Retabolil contains the component nandrolone, which is an anabolic steroid with a prolonged type of activity. The androgenic effect of the element is weak; nandrolone itself is a derivative of testosterone, whose anabolic effect is more intense.
The drug successfully combines androgenic and anabolic indices, which allows it to be used in bodybuilding to gain muscle mass. The drug does not cause epidermal rashes or spermatogenesis disorders, and does not have pronounced hepatotoxicity. [ 1 ]
Indications Retabolyl
It is used for the following disorders:
- muscular dystrophy of a progressive nature;
- osteoporosis of various origins;
- restoration of normal protein metabolism after injuries or burns, as well as operations, radiation therapy and severe infections;
- glomerulonephritis;
- cachexia;
- therapy for disseminated breast carcinoma in women;
- spinal muscular atrophy;
- increase muscle mass (for bodybuilders);
- retinopathy of diabetic origin.
The drug can be combined with GCS, cytostatics, and tuberculostatics.
Release form
The medicinal element is released in the form of a liquid for intramuscular injections, inside ampoules with a volume of 1 ml. There is 1 such ampoule inside the box.
Pharmacodynamics
The drug promotes stimulation of erythropoiesis; it increases the number of red blood cells, hematocrit with hemoglobin, as well as the intensity and speed of protein binding.
It should be noted that the drug does not contain components of the C17-alpha-alkyl category, which can provoke liver dysfunction and cause cholestasis. [ 2 ]
Pharmacokinetics
The drug is released smoothly from the injection site and then penetrates into the bloodstream. The half-life is 6 days. The metabolic processes of the drug are realized in the liver. The main metabolic components are 19-norandrosterone, as well as 19-norepiandrosterone with 19-noretiocholonolone; they are excreted in the urine. The medicinal effect develops by the 3rd day after the introduction of the first portion.
Dosing and administration
The medication is used both in inpatient settings and for outpatients. Retabolil should be administered intramuscularly, deeply.
The dosage is selected by the attending physician, taking into account the characteristics of the disease. An adult is usually administered 25-50 mg of the substance once a month.
For a child, the dose is calculated in the ratio of 400 mcg/kg, and the frequency of administration corresponds to an adult. The drug can be prescribed by a doctor in pediatrics if there is a vital need.
Administration of medication to individuals with anemia.
The dosage for a man is 0.2 g administered once a week, and for a woman - 0.1 g with the same frequency. If there is no improvement after 6 months of therapy, the drug must be discontinued.
In case of severe renal failure, the medication is administered at a dosage of 50 mg, weekly.
People with oncology require 50 mg, 1 time per 5 days.

Contraindicated for use in pediatrics (individuals under 18 years of age).
Use Retabolyl during pregnancy
Retabolil cannot be used during breastfeeding and pregnancy.
Contraindications
Main contraindications:
- breast cancer in men or prostate cancer;
- development of nephrotic syndrome due to long-term use of anabolic steroids;
- the presence of metastases in individuals with oncology;
- presence of allergy to elements of the medication;
- porphyria;
- liver pathologies of a severe nature.
Caution when using the drug is necessary in cases of epilepsy, cardiac dysfunction, migraine, kidney/liver disease and glaucoma, as well as diabetics and with elevated blood pressure.
Side effects Retabolyl
When using the medication in accordance with all instructions and recommendations, in the established therapeutic doses, side effects develop only occasionally. Long-term administration of the drug can provoke the following disorders:
- symptoms of intolerance;
- vomiting, burning sensation in the tongue, nausea;
- dysfunctions associated with the ovaries (hyper- or hypofunction);
- epidermal rash and acne;
- liver pathologies and jaundice;
- retention of Na, fluid and nitrogen, as well as swelling;
- decreased gonadotropin secretion rates.
In case of poor physical activity, as well as in women with breast carcinoma, hypercalcemia may occur.
In addition, women may experience a decrease in vocal timbre, an increase in the size of the clitoris, menstrual cycle irregularities, the development of hirsutism, and hair loss.
In men, oligospermia, inflammation of the mammary glands, and also an increase in penis size and frequency of erections are sometimes observed.
Overdose
With abuse of Retabolil, its uncontrolled and prolonged use, the appearance of disorders affecting the endocrine system and the nervous system may be observed.
Interactions with other drugs
Steroids can potentiate the activity of coumarin derivatives and anticoagulants.
It is necessary to combine the drug with hypoglycemic agents very carefully. It is recommended to reduce the insulin dose.
Blood levels and glucose tolerance levels should be monitored regularly.
Storage conditions
Retabolil should be stored in a place out of reach of children and sunlight, at a temperature of no more than 25°C.
If sediment appears at the bottom of the medicinal ampoule (provided that the expiration date of the medicine has not expired by this time), it is necessary to heat it to dissolve it. Only transparent liquid can be used for intramuscular injections.
Shelf life
Retabolil can be used within a 5-year period from the date of production of the therapeutic element.
Analogues
The analogs of the drug are Fortabolin, Superbolan with Anabosan-Depot, and also Gormoretard with Nandrolone decanoate, Decanandroline with Turinabol-Depot and Abolon. Also on the list are Eubolin with Deca-Durabolin, Nortestosteronedecanoate and Decanabol.
Reviews
Retabolil receives mostly positive reviews from patients. When used in accordance with the selected dosages, the development of negative symptoms is not noted. Also among the precautions is the refusal of prolonged administration of the drug (over 6 months).
