Mentholatum has a disinfecting and local irritating effect. It is a complex medicine with several therapeutic elements in its composition.
After external treatment with medicinal ointment, menthol demonstrates local analgesic, disinfecting and local irritating activity. Moreover, camphor also has disinfecting and local irritating properties. [1]
Methyl salicylate has anti-inflammatory effects and can help relieve pain after being absorbed through the epidermis.
Indications Mentholatum
It is used in combination treatment to eliminate symptoms in the following disorders:
Release form
The release of the drug substance is realized in the form of an ointment for external treatment - inside jars with a volume of 30 g.
Dosing and administration
The ointment should be used for external treatment - the procedures are performed 2-3 times a day.
In the case of inflammation that affects the respiratory system, against which a cough develops, the medication is applied to the skin in the neck, sternum and back, after which the ointment must be rubbed.
In case of pain in the area of muscles of a different nature and localization, the painful area is treated with ointment, rubbing it with weak massaging movements.
The duration of the therapeutic cycle is selected by the attending physician.
- Application for children
Cannot be used on persons under 3 years of age.
Use Mentholatum during pregnancy
The use of Mentholatum while breastfeeding or pregnancy is allowed only with a medical appointment.
Contraindications
Among the contraindications:
- associated with the use of aspirin or other NSAIDs BA;
- damage to the epidermis;
- the presence of epidermal diseases in the areas where you need to apply the ointment;
- severe intolerance to the elements of the medication.
Side effects Mentholatum
The ointment can cause bronchial spasm or the development of allergy symptoms.
Interactions with other drugs
Methyl salicylate is able to potentiate the activity of methotrexate and anticoagulants during absorption - this must be taken into account when using Mentholatum.
Storage conditions
Mentholatum must be stored in a place out of the reach of small children. Temperature values - no more than 25 ° С.
Shelf life
Mentholatum can be used within 36 months from the date of release of the pharmaceutical product.
