Biosept is included in the category of drugs with antiseptic properties. In addition, it can be used as a disinfectant.

When used externally, the drug, in addition to disinfecting, has a local irritating effect. The drug can also coagulate proteins. Gram-negative and -positive microbes are sensitive to its effects - both viruses and bacteria. [ 1 ]

After 15 minutes from the moment of taking the substance internally, it begins to demonstrate the effect of the so-called “foam suppressor”.

Indications Biosept

It is used for local treatment - as an external antiseptic, allowing to disinfect the skin on the hands (for surgeons), as well as to treat panaritiums, furuncles and infiltrates with mastitis in the initial stages of development.

It can be prescribed as an irritant – for compresses and rubdowns.

Release form

The component is released in the form of a liquid for external treatment - inside bottles with a capacity of 0.1 l.

Pharmacodynamics

The main active ingredient of the medicine is ethyl alcohol (it comes in different percentage proportions). The substance is a monohydric alcohol, which is also called alcohol, methylcarbinol or simply alcohol. In addition to providing an antiseptic effect, ethanol can be used as a solvent, fuel or filler for thermometers.

Demonstrates tanning activity in relation to mucous membranes and dermis.

After oral use of ethyl alcohol, a powerful stimulating effect on the central nervous system (especially on the cerebral cortex) develops. The effect of the substance leads to a weakening of the inhibitory processes.

Then the intensity of CNS excitation begins to decrease, and instead the activity of the medulla oblongata and spinal cord begins to be suppressed, and the activity of the respiratory center slows down.

Dosing and administration

For external treatment procedures, the liquid is applied to the epidermis using wipes or cotton swabs.

If a compress is required, the medicine is dissolved in clean water in a 1:1 ratio.

  • Application for children

The medicine is not prescribed in pediatrics – to persons under 14 years of age.

Use Biosept during pregnancy

The medication should not be prescribed during pregnancy.

If there is a need to use Biosept during breastfeeding, breastfeeding should be discontinued for the duration of treatment.

Contraindications

The drug should not be used by people with severe intolerance to the active component of the drug or its auxiliary elements. In addition, it is prohibited to prescribe if the patient has severe inflammation on the epidermis. Other contraindications:

  • therapy of pulmonary edema;

  • epidermal irritation;
  • irritation affecting the mucous membranes;
  • suppression of CNS function.

Overdose

In case of using the drug for external procedures, overdose development was not observed. With intravenous or oral administration of large doses of the drug, the following symptoms may be observed:

  • suppression of the activity of the respiratory center;
  • comatose state (manifestations include facial hyperemia, vomiting, decreased temperature, constriction of the pupils, sticky and cold skin, as well as involuntary defecation and urination; if progressed, nystagmus, respiratory distress, and tachycardia develop);
  • aspiration of vomiting, convulsions or laryngospasm;
  • respiratory arrest associated with mechanical asphyxia;
  • suppression of the cardiovascular system.

In case of intoxication, it is necessary to carry out symptomatic actions, perform gastric lavage and induce vomiting, and also give the patient enterosorbents.

Interactions with other drugs

Oral administration of ethyl alcohol together with nitrofurans leads to an increase in the toxicity index of the latter.

The introduction of ethanol in combination with antidiabetic agents can provoke a hypoglycemic coma.

Ethyl alcohol may weaken the effect of thiamine.

Use in combination with aspirin increases the risk of stomach ulcers.

Use together with sleeping pills can cause severe respiratory problems.

Ethyl alcohol increases the level of neurotoxicity of cephalosporins with penicillins and fluoroquinolones (regardless of the route by which ethanol was administered - by intravenous injection or orally).
