Indications for use
If the cough is dry and, accordingly, unproductive, medications in the form of a spray will be very helpful. In this format, the drug, when sprayed, will get on the inflamed area, thus having a local effect. This will stop the inflammation and eliminate the symptoms of the disease.
When choosing a cough spray, you need to pay attention to the type of cough you have and also consider the reason for its occurrence.
Nowadays, there are a huge number of different sprays that help cope with cough. Therefore, it is obvious that finding a drug that is 100% suitable for any person will not be difficult. You will be able to find a medicine that will take into account all your individual characteristics. Among the most famous and frequently used sprays, the following drugs stand out:
- Tantum Verde;
- Bioparox;
- Chlorophyllipt;
- Pharyngosept;
- Hexoral;
- Ingalipt;
- Salbutamol.
Pharmacodynamics
Pharmacodynamics of the drug Lazolvan: ambroxol hydrochloride improves the production of mucus in the respiratory organs, stimulates the development of ciliary activity, increases the process of synthesis of pulmonary surfactant. All this helps to improve the process of secretion and removal of mucus from the body.
Salbutamol is a selective agonist of the so-called ß2-adrenoreceptors. The therapeutic dose affects the receptors in the smooth muscles of the bronchi, also slightly affecting the myocardium, its ß1-adrenoreceptors. The drug has a pronounced bronchodilating effect, thereby eliminating the possibility of spasms in the bronchi. In addition, it reduces the level of resistance in the lungs, increasing their vital capacity.
When using the medicine in inhalation manipulations, its effect begins quickly - immediately 5 minutes after use - and lasts for 4-6 hours.
Hexoral cough aerosol suppresses oxidative reactions of bacterial metabolism, it has a wide range of antibacterial effects, so it treats infections from Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Proteus well. At a concentration of 100 mg/ml, the drug is able to destroy most bacterial strains. The drug also slightly anesthetizes the throat mucosa.
Pharmacokinetics
Hexoral Hexetidine is almost not absorbed into the mucous membrane, adhering perfectly to it. After a single use of the spray, the substance remains on the gums for about 65 hours. It remains in dental plaque for about 10-14 hours.
Lazolvan - this cough aerosol provides rapid absorption of ambroxol, which has a linear dependence in the therapeutic range. The substance is maximally concentrated in plasma in a period of half an hour to 3 hours. About 90% of the drug in plasma adheres to proteins. Ambroxol is quickly distributed between tissues and blood, increasing the concentration of active components in the lungs. The drug is half-excreted from plasma in 7-12 hours, does not accumulate in tissues. About 90% of the drug leaves the body through the kidneys.
After inhalation, Salbutamol reaches the lower respiratory tract - about 10-20% of the dose. The rest settles on the throat mucosa, after which it is swallowed. The half-life of the drug lasts about 4-6 hours through the kidneys. The form remains partially unchanged. Another part is excreted as an inactive metabolite of phenol sulfate. The rest leaves with feces and bile (4%). The process of eliminating the drug from the patient's body lasts about 72 hours.
Cough spray names
There are many different medications that can cure a cough.
Chlorophyllipt spray is good for coughing. It is made on the basis of eucalyptus extract – eucalyptus ball acts as an active additive. The aerosol is an antiseptic and has an anti-inflammatory effect, improving the general condition of the patient and relieving attacks of painful dry cough.
The antiseptic drug Ingalipt, which is made on the basis of soluble streptocide, can also relieve dry cough. In addition, among the components of the drug, you can find such substances as thymol, peppermint and eucalyptus oil, sodium sulfathiazole hexahydrate. The drug has a combined effect on the area of the disease. This cough aerosol is used in the treatment of throat diseases.
Faringosept spray has only a local effect, without affecting other organs of the body located near the affected area. The drug is used for dry cough, as it quickly eliminates inflammation, moisturizing the throat and its mucous membrane, thereby eliminating constant cough. For treatment, it will be enough to do 3-4 injections per day. The course of treatment itself is recommended to be carried out no more than 2 weeks.
Cough spray for children
Cough can be a symptom of a variety of diseases. Medicines for its elimination are selected depending on its type - for example, if the throat is irritated with a tearing dry cough, a spray should be used. Its use allows the medicine to get exactly to the site of inflammation, thereby helping to eliminate cough symptoms.
A cough spray for a child differs from the medications that adults take. Sprays for children should be such that they will not irritate the mucous membrane of the baby's throat, and will not cause any allergic reaction. The drug should be used only locally; it is impossible for the medicine to get into the child's respiratory tract. In general, before you start using the spray, it is recommended to consult with a qualified pediatrician.
If the use of cough spray causes signs of allergy in a child, it is necessary to call a doctor immediately. An allergic reaction is fraught with swelling of the vocal cords and larynx, which is extremely dangerous. It should also be remembered that it is strictly forbidden to give any medicinal aerosols to children under 3 years of age.

Aerosol for allergic cough
Often, the respiratory organs are the first to suffer from allergies. Many allergy sufferers complain of symptoms such as swelling of the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract, paranasal sinuses, nose, and a feeling of suffocation.
In such a problem, an anti-allergy spray will be very effective. It works in much the same way as a cough spray, getting to the place where the irritant causing the allergic reaction is located. Then the medicine will immediately, as soon as it hits the mucous membrane of the throat, begin its beneficial effect.
When the patient does not have life-threatening problems with the heart and blood pressure, and the disorders due to allergies are minor, the aerosol sprayed on the mucous membrane will reduce the number and strength of attacks of allergic reactions.
Each spray, which contains anti-allergens, acts on the principle of direct impact on the mucous membrane of the throat or nose, soothing it and reducing the area of inflammation.
In addition, anti-allergy sprays may contain components that can cope with local allergic reactions. Their action leads to the fact that tissue mast cells, which create substances that can cause allergies, are reduced in number.

Aerosols for dry cough
If you have a cough, you should start treating it immediately, because it is quite an unpleasant symptom. It is necessary to determine exactly what caused it, because the method of treatment is prescribed depending on this. For example, if irritation occurs in the throat, with a tearing dry cough, you should use a cough aerosol as a medicine. But it is important to remember that children should not take medications intended for adults.
There are several most popular aerosols that work on the principle of local action, immediately eliminating symptoms and soothing cough. Among such drugs, we highlight Ingalipt, Chlorophyllipt, Faringosept and Tantum Verde.
The above mentioned aerosols are considered to be the most effective and easy to use, which is why they are usually included in the lists of the best cough medicines.
The cough aerosol contains microparticles that enhance the effect of its action - getting on the inflamed mucous membrane of the respiratory tract and removing irritation. Changes for the better appear shortly after the start of using the medicine - the symptoms begin to disappear, the cough subsides.
How to use cough sprays
Kameton spray is applied to the oral cavity using a dispenser. The duration of each inhalation is approximately 3-5 seconds. For adults and children over 5 years old, inhalations are prescribed 3-4 times a day for 1-2 days. Often, this spray is taken together with other medications. When applying the substance, the can should be in a vertical position, with the spray upward. Do not let the spray get into your eyes. If this does happen, rinse your eyes with clean water and then visit a doctor.
Hexoral spray is applied to the mucous membrane of the throat or mouth - this drug allows you to quickly and without complications spray the medicine on the inflamed areas. Before applying, you need to put a nozzle on the can, which is a sprayer, then direct it to the inflamed area of the mouth. During inhalation, the can should be in a vertical position. Press on the sprayer for 1-2 seconds. When introducing the medicine, hold your breath.
Yox cough aerosol is used 2-4 times a day, or, if necessary, every 4 hours. Before use, remove the cap, put on the nozzle, press it 2-3 times to fill it with solution. Then insert the nozzle into the mouth and spray 2-3 times left and right. After use, rinse the nozzle with running water.
Using Cough Sprays During Pregnancy
Treatment of expectant mothers is a more complex process, since everything that affects their body also affects the developing fetus. That is why, in case of illness, pregnant women are prescribed drugs that will not have a negative effect on the child. In case of throat problems, doctors prescribe treatment that can eliminate the cause of the cough. At the same time, drugs are prescribed that are safe even for small children.
Below is a list of medications that are approved for use in treating colds in pregnant women.
Ingalipt cough spray is great for treating throat swelling. It can even be used to treat children under one year old, so it is also great for pregnant women.
Orasept spray, approved for treatment of infants. It will be safe for pregnant women, without having a negative effect on the child.
For safety reasons, it is also worth mentioning medications that are strictly prohibited to prescribe during pregnancy, as their effect on the child can have dangerous consequences. Among them are aerosols such as Bioparox and Teraflu, as well as Strepsils. Various local antibiotics are also prohibited during pregnancy.
Contraindications for use
Cough sprays have an anti-inflammatory antiseptic analgesic effect and are approved for use in children aged 3 years and over. A child can take the medicine only under adult supervision and as prescribed by a doctor. The medicine should be on the mucous membrane of the throat for 3-5 minutes. Until this time has passed, you cannot swallow saliva, eat or drink. Below is a list of drugs that are most often prescribed for coughs, and contraindications to them.
- Tantum Verde has the following contraindications: it should not be used by children under 3 years of age and in case of allergy to the components of the drug.
- Ingalipt - this cough aerosol has the following contraindications: it is prohibited in the presence of an allergy to individual components of the drug and for children under three years of age.
- Kameton has the following contraindications: it is not recommended for children under 5 years of age and in case of allergy to some components of the medicine.
- Stopangin has the following contraindications: allergy to various components of the medication, atrophic pharyngitis, in the 1st trimester of pregnancy, children under 8 years of age.
- Contraindications for the drug Hexoral-spray: allergy to the components of the drug, children under 3 years of age.
- Thera Flu Lar is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to ammonia compounds and lidocaine, during breastfeeding in the 1st trimester of pregnancy, and for children under 4 years of age.
Side effects of cough sprays
Local use of the drug Tantum Verde can cause burning, numbness and dry mouth. Patients tolerate the drug well, only sometimes a burning sensation at the site of application or an allergic reaction may occur. Vomiting is possible when swallowing the drug. But these side effects pass quickly and without the need to stop taking the drug. Since the drug contains ethyl alcohol, you should not interact with dangerous mechanisms or drive a car for about 30 minutes after using it.
The cough aerosol Kameton has few negative reviews, as it is tolerated by patients quite well. Side effects are possible due to high sensitivity to the components of the drug itself - burning and dryness of the mucous membrane of the throat and nose, swelling in the area of spray, skin rash, itching.
Ingalipt - this spray can cause an allergy if the patient has increased sensitivity to some of its components. You may also feel a sore throat and burning sensation, nausea and vomiting may occur. Since Ingalipt contains essential oils, children may develop a skin rash. An allergic reaction may also occur in pregnant women.
Overdose
Overdosing on Bioparox causes symptoms such as numbness in the mouth, circulatory problems, burning and sore throat, dizziness. In such cases, treatment should be symptomatic and under observation.
Salbutamol overdose causes side effects such as tachycardia, decreased blood pressure, nausea, muscle tremors, and vomiting. Taking a large dose of the drug can lead to hypokalemia, so you need to monitor the potassium level in the blood serum.
In case of overdose, salbutamol treatment should be stopped immediately and the necessary therapy should be performed according to the symptoms. In this case, cardioselective beta-adrenergic blockers can be used for patients who suffer from tachycardia. This procedure should be carried out with caution if the patient has a history of bronchospasms.
Teraflu Lar can cause vomiting and nausea if overdosed. Since the drug contains only a small amount of lidocaine, it does not cause too dangerous symptoms if an excessively large dose of the drug is taken. To get rid of the discomfort, you need to eat an egg white beaten in water or drink a glass of milk.
Interactions with other drugs
Salbutamol should not be used with non-selective beta-blockers such as propranolol. It is also contraindicated in patients receiving monoamine oxidase inhibitors. This drug enhances the effects of stimulants on the central nervous system.
Taking salbutamol with theophylline and other xanthines may increase the risk of tachyarrhythmia. Severe ventricular arrhythmias may occur when inhaled drugs are used.
Concomitant use with m-anticholinergics may increase intraocular pressure, and use with diuretics and glucocorticosteroids increases the hypokalemic effect of the drug.
The benzoxonium chloride contained in TeraFlu LAR will reduce its effectiveness if used simultaneously with anionic active substances, such as toothpaste. The absorption of benzoxonium chloride increases in combination with ethanol.
Yox cough aerosol should not be combined with other antiseptic drugs that are applied locally to the oral mucosa. It is especially incompatible with drugs that contain hydrogen peroxide, as it inactivates the aerosol.
