Pharmacodynamics

The main active ingredient of the drug, betahistine, affects the histamine H3 and H1 receptors of the labyrinth and vestibular nuclei of the central nervous system. Avertide exhibits a pronounced H1-antagonist effect on the receptors of the vessels of the inner ear, due to which local vasodilation and significant improvement of blood circulation in the stria vascularis occur. Due to the H3-antagonist effect of the drug on the receptors of the vestibular nuclei, microcirculation and capillary permeability improve, histamine release increases, fluid exchange at the level of the microcirculatory bed of the vascular stria increases, and endolymph pressure in the labyrinth and cochlea is normalized. Thanks to betahistine, neuronal transmission processes improve due to the fact that the concentration of serotonin in the synapses increases.

Avertid is an inhibitor of the enzyme diamine oxidase, which inactivates histamine. In addition, betahistine binds to potential-dependent calcium channels of nerve cells, which are directly involved in the processes of ischemic origin. Avertid does not affect the H2-histamine receptors of the stomach, therefore the secretion and concentration of hydrochloric acid, both basal and stimulated, increases. Betahistine does not have a sedative effect, systemic arterial pressure indicators do not change from it. Betahistine is not characterized by extrapyramidal disorders compared to other similar drugs, such as, for example, compared to cinnarizine, flunarizine. Therefore, Avertid can be freely used in the treatment of elderly people who have Parkinson's syndrome.

Pharmacokinetics

After the solution enters the human body, betahistine is completely absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, only a small part of the substance can bind to blood proteins. Avertid does not accumulate in the body's tissues, nor does it have a cumulative effect. Together with urine, betahistine is completely excreted as an inactive metabolite of 2-pyridyl-acetic acid within 24 hours. The half-life of the drug is three to four hours.

Dosing and administration

The medicine is prescribed to adults twice or three times a day, after or during meals. Avertid is used orally, the dose is measured with a syringe, which is attached to the package. Sometimes the solution is not diluted, then it is better to wash it down with a small amount of liquid. Another way is to dilute the drug Avertid with water. For treatment, Avertid is usually used from fourteen days to three months - it depends on the clinical effects that will manifest. Avertid works best if taken for a long time.

Dosages of Avertid:

Adults take Avertid solution in the amount of eight milligrams three times a day. If the symptoms of the disease are pronounced or the treatment was ineffective, then the dose is increased to sixteen milligrams (two milliliters) three times a day or take the drug in the amount of twenty-four milligrams (three milliliters) twice a day.

Doctors recommend taking a maximum of forty-eight milligrams of the drug per day.

Interactions with other drugs

When Avertid is used together with histamine H1 receptor blockers, the main active ingredient of the drug Avertid acts less effectively. Therefore, before starting to take the drug, doctors recommend stopping the use of antihistamines.

Avertide contains five percent ethyl alcohol, this should be taken into account when treating with disulfiram or its derivatives, as well as when using drugs that block acetaldehyde breakdown enzymes (for example, metronidazole, nitrofuran derivatives).
