Biofer is a Fe medicine combined with various components.

The complex containing Fe (3) hydroxide and polymaltose is a macromolecular water-soluble combination of polynuclear Fe (3), as well as partially hydrolyzed dextrin (is polymaltose).

Iron is an essential element that the body needs to form hemoglobin, as well as to carry out tissue oxidation processes.

Vitamin B9 is an external source of folate, which is needed by the human body to perform binding of nucleoproteins, and at the same time maintain the normal function of erythropoiesis.

Indications Biofer

It is used in case of iron deficiency anemia.

Release form

The drug is released in tablets - 4 pieces inside a cell plate (1 plate inside a pack) or 10 pieces inside a blister pack (3 packs inside a box).

Pharmacodynamics

The nucleus of the polynuclear Fe (3) surface is surrounded by a number of covalently synthesized polymaltose molecules, resulting in the formation of a molecular complex having a total molecular weight of about 52300 Da. This molecule has a very large size, so its diffusion through the walls of mucous membranes is approximately 40 times less than that of a unit of hexaaquo-Fe (2).

It should be taken into account that the Fe indices inside the polymaltose complex in the case of states with a lack of iron, increase more intensively than with other Fe substances. [1]

Vitamin B9 (administered parenterally or orally) stimulates the production of leukocytes with erythrocytes and platelets in people with megaloblastic anemia. [2]

Pharmacokinetics

The level of bioavailability of Fe (3) obtained from food and artificial hydroxides depends on the rate of release of Fe from these products, as well as on the rate of proteins synthesizing iron (for example, mobilferin with integrins).

B9-vitamin has a high rate of absorption (mainly within the maximal region of the small intestine) and distribution within tissues. Its main depots include the liver; in addition, the substance is actively distributed inside the cerebrospinal fluid.

Dosing and administration

Serving sizes and duration of the treatment cycle are selected only by the attending physician. These parameters are determined by the intensity of iron deficiency. Often, adults are prescribed to take 1 tablet 2-3 times a day (60 minutes before eating).

For a child over 6 years old, use a dosage of 1 tablet 1 time per day.

The duration of therapy is determined by the effect of the medication on the level of anemia.

The tablets must be chewed thoroughly.

  • Application for children

Persons under the age of 6 should use the drug in the form of a syrup.

Use Biofer during pregnancy

During breastfeeding and pregnancy, Biofer can only be used with the permission of a doctor.

Contraindications

Among the contraindications:

  • hemosiderosis or chromatosis;
  • sideroblastic anemia;
  • chronic hemolysis;
  • thalassemia;
  • anemia due to lead intoxication;
  • severe intolerance to B9-vitamin and Fe, as well as other elements of the drug;
  • frequent blood transfusions.

Side effects Biofer

The main side symptoms are stomach pain, diarrhea, black-colored stools and nausea.

Overdose

In case of poisoning, side effects of drugs are potentiated. Large portions of Fe salts lead to damage and irritation of the mucous membranes, which can result in perforation and necrosis.

In case of intoxication, it is required to perform standard procedures - to remove the unabsorbed substance from the gastrointestinal tract using a solution of baking soda (part of this solution should remain inside the stomach). You can replenish the fluid deficit by introducing a solution of Na, NaCl and glucose lactate. In addition, symptomatic and supportive actions are performed.

Interactions with other drugs

It is forbidden to combine Biofer with tetracycline, because this leads to a weakening of the absorption of both elements of the drug.

The absorption of Fe salts is reduced in the case of using antacids or drinking tea.

The therapeutic effect of penicillamine is enhanced when combined with Fe salts.

Storage conditions

Biofer must be kept out of the reach of small children and moisture. The temperature level is not higher than the 25 ° C mark.

Shelf life

Biofer can be used within a 3-year period from the date of production of the drug substance.

Analogs

The analogues of drugs are Ferri-Fol with Likferr-Folly, as well as Maltofer Fol.
