One of the representatives of the perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the poppy family is the celandine grass. This familiar plant grows almost to a meter in height. It can be found in the fields of Europe, the Caucasus, and in Central Asian countries. Most often, folk medicine uses the upper part of the plant, although the use of its roots is not excluded.
Celandine herb is used in many folk medicine recipes. However, it should be remembered that this plant is used strictly according to prescription schemes, and in some cases constant doctor's supervision is recommended. Celandine herb is a special plant that can cure many diseases, but if used incorrectly and uncontrolled, it can cause serious poisoning.
Indications celandine herb
In the old days, the herb Celandine was often used to treat skin tuberculosis, rheumatism and gout. External use of the plant was popular for getting rid of warts and calluses, lichen lesions, eczematous rashes and skin cancer: mainly the juice of the stems and ointments prepared on its basis were used. A decoction of the plant was often used to bathe children with all sorts of skin lesions.
In modern recipes of traditional medicine, the herb Celandine is used as an infusion or leading raw material in the composition of medicinal collections, which are successfully used for liver diseases and cholecystitis, for the treatment of gout and many dermatitis. There are recorded cases of healing from psoriasis with hot baths with celandine. For this disease, ointments on a fat basis using an extract or juice of celandine are also effective, against the background of internal use of tincture on celandine.
Positive results have been obtained from clinical trials using Celandine herb in the treatment of pruritic dermatosis.
During the tests, aqueous extracts from fresh or dry raw materials were used, which were applied in the form of compresses, lotions or baths. After two or three days, patients noted the disappearance of itching, tightening of wounds and erosions, and a decrease in skin infiltration. The treatment was completed by using ointments based on celandine herb, which once again proved the presence of restorative and keratolytic abilities of the plant.
Long-term observations have proven the antipruritic, anti-inflammatory and regenerative properties of celandine.
Celandine herb is effective against periodontal disease (pyorrhea), stomatitis, poorly healing wound surfaces, and erosive lesions.

Pharmacodynamics
Pharmacodynamic properties are very versatile. Meanwhile, the main properties of the plant are rightfully considered to be antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory and choleretic. The most pronounced activity is demonstrated by the alkaloids of the plant. For example, the effect of chelidonine - calming and analgesic - resembles the properties of the well-known strongest alkaloids papaverine and morphine. In addition, this alkaloid is able to lower blood pressure, slow the heart rate, and relieve smooth muscle spasms.
The next alkaloid of the plant, homochelidonine, has a somewhat opposite effect, producing a convulsive-stimulating effect.
Protopine – has a calming effect on the autonomic nervous system and increases smooth muscle tone.
Of the many components of celandine, perhaps the most well-known is sanguiritrin. This substance has a pronounced anticholinesterase effect, and also enhances the effect of acetylcholine and facilitates muscle-nerve conduction.
Sanguiritrin has a destructive effect on both gram (+) and gram (-) microorganisms, Candida and Trichomonas.
