Biofer is a Fe medicine that is combined with different components.

The complex containing Fe(3) hydroxide and polymaltose is a macromolecular water-soluble combination of polynuclear Fe(3) and partially hydrolyzed dextrin (is a polymaltose).

Iron is an essential element that the body requires to form hemoglobin and to carry out tissue oxidation processes.

Vitamin B9 is an external source of folate, which is needed by the human body to perform the binding of nucleoproteins, and at the same time to maintain the normal function of erythropoiesis.

Indications Biofer

It is used in case of anemia of iron deficiency origin.

Release form

The medicine is released in tablets - 4 pieces inside a cell plate (1 plate inside a pack) or 10 pieces inside a blister pack (3 packs inside a box).

Pharmacodynamics

The polynuclear Fe(3) core is superficially surrounded by a number of covalently synthesized polymaltose molecules, resulting in the formation of a molecular complex with a total molecular weight of approximately 52,300 Da. This molecule is very large, so its diffusion through mucosal walls is approximately 40 times less than that of a hexaaquo-Fe(2) unit.

It should be taken into account that the Fe values within the polymaltose complex in the case of iron deficiency conditions increase more intensively than with other Fe substances. [ 1 ]

Vitamin B9 (administered parenterally or orally) stimulates the production of white blood cells with red blood cells and platelets in people with megaloblastic anemia.[ 2 ]

Pharmacokinetics

The bioavailability of Fe(3) obtained from food and artificial hydroxides depends on the rate of release of Fe from these products, as well as on the index of iron-synthesizing proteins (for example, mobilpherin with integrins).

B9-vitamin has a high rate of absorption (mainly within the promaximal region of the small intestine) and distribution within tissues. Among its main depots is the liver; in addition, the substance is actively distributed within the cerebrospinal fluid.

Dosing and administration

The portion sizes and duration of the treatment cycle are selected only by the attending physician. These parameters are determined by the intensity of iron deficiency. Often adults are prescribed to take 1 tablet 2-3 times a day (60 minutes before eating).

For a child over 6 years old, use a dosage of 1 tablet 1 time per day.

The duration of therapy is determined by the effect the drug has on the level of anemia.

The tablets must be chewed thoroughly.

  • Application for children

Persons under 6 years of age should use the drug in syrup form.

Use Biofer during pregnancy

During breastfeeding and pregnancy, Biofer can only be used with the permission of a doctor.

Contraindications

Among the contraindications:

  • hemosiderosis or -chromatosis;
  • anemia of the sideroblastic type;
  • hemolysis in the chronic stage;
  • thalassemia;
  • anemia resulting from lead poisoning;
  • severe intolerance to vitamin B9 and Fe, as well as other elements of the drug;
  • frequent blood transfusions.

Side effects Biofer

The main side effects are stomach pain, diarrhea, black stools and nausea.

Overdose

In case of poisoning, the side effects of the drug are potentiated. Large portions of Fe salts lead to damage and irritation of the mucous membranes, which can result in its perforation and necrosis.

In case of intoxication, standard procedures must be followed – remove the unabsorbed substance from the gastrointestinal tract using a solution of baking soda (part of this solution should remain in the stomach). The fluid deficit can be replenished by introducing a solution of sodium lactate, NaCl and glucose. In addition, symptomatic and supportive actions are performed.

Interactions with other drugs

It is prohibited to combine Biofer with tetracycline, because this leads to a weakening of the absorption of both elements of the drug.

The absorption of Fe salts is reduced when using antacids or drinking tea.

The therapeutic effect of penicillamine is enhanced when combined with Fe salts.

Storage conditions

Biofer should be stored in a place closed to small children and moisture penetration. The temperature level should not exceed 25°C.

Shelf life

Biofer can be used for a period of 3 years from the date of production of the medicinal substance.

Analogues

Analogues of the drug are Ferri-Fol with Likferr-Folli, as well as Maltofer Fol.
