young shoots are used as raw material. It is better to choose those that have not yet covered with leaves, or are only slightly covered with a thin layer of bark. The shoots should be thin and annual, in no case should lignified old shoots be harvested. The plant is poisonous, so it should be used with caution, strictly according to the instructions. Side effects, or in case of overdose, may include nausea, vomiting, headache. It is used in the form of a decoction: about a pinch of grass per glass of hot water (boiling water). Infuse for at least an hour. Drink a tablespoon 2-3 times a day, or as prescribed by a doctor. [ 11 ]

It is recommended to use it in the form of an alcohol infusion. It is acceptable to use it in the form of a water decoction. It is often included in various medicinal collections. It helps to increase appetite, normalize metabolic processes, and reduce blood sugar. It has a hemostatic effect.

Common barberry is a perennial branched shrub. It has a powerful root system that penetrates deep into the soil. The roots and leaves act as raw materials. They can be harvested throughout the growing season. They are used in the form of a decoction, alcohol infusions, and medicinal collections. It is also available in a ready-made form as a preparation of berverin bisulfate, a collection according to Zdrenko's prescription. It normalizes carbohydrate metabolism and blood sugar levels, and also has a choleretic and hemostatic effect. [ 12 ]

Maclea cordifolia is a perennial herbaceous plant covered with a glaucous coating. Contains orange milky juice. Collected during the formation of buds or flowering. Used in dried form. The raw material is a mixture of pieces of stems, leaves, buds and flowers. Available in the form of decoctions, infusions, extracts. Contains a large number of alkaloids. The main alkaloids are sanguinarine and chelerythrine. Reduces sugar levels, and is also applied as an ointment to wounds that do not heal for a long time.

Smooth Stephanie is a perennial dioecious liana. The medicinal raw material is the tubers with roots. The raw material is harvested in the fall, cut into pieces, dried. In this case, it is necessary to take plants that have reached the age of 2-3 years. The composition includes alkaloids. Normalizes the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, reduces the level of glucose in the blood. [ 13 ]

Pharmacodynamics

Most herbs prescribed for diabetes are primarily aimed at reducing blood sugar levels. They not only reduce sugar levels, but also normalize carbohydrate metabolism in general. As a rule, most herbs participate in the normalization of other types of metabolic processes (directly or indirectly). Thus, normalization of carbohydrate metabolism, as a rule, entails the normalization of protein and fat metabolism. A characteristic feature of herbs for diabetes is the ability to normalize the immune status and hormonal background of a person. In addition, most herbs are a rich source of vitamins and minerals, saturation with which leads to the normalization of metabolism. Many herbs have absorption properties (absorb and remove toxins, metabolites, metabolic products). An important feature of pharmacodynamics is that herbs for diabetes have an anti-inflammatory and anti-edematous effect. Many of them have a diuretic effect.

Most herbs for diabetes have tonic properties, which allows you to maintain optimal tone and functioning of the body. They stimulate physical and mental performance, increase overall resistance and endurance of the body, which allows it to withstand the effects of many adverse factors of both endogenous and exogenous origin. It is also worth noting that almost all herbs have a general strengthening effect, have a positive effect on the restoration of the normal functional state of the body, are effective in recovery after operations, after serious diseases.

Pharmacokinetics

Herbs for diabetes have a positive effect on the diabetic organism, primarily due to the fact that they contain a large amount of lignan and phenolic glycosides, as well as pectin substances, resins, gums, anthocyanin compounds, essential oils. Pharmacokinetics is a series of transformations that begin from the moment the substance enters the organism. It should be taken into account that many herbs for diabetes are a rich source of iron, vitamin C, which allows you to quickly normalize vitamin and carbohydrate metabolism in the organism. Herbs contain approximately 14% moisture, and about 40% extractive substances, which are extracted using ethyl alcohol of 40% concentration. The remaining 46% are various mineral, organic and inorganic substances. That is why most herbs for diabetes are prescribed in the form of alcohol infusions or extracts.

Dosing and administration

In this case, it is impossible to describe the method of application and dosage for herbs for diabetes, since various herbs and even their mixtures are used for diabetes. The treatment regimen, dosage, concentration, duration - all this depends, first of all, on the type of herb used. Some herbs are used in the form of alcohol infusions, others - in the form of decoctions, others - added to tea or food. There are herbs that can be drunk simply as tea, in almost unlimited quantities. There are herbs that are drunk strictly according to the prescribed scheme, at the time of administration. Therefore, before starting herbal treatment for diabetes, you must consult a doctor or a homeopathic specialist. It is better to consult with the attending physician, since he initially knows the entire history of the disease, and when choosing treatment tactics, proceeds from the individual patient's anamnesis.

  • Application for children

Before prescribing herbs for diabetes to children, you need to consult a doctor. The use of herbs for children with diabetes has certain specifics, requires special knowledge and skills. The use of herbs for children is more justified than the use of pharmaceuticals, but this is not always justified. It is necessary to take into account the child's age, his individual characteristics, medical history, concomitant pathologies, the presence of chronic diseases. The treatment regimen, duration, dosage of the herbal remedy, and even the method of preparing the herb can only be determined by a doctor. Self-medication should never be done, since this can have serious adverse effects on the child's health. Not all herbs can be given to children, so you need to consult a doctor about the advisability of choosing a particular herb.

Use herbs for diabetes during pregnancy

There is still no consensus on the advisability of using herbs for diabetes during pregnancy. Some researchers are inclined to believe that it is better not to use any medications during pregnancy, including herbs, herbal remedies, homeopathy. Other researchers and practicing doctors come to the conclusion that elevated glucose levels require reduction, regardless of whether a woman is pregnant or not. This is due to the fact that high blood sugar levels negatively affect the health of both the mother and the fetus. In addition, high glucose levels can become a life-threatening condition.

In any case, if you choose between pharmaceuticals and herbs for diabetes, it is better to opt for herbs, since they are safer, have significantly fewer side effects and contraindications, and can be used for a long time. However, in any case, before you start taking herbs for diabetes, you need to consult a doctor. Only a doctor can correctly select the necessary herb, prescribe the optimal treatment regimen, and dosage regimen. The doctor also takes into account contraindications. Not all herbs are allowed to be used during pregnancy.

Contraindications

The main contraindications to the use of herbs for diabetes may be an acute severe condition, exacerbation of diabetes, a sharp increase in blood sugar levels. In this case, you need to act quickly, provide the patient with emergency care aimed at reducing blood glucose levels. Herbs are usually designed for long-term use. They gradually reduce glucose levels, allow you to control it and maintain it at a stable level. As a rule, herbs have a cumulative effect, that is, first, a certain level of active substances must accumulate in the body, and only after that it has an effect, which is not always rational in the treatment of acute emergency conditions.

There are also some contraindications based on concomitant diseases. For example, it is necessary to take into account that St. John's wort is contraindicated for women. It sharply increases blood pressure. In addition, it contains a high level of male hormones, which can cause hormonal imbalance in the body. On the contrary, peppermint is contraindicated for men, since it sharply reduces blood pressure, and also contains a large amount of female hormones, which also causes hormonal imbalance in men.

During pregnancy, burnet, nettle, wormwood, and a number of other herbs are contraindicated, as they have an abortive effect and can cause bleeding. It should also be taken into account that many herbs can be given to children starting from 5-6 years of age, so the use of individual herbs may be limited due to age. Sage, chamomile, plantain are contraindicated for people with gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, and other gastrointestinal diseases.

Side effects herbs for diabetes

As a rule, herbs for diabetes do not cause side effects. Some of them may be individually intolerable to the body, which causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, digestive disorders, bloating and flatulence. Signs of intoxication may develop. In some cases, headache, dizziness, migraine occur, which may also be a sign of individual intolerance to the herb.

It is also necessary to take into account that many herbs cause allergic reactions in people. These can be reactions of both delayed and immediate type. The most dangerous are considered to be allergic reactions of immediate type (HRH NT), for example, anaphylactic shock. In such a situation, blood pressure drops sharply, a person loses consciousness, the pulse, blood flow, heart function slow down, up to a comatose state. The patient requires immediate help. This is often observed in people with increased sensitization of the body, with bronchial asthma, with a tendency to suffocation, allergies in the anamnesis. As a rule, such people know about the tendency to such reactions, so before using it, you need to check the tolerance of the herb by conducting an express test. To do this, a small amount of the product is applied to the back of the wrist. Then it should be applied.

Overdose

Cases of overdose of medicinal herbs are rare. This is due to the fact that most of them are almost completely processed by the body, and if the dose is exceeded, they are simply excreted with urine unchanged. At the same time, the frequency of urination increases. For a person with a normal genitourinary system, this does not cause any inconvenience. However, if a person has a history of kidney or urinary system pathology, this can lead to an increase in the load on the kidneys, due to which inflammation of the kidneys and urinary tract develops, for example, cystitis, pyelitis, pyelonephritis, glomerulonephritis.

It is also necessary to take into account that there are certain types of plants that are considered poisonous. Overdosing on such drugs can lead to severe poisoning, even death. In some cases, overdosing can cause signs of mild intoxication: increased body temperature, dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, and digestive disorders.

Storage conditions

As a rule, herbs are stored in dry places, protected from moisture and direct sunlight. It is better to store herbs in dry paper bags, in a dark place. Herbs should be securely hidden from children and animals, since they are often attracted by the aroma of herbs, those substances that are part of the composition. When buying ready-made herbs in a pharmacy, you need to carefully read the storage conditions on the package, strictly follow the recommendations. It is better to store such herbs in factory packaging.

Shelf life

Different herbs may have different shelf lives. Most of them have unlimited shelf lives (if stored in collected dry form, and provided that all storage rules are followed). Herbal decoctions are stored for no more than 2-3 days. Therefore, you cannot boil the entire package of herbs at once. You need to prepare fresh decoctions each time, as needed. As for infusions, packaged infusions are usually stored for up to 2 years. After opening the package, the shelf life, as a rule, does not exceed 3 months. Extracts, essential oils are stored much less - about 1 year. When buying herbs in a pharmacy, the expiration dates are usually indicated on the packaging.

Reviews

If you analyze the reviews, you can see that among all the reviews about herbs for diabetes, positive reviews prevail. People like the fact that herbs can be drunk for a long period of time, that they are well absorbed and tolerated by the body, and practically do not cause side effects. It is also quite difficult to cause an overdose of herbs. Also, many patients taking herbs for diabetes note that they are quite easy to prepare, they do not require special storage conditions. Herbs are quite effective. With long-term use, they help maintain a stable blood sugar level, and help prevent hyperglycemic attacks.

Negative reviews are extremely rare. Of the negative reviews we found, almost all of them were related to the fact that the person took the herb incorrectly. As a result, it turned out to be ineffective. This once again confirms the importance and significance of choosing the right herb, as well as calculating the right treatment regimen and tactics.

What herbs should not be used for diabetes?

A completely natural question that we often hear from patients: "What herbs are prohibited for diabetes?" Let's figure it out. So, for diabetes, all herbs that contribute to an increase in the level of sugar, glucose in the blood are strictly contraindicated. It is not recommended to take herbs that contribute to fluid retention in the body, herbs that can cause edema, allergic reactions.
