Polemonium caeruleum (blueweed, swear-grass) is a once popular plant, the properties of which were actively studied in the Soviet Union. Even then, excellent expectorant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and sedative properties of polemonium were noted, which made its use in the treatment of bronchitis and cough popular. In Ukraine, the plant is grown specifically for use in pharmacology.

Pharmacodynamics

The expectorant effect of the herb is based on the saponins it contains, which irritate the bronchial mucosa, stimulating it to remove excess mucus. Polemonium helps to thin phlegm, turn unproductive cough into productive cough, and alleviate coughing fits.

Dosing and administration

For bronchitis, it is customary to use mainly the root and rhizomes of the herb as medicinal raw materials, although the above-ground parts of the plant also have beneficial properties and are used in folk medicine.

To treat cough, it is recommended to take a decoction of the roots of the bluehead, which is prepared from 1-2 tablespoons of dry raw material and 1 glass of water. The decoction should be boiled covered in a water bath for half an hour. Strain after cooling and add boiled water to the original volume.

The decoction can also be prepared over an open fire. The mixture should be boiled for at least 15-20 minutes, after which it should be infused with the lid closed for about 10 minutes.

The infusion is prepared by taking the ingredients in the same proportions. But the water is not cold, but boiling. The composition is infused for half an hour, covered with a lid.

You need to take a decoction or infusion 4-5 times a day. It is better to do this after meals. A single dose is 1 tbsp. Acute bronchitis is treated for 3-7 days, chronic bronchitis - about a month.

Contraindications

Blue polemonium is a low-toxic plant, so it has very few contraindications. An absolute contraindication is hypersensitivity to the herb. Hypertensive patients, as well as those with high blood clotting rates and a tendency to form blood clots, should also be careful. Such patients can use blue polemonium only after consultation with a doctor and in the dosage prescribed by him.

The same applies to pregnant women. The plant has not been found to have any negative effects on the mother's and fetus's body, but there have also been no sufficient studies in this area. During breastfeeding, the use of the herb is also not prohibited, but it is not advisable.

The stems of the plant are cut off, and large roots are cut into pieces. They can be dried in the sun or in a dryer with a temperature of no more than 60 degrees.
