Pharmazoline helps to narrow the blood vessels in the nose - it reduces swelling of the nasal mucosa, as well as the paranasal sinuses, as a result of which breathing through the nose improves when it is blocked.

Indications Pharmazoline

Farmazolin is used as a medicine for symptomatic therapy in patients suffering from acute allergic rhinitis, laryngitis, hay fever, and sinusitis accompanied by problems with breathing through the nose. The medicine is also used in case of swelling of the nasopharyngeal mucosa, inflammation of the middle ear, and in addition as a preventive measure against swelling during surgical or diagnostic procedures in the nasal cavity. The drug is used to eliminate acute manifestations of swelling or hyperemia of the nasopharyngeal and nasal mucosa of various origins.

Release form

It is produced in the form of nasal drops. The package contains a polyethylene bottle (may be with seal control) with a volume of 10 ml.

Pharmacodynamics

Pharmazoline is a non-selective alpha-adrenergic agonist that promotes local vasoconstriction in the mucous membrane and reduces the severity of inflammatory processes. Application of the drug to the mucous membrane has an anti-edematous effect and reduces fluid secretion and hyperemia, which reduces blood circulation in the venous sinuses and makes nasal breathing easier.

Pharmacokinetics

The medicine mainly has a local effect, being absorbed through the mucous membranes. The effect of active substances begins after 5-10 minutes. In general, the duration of action of Farmazolin is approximately 5-6 hours.

Dosing and administration

For children aged 12 years and over, as well as adults, the dosage is 1-3 drops of a 0.05% or 0.1% solution in both nostrils 1-3 times a day. For children aged 6-12 years: 2-3 drops, for children aged 6 months/5 years: 1-2 drops of 0.05% medicine 1-3 times a day. The treatment course of drugs of both concentrations (0.05% or 0.1%) lasts 3-5 days. For infants under six months, 1 drop of a 0.05% solution can be dripped into both nostrils at intervals of 6-8 hours, but only under constant supervision of a doctor.

Use Pharmazoline during pregnancy

Since the drug has vasoconstrictive properties, it should not be used during pregnancy.

Contraindications

Contraindications for use include: closed-angle glaucoma, high blood pressure, atrophic rhinitis, thyrotoxicosis, increased heart rate, hypersensitivity to drug components, and severe atherosclerosis.

Side effects Pharmazoline

Side effects may occur: dryness, burning sensation, and tingling in the nasal cavity. Long-term or frequent use of Farmazolin in high concentrations may lead to swelling of the nasal mucosa (mainly due to long-term use) and the occurrence of a resorptive effect (vomiting, headaches, a sharp increase in blood pressure, disturbance of the normal heart rhythm, dizziness, loss of sleep, transient visual impairment). Very long-term use of the drug in high dosages can cause depression.

Overdose

Frequent use of the drug in excessively high concentrations may cause signs of overdose, such as dryness in the nasal cavity, frequent headaches, a feeling of depression, as well as nausea, a sharp increase in blood pressure, and transient visual impairment.

In this case, you need to stop taking the medication and use antagonist drugs: alpha-blockers (such as tropaphen or phenolamine) and sympatholytics, as well as symptomatic treatment.

In case of accidental ingestion of the drug, in addition to the above measures, you should perform a gastric lavage procedure and also take enterosorbents and laxatives.

Interactions with other drugs

Pharmazoline can interact with other drugs only if they have resorptive properties. Adrenomimetic drugs from other groups increase the effectiveness of Pharmazoline, while sympatholytics with adrenolytics, as well as calcium antagonists, on the contrary, reduce it. The drug also increases the hypertensive effect of tricyclics and monoamine oxidase inhibitors on the cardiovascular system.
