Suppositories against gardnerella and ureaplasma help to normalize the vaginal microflora and cure certain types of bacteria.
Indications for use
These drugs are used to treat two separate female conditions:
- Bacterial vaginosis, also known as gardnerellosis.
- Ureaplasmosis.
Ureaplasmosis is caused by the ureaplasma bacterium. Thanks to the use of suppositories, this disease can be effectively treated on an outpatient basis without the need for hospitalization. Such remedies are based on various antibiotics.
Before using suppositories, be sure to consult your doctor.
Firstly, such drugs are not suitable for everyone.
Secondly, they may be needed only in advanced cases of ureaplasma.
Thirdly, the specialist will recommend complex therapy that will help completely get rid of ureaplasmosis.
Gardnerellosis is a vaginal dysbacteriosis. This disease is considered quite common, but not serious. In this case, the number of lactobacilli needed by the female body decreases, and pathogenic microbes (gardnerella) begin to multiply instead.
Various suppositories are effective in treating gardnerellosis and can only be prescribed by a professional.
Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics
Let's consider pharmacodynamics using the example of the popular suppositories against gardnerella and ureaplasma "Terzhinan".
This is a combination drug that is actively used in modern gynecology. It has antimicrobial, antiprotozoal and anti-inflammatory effects. Thanks to this product, you can achieve the integrity of the vaginal mucosa and the constancy of its pH.
The drug contains three main active ingredients: ternidazole, neomycin and nystanin. It also contains prednisolone. Ternidazole has a fungicidal effect on fungi, reducing the synthesis of ergosterol in membranes, and exhibits high activity against gardnerella.
Neomycin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. It fights against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms. Nystatin is considered a popular antifungal drug that acts mainly on Candida fungi.
Pharmacokinetic studies of the popular drug against gardnerella and ureaplasma "Terzhinan" have not been conducted, since it has a rather low level of systemic absorption.
Names of gardnerella candles
First of all, it is necessary to pay attention that the treatment of gardnerella takes place in two stages. Moreover, the second stage without the first will not be effective at all.
First, the doctor prescribes suppositories with antiseptic and antibacterial action, which eliminate the pathogen. Then the vagina is "populated" with normal microflora using suppositories with live lactobacilli.
The most common gardnerella candles are:
- Macmiror. The active ingredient of the drug is nifuratel (a derivative of nitrofuran).
It has antiprotozoal, antimicrobial, antifungal effects. For bacterial vaginosis, one suppository is used three times a day. Therapy lasts a week. The main contraindications to the use of the drug are: pregnancy, intolerance to the components. Side effects are rare: allergy, nausea, headache.
- Terzhinan. The active ingredients of the drug are neomycin sulfate, nystanin and ternidazole. Due to this, the suppositories have an antifungal effect. It is nystanin that fights gardnerella.
For the treatment of gardnerellosis, Terzhinan is administered once a day (preferably in the evening, since after the administration of the drug the woman needs to lie down). The therapy lasts ten days. The drug is contraindicated during pregnancy and in case of intolerance to its main components. Side effects are: itching, burning in the vagina, allergies.
- Metrovit. The active ingredient of the drug is metronidazole, which effectively fights gardnerella.
It is used once a day (preferably at night) in a dosage of 500 ml of the drug (1 suppository). The duration of therapy is determined by the doctor. It cannot be taken in case of: blood diseases, organic lesions of the central nervous system, pregnancy, liver dysfunction. The main side effects include the following: vomiting, appetite disorders, unpleasant taste, headaches, poor sleep, allergies, leukopenia, burning in the urethra, irritability.
For the second stage of therapy, the following are usually used:
- Laktonorm. Vaginal capsules based on live lactobacilli, which help to completely restore the vaginal microflora after gardnerellosis. One suppository is used twice a day. The course of therapy lasts from seven to fourteen days.
- Atsilakt. Vaginal suppositories based on the live mass of acidophilic lactobacilli. To improve the vaginal microflora, the drug is used for five to ten days. One suppository is inserted per day.
Dalacin
The active ingredient of the drug is clindamycin. It is a semi-synthetic antibiotic-lincosamide. It exhibits an active effect against some gram-negative bacteria (including gardnerella).
The dosage is prescribed by the doctor. To avoid complications, it is necessary to strictly adhere to his recommendations. Usually, adults administer one suppository three to four times a day. The duration of therapy is two weeks.
The main side effects from using Dalacin are: nausea, which is often accompanied by abdominal pain and vomiting, jaundice, stomach ulcers, allergic reactions (rash, itching, redness, urticaria), leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, vaginitis.
The drug is contraindicated for use in cases of: gastrointestinal diseases, myasthenia, chronic liver diseases, pregnancy, lactation, intolerance to components.
How to use gardnerella suppositories
The dosage of the drug depends on the disease and the individual characteristics of each patient. Usually one suppository is administered per day. As a rule, this is done in the evening, before the woman goes to bed, since after the administration of the drug, it is necessary to lie down for at least 15 minutes.
The course of therapy depends on the specific product you use. In some cases it lasts only a week, sometimes it takes ten to fourteen days.
Using Gardnerella Suppositories During Pregnancy
Gardnerellosis during pregnancy is currently found in 20% of cases. This disease is quite serious for the expectant mother, as it can cause intrauterine infection of the child. This leads (in some cases) to premature termination of pregnancy and discharge of amniotic fluid.
To get rid of gardnerella in pregnant women, the following medications in the form of suppositories are usually used: Metrogyl, Trichopolum, Klion, Metronidazole or Ornidazole. The main difference between these medications is the fact that they do not affect the development of the fetus in any way. But remember, any medications (even those that are allowed during pregnancy) can only be used after the end of the first trimester of the gestation period. Usually, doctors begin to treat gardnerellosis in pregnant women starting from the twentieth week.
Contraindications for use and side effects
As a rule, suppositories for gardnerella and ureaplasma do not have any serious contraindications. They cannot be used in case of intolerance to the main active components of suppositories, allergic reactions to the active substances of the drugs, in the first months of pregnancy, and during breastfeeding.
Side effects from using such suppositories are extremely rare. In some cases, at the first stages of therapy, a woman may feel a slight burning or itching in the vagina. Sometimes there are allergic reactions, nausea, vomiting, headache, irritation, depression, loss of sleep or appetite. In such cases, it is necessary to immediately stop therapy and seek help from your doctor.
Overdose
Since such drugs are administered one suppository at a time, there have been no cases of overdose.
Interaction with other drugs
The interaction of suppositories against gardnerella and ureaplasma with other drugs depends entirely on the active ingredients that are their basis. For example, Terzhinan suppositories interact with various drugs without any weakening or strengthening of mutual effects. But Dalacin is not recommended to be taken together with muscle relaxants, as it can enhance their effect. If you use Metrovit together with any drugs based on lansoprazole, the patient may develop stomatitis, glossitis.
Storage conditions and shelf life
Usually, suppositories against gardnerella and ureaplasma are stored in a dry, cool place (air temperature not higher than +25 degrees). It is very important to keep them away from children. For more information, you can read the instructions, which are always included in the packaging of medical products.
Candles are stored for no more than three years under proper storage conditions. Please note that you cannot use any medications after this period, as this may lead to complications and increased side effects.
