Cough is an unconditional reflex, consisting of contraction of the respiratory tract muscles in response to irritation of their receptors. This is how nature has provided for the cleansing and release of the respiratory tract from foreign substances. Despite its beneficial role, it brings a lot of suffering and although it is only a symptom of a pathology that must be diagnosed and treated, its intensity must be reduced. For this purpose, various medications are used, one of which is Sinekod. [ 1 ]

Cough is an unconditional reflex consisting of contraction of the respiratory tract muscles in response to irritation of their receptors.

Indications synecode

What kind of cough is Sinekod used for? It is prescribed for dry, barking and debilitating coughs, and they can be of any origin: a consequence of smoking, whooping cough, various respiratory pathologies, including bronchial cancer. [ 2 ] The drug is used to suppress this reflex during various diagnostic procedures, such as bronchoscopy, surgical interventions, and after operations.

A wet cough requires medications that thin the mucus and facilitate its removal, so suppression of the cough centers with Sinekod will lead to mucus stagnation.

Release form

For ease of use by different age groups, the drug is available in several forms:

  • Sinekod for children's cough - drops, transparent liquid with vanilla scent and syrup with the same aroma;
  • For adults, pills, sometimes called tablets, and mixtures are suitable. [ 3 ]

Pharmacodynamics

Sinekod suppresses cough by directly influencing the cough center located in the brain: the signal to the bronchi is stopped, forced exhalation through the mouth does not occur. The drug is not a narcotic, and with the help of its active ingredient butamirate citrate, it acts on the central nervous system in such a way that it reduces the resistance of the respiratory muscles, increases the oxygen content in the blood, and facilitates breathing.

Pharmacokinetics

The active substance is completely and quickly absorbed, and is detected in the blood after 10 minutes. It is excreted mainly by the kidneys with urine.

Dosing and administration

Each dosage form of the drug has its own dosage:

  • drops - for children from 2 months to a year, the dosage regimen per dose is 10 drops, 1-3 years - 15 drops, 3 years and older - 25 drops 4 times a day;
  • syrup - for children aged 3-6 years, 5 ml is recommended, for children aged 6-12 years - 10 ml, for children aged 12 years and older, 15 ml three times a day, for adults, 4 times;
  • dragee - children 6-12 years old - 5 mg (one tablet) twice a day, 12 years and older - the same amount 3 times, adults - 10 ml (two) 2-3 times, swallowed whole with water.

Application for children

Sinekod drops can be used starting from two months of a child’s life, syrup - from three years, and dragees - from six years.

Use synecode during pregnancy

Clinical studies on this category of patients have not been conducted, therefore, Sinekod is not prescribed in the first trimester, and in the following two trimesters, the decision is left to the doctor, while the benefit to the expectant mother outweighs the risk to the future child. The same approach is used during breastfeeding, since it is not known whether butamirate metabolites penetrate into breast milk.

Contraindications

In addition to the above restrictions regarding children, pregnant and lactating women, the drug is contraindicated for people with an allergic reaction to its components.

Side effects synecode

This cough suppressant occasionally causes side effects such as drowsiness, nausea, rash, hives, swelling, and itching. It may also happen that Sinekod makes coughing worse, which is a sign that a different type of cough suppressant is needed.

Overdose

Sinekod overdose causes nausea, drowsiness, vomiting, diarrhea, and blood pressure may drop sharply. In such cases, gastric lavage, enterosorbents, and symptomatic treatment are required.

Interactions with other drugs

Sinekod is not taken simultaneously with medications that ensure the discharge of bronchial secretions, as it can cause the accumulation of sputum in the respiratory tract and lead to the development of bronchospasm.

Storage conditions

The drug should be stored in a dark place, out of reach of children. The room temperature should not exceed +25°C.

Shelf life

The drug is suitable for use for 3 years from the date of manufacture.

Analogues

Sometimes Sinekod does not help with cough, then its analogues with a different active substance are used. Among them: estocin (dimenoxadol) - an analgesic narcotic [ 4 ], bronholitin (glaucine hydrobromide and ephedrine hydrochloride) [ 5 ], bithiodine (tipepidine), glaucine (an alkaloid from the yellow poppy plant), libexin (prenoxdiazine hydrochloride), rengalin (antibodies to bradykinin, histamine, morphine affinity purified) [ 6 ].

Reviews

Among the reviews regarding the therapeutic effect of the drug, there are both positive and negative. Some emphasize its affordability, the ability to quickly eliminate a painful cough, others complain that it did not help. Although Sinekod is sold without a prescription, the best option is not to self-medicate, but to buy and take it as prescribed by a doctor.
