Iodovital is an iodine preparation used to treat thyroid dysfunction.

Iodovital shows good efficiency in iodine deficiency conditions. The drug is prescribed to both adults and children from the first days of life and helps to normalize the thyroid function and hormone levels.

Indications Iodovital

Iodovital is used for iodine deficiency conditions (endemic goiter, etc.) in children from the first days of life and adults. The drug is also prescribed to prevent the recurrence of goiter after surgical interventions.

Release form

Iodovital is available in the form of film-coated tablets.

Pharmacodynamics

Iodovital contains inorganic iodine, which inhibits the production and synthesis of thyroid hormone, which helps to reduce the size of the thyroid gland and normalize hormone levels.

Pharmacokinetics

Iodovital is absorbed in the small intestine. After taking the tablets, the active substance is distributed throughout the body within two hours, the maximum concentration is observed in the thyroid gland, and a slight accumulation is also noted in the mammary and salivary glands. Iodovital penetrates the placental barrier well.

Excretion from the body occurs mainly with urine, a small amount is excreted with saliva and sweat.

Dosing and administration

Iodovital is taken (unless the doctor has prescribed a different dosage) depending on age: adult patients and children starting from 12 years of age - 100-200 mcg per day, children from the first days of life - 50-100 mcg, pregnant women and nursing mothers - 150-200 mcg.

The tablets should be taken after meals; for children, the tablet can be dissolved in a drink.

Iodovital is prescribed to pregnant women if necessary.

Contraindications

Iodovital is contraindicated in cases of herpetiform dermatitis, nodular goiter, benign thyroid tumors, kidney stones, and iodine intolerance.

Side effects Iodovital

Iodovital can provoke allergic reactions, increased heart rate, tremors, severe agitation, sleep disturbances, sweating, and bowel disorders.

Overdose

If taken in high doses, Iodovital causes darkening of the oral mucosa and the development of certain diseases (runny nose, bronchitis, swelling of the vocal cords, bleeding from the urinary system, etc.). An overdose of the drug can cause death.

Interactions with other drugs

Iodovital is an antithyroid drug, so other antithyroid drugs may enhance the therapeutic effect.

Trirheotropic hormone promotes the accumulation of iodine in the thyroid gland, potassium thiocyanate and perchlorate reduce the level of iodine in the organ.

Potassium-containing diuretics, together with high doses of Iodovital, increase the level of potassium in the body and provoke heart rhythm disturbances.

ACE inhibitors increase the level of potassium in the body, drugs containing lithium provoke the development of goiter and a decrease in the level of thyroid hormones.
