Iodine solution 5% is available in the form of a solution (water-alcohol).

Iodine solution 5% contains elemental iodine, which has an irritating, antimicrobial effect when used locally.

Pharmacokinetics

A 5% iodine solution is absorbed into the bloodstream after application to the skin and can affect metabolism, especially the thyroid gland. It is excreted from the body mainly by the kidneys, a small amount is excreted with sweat and secretions from the mammary glands.

Dosing and administration

The medicine is used externally. The damaged area of skin should be treated with a cotton swab soaked in the solution.

For atherosclerosis, iodine solution is prescribed orally - 5-10 drops twice a day for 30 days (repeat treatment up to 3 times a year).

Pregnant women can use 5% iodine solution externally only.

Contraindications

The medication is not used in cases of iodine intolerance, diabetic or trophic ulcers.

The medication may cause allergic reactions (rash, Quincke's edema, etc.).

Overdose

In case of overdose, 5% iodine solution may provoke increased side effects (allergic reactions, acne). A burn at the site of application of the solution and local irritation are also possible.

Interactions with other drugs

A 5% iodine solution, taken simultaneously with other preparations for external use that contain organic compounds, can cause a disruption of the properties of protein components.

Storage conditions

Store the medicine in a place protected from moisture and sun; the storage temperature should not exceed 15°C. Keep out of reach of children.

Shelf life

The medicine is valid for 36 months from the date of manufacture.
