Teturam is a medicine prescribed for chronic alcoholism. It is used in situations where other methods are ineffective.
After drinking alcohol, the medication causes a person to feel discomfort, leads to a feeling of fear or heat in the upper body, reddening of the epidermis, increased heart rate, breathing problems, noise in the head and squeezing in the sternum, and also lowers blood pressure. [1]
Indications Teturam
It is used in persons with alcohol dependence to prevent the development of relapses during therapy.
Release form
The drug is released in the form of tablets - 30 or 50 pieces inside a bottle, pack or can.
Pharmacodynamics
The drug mainly acts on the metabolism of alcohol within the blood, potentiating its negative effect on the body. Alcohol is biotransformed by blocking enzyme groups and metal ions responsible for neutralizing the effect of alcohol on the body. [2]
Pharmacokinetics
When administered orally, the drug is absorbed at a high rate, but not fully (by 70-90%) inside the gastrointestinal tract. The duration of the influence of drugs is 48 hours.
Disulfiram at a high rate participates in metabolism - through reduction with the formation of diethyldithiocarbamate, released in the form of conjugates, or diethylamine with carbon disulfide (within 4-53%). Excretion of carbon disulfide is realized through the lungs. [3]
Dosing and administration
It is necessary to use the medication only under the strict supervision of the attending doctor.
For each patient, the dosage is individually selected. Medium portions (250-500 mg per day) are carried by the body without complications, without causing the development of side signs, and are also rapidly excreted from the body.
The standard therapy regimen is implemented according to the scheme described below - in several phases or tests.
The first alcohol test is performed approximately 7 days after the start of treatment. You should take a daily dose of drugs in the morning, and then 20-30 ml of alcohol (often 40% vodka is used).
The second test is performed at a hospital under the supervision of a doctor after 2 days, and at home - after 3-5 days.
With a weak response of the body, during a new test, the portion of alcohol is increased by 10-20 ml. When testing, it is allowed to consume no more than 100-120 ml of alcohol.
The response to alcohol can be mild, moderate, or severe.
In the case of a severe response (manifestations - pulsation and a feeling of fullness in the head, a decrease in blood pressure, severe breathing problems, increased speech arousal and motor activity, as well as convulsions), symptomatic actions are performed (use of subcutaneous, intravenous and intramuscular injections of camphor with coriamine, methylene blue liquid and lobelia with cytiton; in addition, oxygen inhalations are carried out).
Subsequent actions are determined taking into account the emerging symptoms and the body's response. During all procedures performed, the patient should be in a supine position.
- Application for children
There is no information regarding the use of the medication in pediatrics.
Use Teturam during pregnancy
Teturam should not be administered to pregnant women and women who are breastfeeding.
It is required to exclude the possibility of pregnancy before starting a therapeutic course. During the period of treatment, it is necessary to use reliable contraception.

In addition, it is not used for any dysfunction of the CVS, tuberculosis with bloody expectoration and other pulmonary diseases, including emphysema, tuberculosis and asthma.

Side effects Teturam
The medication is quite specific, therefore it has many side symptoms, especially in the case of prolonged use.
Mainly among them are disorders of the cardiovascular system and the NA, as well as the gastrointestinal tract; in addition, violations of hepatic activity may be observed.
During therapy with the use of a drug, an exacerbation of all latent and chronic pathologies occurs, and in addition, manifestations of allergies (itching, epidermal rashes and swelling) can be observed.
In some cases, hallucinations, psychosis and a state of delusion are noted. There may be a change in mental state.
Overdose
Common signs of an overdose include collapse, confusion, neurologic distress, and coma.
Complex procedures are performed with intramuscular, subcutaneous and intravenous administration of drugs, as well as inhalation and administration of B-vitamins.
Interactions with other drugs
During the period of therapy, it is necessary to abandon the use of drinks, which contain alcohol, as well as medications with the presence of ethyl alcohol.
It is impossible to combine Teturam with isoniazid, as this can provoke an acute behavioral disorder and impaired motor coordination.
It is forbidden to combine the medicine with hepatotoxic substances, as this can lead to liver intoxication.
Storage conditions
Teturas should be kept out of the reach of small children, moisture and sunlight. Temperature level - no more than 25 ° C.
Shelf life
Teturam can be used for a 4-year term from the date of manufacture of the pharmaceutical product.

Reviews
Teturam receives mixed reviews from patients who have taken it for alcoholism.
There are reports of the drug causing heartburn. If such a violation occurs, it is necessary to consult a doctor - in this case, the dosage form of the medication may be changed - injections instead of tablets. This will avoid irritation of the gastric mucosa.
There is also information about the development of very serious complications in the case of alcohol consumption during treatment.
The reviews note that in the absence of a strong desire to give up alcohol, the medicine will not be able to help. The patient will continue to drink during therapy, endangering his or her life, or will return to alcohol after the end of therapy.
At the same time, if the patient has a firm intention to cure alcoholism, pills will be very useful to eliminate psychological dependence. Due to the fact that alcohol will begin to cause a more negative reaction of the body, it will be easier to refuse it.
It is also noted that the substances of disulfiram are more effective when used in combination with psychological methods of therapy for alcoholism.
