This drug is of plant origin - the active substance of all its forms is an extract of the medicinal herb thyme or thyme, which is popularly called the Mother of God herb. Its medicinal properties are highly appreciated by both folk and evidence-based medicine. Many pharmaceutical companies produce medicinal products based on this herb. One of them is Bronchicum for cough. A drug with this name is produced at pharmaceutical factories of the international corporation Sanofi with French roots. Plants are located in different countries: Germany, Poland, Russia and some others, so the country of origin may be indicated differently.

The name itself tells the consumer what effect is supposed to be obtained from the use of the drug, that is, Bronchicum from what cough?

The drug in any form helps to liquefy viscous bronchial secretions, dilutes it and facilitates expectoration. That is, it converts a dry cough into a productive one. In addition, thyme has a pronounced antimicrobial and wound healing effect, which helps to sanitize the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract and restore its integrity, damaged by pathogenic microorganisms, and also relaxes the smooth muscles of the bronchi, which also contributes to the speedy elimination of sputum and cessation of cough. [1]

Indications Bronchicum for cough

Cough in acute respiratory infections of any genesis and localization, elimination of sputum.

Release form

The active ingredient in different forms of the drug is the same, therefore, the effect is also expected to be similar. What form should you prefer? First, it's a matter of taste and preference. Someone likes to suck the lozenge, while others prefer to swallow a spoonful of syrup quickly. In addition, when choosing the form of the drug, you need to pay attention to additional components. They are somewhat different and can cause an allergic reaction in someone, so individual tolerance must be taken into account when choosing the form of the drug.

Bronchicum C syrup is packaged in bottles. It is reddish-brown in color with a slight sheen, has a transparent consistency and an unobtrusive honey aroma. For 100 ml of syrup, 15 g of active ingredient is added. The estragents are: 10% ammonia solution (one part); glycerin 85% (20 parts); ethanol 90% (70 parts); purified water (109 parts).

In addition, the syrup contains the following auxiliary substances that improve the taste and preserve the pharmacodynamic properties of the active ingredient, as well as contribute to its faster entry into the systemic circulation: preservative E211 - sodium salt of benzoic acid; flavors and flavor enhancers: rose oil, honey and cherry (concentrated cherry juice); liquid sweeteners: invert sugar (glucose and fructose in syrup form, 50:50), glucose solution, sugar syrup 67% (sucrose), antioxidant E330 (citric acid monohydrate), distilled water.

Bronchicum C lozenges have the same active ingredients and extractants in the same proportions. They differ in the composition of auxiliary components: preservative sweetener: sucrose; complexing agent polyvinylpyrrolidone; L-menthol; cineole (eucalyptol); gum arabic E414, stearic acid, enterosorbent (colloidal silicon dioxide), stabilizer (magnesium stearic acid E572).

Bronchicum cough elixir also has a liquid form and a two-component complex of active ingredients. In addition to the thyme extract, the composition contains an extract of primrose herb. The composition of the extractants is the same, but the total concentration of ethanol is slightly less. There are also fewer auxiliary ingredients - preservative E211 - sodium salt of benzoic acid; sweetener - syrup of glucose, sucrose, fructose and distilled water.

When Bronchicum cough tablets are mentioned, they mean lozenges - the only solid form of the drug.

Pharmacodynamics

The pharmacological properties of all forms of Bronchicum are determined by the action of the substances that make up the drug.

Thyme extract is able to suppress pathogenic microflora, and not only bacterial. It has antiparasitic and fungicidal activity, in addition, it is a mild anesthetic. Contains volatile substances - essential oils. All this, coupled with the ability to thin the secret, which is abundantly secreted in the respiratory tract during inflammation, makes it valuable for ARVI, tracheitis, bronchitis, accompanied by cough. Its secretolytic properties and the ability to relieve spasms of smooth muscles make it possible to activate the process of coughing up and cleansing the airways of viscous mucus. Thyme extract causes a direct expectorant effect by acting on the epithelial surface of the bronchi, enhancing the activity of cilia. It also irritates the vagus nerve, which acts on the gastric mucosa and enhances pulmonary mucus excretion. [2]

The elixir also contains primrose extract, which maintains a local irritating effect on the epithelium of the stomach and stimulates reflex coughing. [3]

The auxiliary ingredients improve the taste of the preparations (drown out the bitterness of thyme) and retain the properties of the active ingredients in liquid and solid form, increasing, moreover, the conductive effect. [4]

Doctors assess the effectiveness of these drugs in about the same way. However, there are also inexpensive domestic Pertussin (the same extract of thyme) or syrup from licorice root that have long been familiar to us from childhood .

Various synthetic expectorant drugs can also be prescribed.

Reviews of all secretolytic drugs are about the same. Most of them note that their cough is gone. About one fifth of consumers note that they did not notice the effect of the application. Many doctors and patients believe that taking expectorants is not necessary, it is quite possible to do with humidification and frequent drinking. The cough will go away at about the same rate as when taking expectorants.
