The drug Gaviscon is available in the form of chewable tablets with the smell of lemon. Each tablet contains 250 mg of sodium salt of alginic acid (sodium alginate, E401); 133.5 mg of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda); 80 mg of calcium carbonate of carbonic acid (calcium carbonate), as well as auxiliary substances, including sweeteners - potassium acesulfame (E950) and aspartame (E951) - and lemon flavor.
Pharmacodynamics
The symptomatic effect of the antacid agent Gaviscon in tablets is based on neutralizing the hydrochloric acid of gastric juice. After ingestion, the salts included in the preparation enter into interaction with the acid. And under the action of the thickener and the stabilizer of sodium alginate, which forms colloidal solutions in the water, a jelly-like substance forms in the stomach. It envelops the contents of the stomach and in gastroesophageal reflux prevents the irritation of the mucous membrane, which causes heartburn.
This protective effect after a single dose at the recommended dose lasts more than three hours. In this case, the acidic medium is preserved in the stomach, which does not disturb the physiological process of digestion of food.
