Alomid is a medication used in ophthalmology. It has anti-allergic and anti-edema properties. Contains the component lodoxamide.

Lodoxamide stabilizes the mast cell walls, and at the same time has the ability to suppress the immediate manifestations of intolerance, which was found during extensive in vivo testing with the participation of humans and animals. The substance helps to strengthen the strength of superficial vessels, preventing the effect that reagin or reactions caused by the activity of antigens and IgE have on them. [1]

Indications Alomid

It is used for non-infectious forms of allergic conjunctivitis:

  • keratoconjunctivitis or vernal conjunctivitis ;
  • giant conjunctivitis of the papillary type;
  • spring form of keratitis;
  • atopic conjunctivitis of allergic origin.

Lodoxamide has a therapeutic effect in the treatment of other eye diseases, during which the main irritant of inflammation is the immediate symptoms of intolerance (mast cell reaction).

Release form

The release of the drug substance is realized in the form of eye drops - inside dropper bottles of the "Drop-Teiner" type, having a volume of 5 ml.

Pharmacodynamics

In vitro tests have shown that lodoxamide can stabilize mast cells in rodents as well as prevent antigen-induced histamine release. At the same time, the substance prevents the release of other conductors of inflammation through mast cells (among them PRS-A, anaphylactic substances with a slow type of reaction, also called leukotrienes peptides) and inhibits eosinophilic chemotaxis.

The drug prevents histamine release in vitro, preventing calcium ions from entering the mast cells after stimulation with antigen. [2]

Alomid does not suppress the activity of COX and does not have antihistamine, vasoconstrictor and other anti-inflammatory effects.

Long-term use of drugs (periods that last 0.5-2 years) did not cause the development of symptoms of tachyphylaxis.

Pharmacokinetics

When using the drug in a portion of 1 drop inside each eye 4 times a day for a period of 10 days, the plasma values of lodoxamide were not reached, which can be measured (the detection threshold is 2.5 ng / ml).

Dosing and administration

The medication is used for ophthalmic procedures. The dosage size is 1-2 drops into the area of the conjunctival sac of the infected eye, 4 times a day at regular intervals.

Weakening of the manifestations of the disease with the use of the medication (reduction of itching, photophobia, discomfort, sensation of a foreign object, lacrimation, conjunctival redness, edema / erythema, epithelial lesions, active eye pain, ptosis, eye discharge and limbic symptoms) usually occurs after a few days, but sometimes therapy can last up to 1 month. In the case of positive dynamics of signs, therapy should be continued until the effect is consolidated.

If necessary, Alomid can be used in combination with GCS.

In the case of instillation of the drug with conjunctivitis of an allergic nature, at first there may be discomfort, which weakens as the condition improves.

After instillation, it is necessary to tightly close the eyelids or produce nasolacrimal occlusion. This will reduce the overall absorption of the ophthalmic agent and reduce the risk of developing systemic negative signs.

  • Application for children

There is no information available regarding the therapeutic effects and safety of Alomid in children under 2 years of age.

Use Alomid during pregnancy

Appropriate testing of the use of the medication during pregnancy has not been performed. Animal tests have not shown any adverse effects on reproductive function, pregnancy, embryonic / fetal and postnatal development, or childbirth. It is necessary to prescribe the drug to pregnant women with great caution.

There is no information about whether the drug is excreted in breast milk.

Contraindications

It is contraindicated to prescribe in case of severe intolerance to lodoxamide or other elements of the drug.
