Indications Iodide-Pharmac

Iodide-farmak is prescribed for prophylactic purposes when there is an iodine deficiency in the environment.

The drug is also used for enlarged thyroid glands, severe forms of thyrotoxicosis before surgery or after a course of hormonal therapy.

Iodide-farmak promotes the production of thyroid hormones and prevents enlargement of the organ.

Pharmacokinetics

Iodide-farmak is absorbed in the small intestine two hours after administration and accumulates mainly in the thyroid gland, as well as in saliva, breast milk, and stomach.

It is excreted from the body mainly in urine, a small part is excreted through the lungs and in feces.

Dosing and administration

Iodide-farmak should be taken after meals to avoid irritation of the gastric mucosa. It is better to wash down the tablets with drinks that have the property of enveloping the mucosa (milk, jelly).

The course of treatment is on average from several months to several years, sometimes the drug must be taken throughout life. Usually prescribed 50-100 mcg per day for newborns, 150-200 mcg - during pregnancy and lactation, 100-200 mcg - for adults and adolescents.

The duration of treatment and dosage should be determined by a specialist.

For newborns and children, the drug can be mixed with food or drinks.

Use Iodide-Pharmac during pregnancy

Iodide-farmak is prescribed to women during pregnancy if necessary, the dosage should be determined by a doctor, since iodide penetrates into breast milk and overcomes the placental barrier and can provoke hyperthyroidism and an enlarged thyroid gland in the child.

Contraindications

Iodide-farmak is not prescribed in case of hypersensitivity to the components of the drug.

The drug is contraindicated in case of neoplasms in the thyroid gland, some kidney diseases, furunculosis, acne, excessive secretion of hormones by the thyroid gland, blood clotting disorders, herpetiform dermatitis, and pulmonary tuberculosis.

Side effects Iodide-Pharmac

Iodide-farmak extremely rarely causes side effects.

In some cases (especially when taking high doses of the drug), allergic reactions (including anaphylactic shock, Quincke's edema), diarrhea, tachycardia, insomnia, irritability, pain in the gastrointestinal tract, sweating are possible.

Overdose

Iodide-pharma in high doses (more than 300 mcg per day) can provoke excessive production of thyroid hormones, especially in old age.

Also, an overdose of the drug can cause irritation of the gastric mucosa, urticaria, allergic rhinitis, and Quincke's edema.

Taking more than 1000 mcg per day may result in decreased thyroid hormone production (hypothyroidism).

Interactions with other drugs

Iodide-pharma in case of hyperthyroidism can enhance or reduce antithyroid treatment, therefore it is necessary to exclude the use of drugs containing iodine.

Reduces the therapeutic effect of the drug perchlorate, thiocyanate, enhances thyroid-stimulating hormone.

The simultaneous use of iodide-pharma and potassium-sparing diuretics can provoke hyperkalemia, combinations with drugs containing lithium can cause an increase in the thyroid gland and a decrease in hormone production.

Iodide-farmak should be stored in a place protected from light and moisture, at a temperature not exceeding 25°C.
