Alox is an antibacterial drug for topical ophthalmic use.

The active component of the drug is the substance ciprofloxacin, to which most of the gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, are highly sensitive in vitro. Along with this, the drug demonstrates activity against many gram-positive microbes (among them, for example, streptococci with staphylococci). [1]

Indications Alox

It is used for ulcers affecting the cornea and superficial infections of the eyes and ocular appendages, which are provoked by strains sensitizing to ciprofloxacin (among them Pseudomonas aeruginosa).

Release form

The release of the medicinal substance is realized in the form of eye drops, inside 5 ml vials. Inside the pack - 1 such bottle.

Pharmacodynamics

The antimicrobial effect of ciprofloxacin is based on slowing down the activity of DNA gyrase (this is an enzyme that microbes require to bind DNA). Resistance to ciprofloxacin appears rarely. There is no information on the emergence of plasmid-induced bacterial resistance to fluoroquinolones.

The specific principle of the effect of ciprofloxacin ensures its effect against bacteria resistant to other antibacterial drugs (for example, aminoglycosides, peptides, b-lactams, macrolides and tetracyclines), and in addition to trimethoprim, sulfonamides and nitrofuran derivatives.

Pharmacokinetics

After local eye treatment, systemic absorption of ciprofloxacin is observed. Plasma indicators of the drug are no more than 4.7 ng / ml (almost 450 times lower than the values recorded with a single intake of 0.25 g of ciprofloxacin inside).

Dosing and administration

Therapy for ulcers affecting the cornea.

Alox must be instilled around the clock (also at night) according to the scheme described below:

  • 1st day: 2 drops in each eye at 15-minute intervals during the first 6 hours, and then at the same dosage at half-hour intervals;
  • 2nd day: 2 drops at 1-hour intervals;
  • in the period 3-14 days: 2 drops with 4-hour breaks.

If necessary, the treatment course can be extended.

Superficial lesions of the eyes and ocular appendages of a bacterial nature.

For 2 days, 1-2 drops of the medicine are instilled into the area of the conjunctival sac (during the day, at 2-hour intervals). Then 1-2 drops are applied at 4-hour intervals until the symptoms of the disease disappear.

  • Application for children

There is no information on the medicinal efficacy and safety when using drugs in pediatrics, which is why it is not prescribed for children.

Use Alox during pregnancy

With hepatitis B and pregnancy, Alox is used only in cases where the likely benefits of its use outweigh the possible risks.

Contraindications

It is contraindicated to use in case of severe intolerance to quinolones or other elements of the medication.

Side effects Alox

After instillation, there may be discomfort and burning in the eye area, a feeling of a foreign object, conjunctival hyperemia, itching, as well as the appearance of crust on the edges of the eyelids (scales or crystals) and an unpleasant taste.

Signs of allergy, keratitis / keratopathy, photophobia, swelling of the eyelids, nausea, corneal infiltration and lacrimation, or decreased visual acuity may develop. Symptoms of intolerance may also occur.

In persons with an ulcer in the corneal region, who often used the drug, the appearance of a crystalline plaque of white color was noted (it disappeared during the course of therapy). Such plaque does not have a negative effect on the patient and does not interfere with therapy.

Overdose

When used locally, the risk of overdose is very low. When injecting an excessive amount of drugs, you should rinse your eyes with running water.

Interactions with other drugs

Potentiation of the effect of ciprofloxacin is observed when combined with aminoglycosides, metronidazole, vancomycin, as well as with β-lactam antibiotics and clindamycin.

Storage conditions

Alox should be kept out of the reach of children, in a dark place. Temperature indicators - no more than 25 ° С.

Shelf life

Alox can be applied within a 24-month term from the date of manufacture of the therapeutic substance.

Analogs

Analogs of the medication are Ciloxan, Ciprofloxacin with Cipromed, and in addition Ciproxol, Ciprofarm with Ciprolet and Floximed with Cipronex.
