Treating small children with medications is sometimes quite difficult. Some children, due to their age, do not yet know how to swallow pills, and an older child may simply not want to take the mixture. For this reason, many drugs intended for use in pediatrics are produced in a specific convenient form - in the form of suppositories. For example, in case of frequent viral infections and sore throats, suppositories for colds are used effectively and comfortably, which can be used to treat even the smallest children.

Indications cold suppositories

Small children are prone to colds, as their immune defense is in the formation stage for a long time. In particular, the weakness of the immune system manifests itself during the off-season: from October to December or from February to April. Is it worth talking about the period of epidemics, when the child's body is massively attacked by viruses and pathogenic microorganisms.

During one year, a child can get sick several times, especially if he often visits public places or goes to kindergarten. To combat colds, a pediatrician usually prescribes complex remedies in the form of syrups and drops. However, suppositories for colds can be irreplaceable in some cases:

  • for the treatment of a child under 1 year of age;
  • in case of repeated vomiting, when the medication taken orally does not have time to be absorbed;
  • if you are allergic to tablets or suspensions.

Of course, cold suppositories may also have their contraindications. Therefore, before starting treatment, you should carefully read the instructions for the selected medicine.

Release form

Since most colds in childhood are caused by viruses, pediatricians very rarely prescribe antibacterial therapy. Moreover, taking antibiotics in childhood is highly undesirable. When possible, symptomatic treatment is carried out, including the prescription of anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, immunomodulatory and even homeopathic drugs.

  • Antipyretic suppositories gently relieve symptoms of intoxication, headaches, and nausea associated with increased temperature.

Cold suppositories for children are used taking into account the following recommendations:

  • Antipyretic suppositories are used only if the body temperature exceeds 38.5°C;
  • the suppository can be reintroduced no earlier than after 4-5 hours;
  • Before using the suppository, you should carefully read the instructions so as not to exceed the maximum single and daily dosage;
  • If after the insertion of the suppository the expected decrease in body temperature does not occur, or the temperature, on the contrary, increases, it is necessary to call an ambulance for the child.

In rare cases, when the baby develops convulsions or other neurological symptoms along with the temperature increase, then antipyretic suppositories can be used already at 37.5°C. In this case, calling a pediatrician to the house should be mandatory.

  • Antiviral suppositories can only be used after being prescribed by a doctor, since in some cases such drugs can have an undesirable effect on the developing child’s body.

Cold suppositories can be effective both for treating the disease and for preventing it. Such drugs, as a rule, act for a long time, since the absorption of active substances from the mucous membrane occurs gradually.

Dosing and administration

It is advisable to insert the product into the rectum after defecation. To facilitate the procedure, the baby's anus can be lubricated with Vaseline oil or baby cream. The suppository should be inserted as carefully as possible so that the child does not feel any pain or discomfort. The smallest children do not need to insert the entire suppository: it is enough to cut the suppository into 2 or 4 parts.
