Omacor has a hypolipidemic effect.

Indications of the omakora

It is used in such situations:

  • for the prevention (secondary character) of the development of a previously diagnosed  myocardial infarction  (in combination with other necessary drugs for such cases: antiplatelet agents, ACE inhibitors, statins, and in addition β-blockers);
  • with endogenous hypertriglyceridemia - as an additional means of diet therapy, if the latter is ineffective: as monotherapy in the 4th type of pathology and together with statins in case of type 2b / 3 (with triglycerides still high).

Release form

Release of the medicine occurs in capsules, 28 or 100 pieces each inside the bottles of polyethylene.

Pharmacodynamics

Omacor is a lipid-lowering agent, the active elements of which are included in the category of ω-3-polyunsaturated fatty acids (EPA and DHA), and are indispensable within the body.

Due to the use of drugs, the triglyceride index decreases (as the VLDL level decreases), and besides, the binding of thromboxane A2 decreases and there is a slight prolongation of the time of blood-clotting. These effects are expressed in the form of an active effect on hemostasis and blood pressure level. There is no noticeable effect of drugs in relation to other factors of blood uptake.

As a result of suppression of esterification of elements of EPA and DHA, the binding of triglycerides inside the liver is delayed, which is why their indices decrease. This leads to an increase in peroxidic β-oxidation of the LC (the amount of free-type LC suitable for the triglyceride binding processes to be performed decreases). The suppression of these binding processes helps to reduce the VLDL values.

In individual people with hypertriglyceridemia, treatment with drugs causes an increase in LDL cholesterol. At the same time, the increase in HDL indices is insignificant and is much lower in comparison with therapy with the use of fibrates.

The duration of the hypolipidemic effect of the therapeutic agent in periods exceeding in duration of 1 year has not been studied. The characteristics of the tests do not provide convincing information on the reduction in the likelihood of developing IHD as a result of a decrease in the level of triglycerides.

The data of the conducted clinical tests showed that the daily oral intake of the 1st g of drugs during the period of 3.5 years causes a significant reduction in the combined negative value, which includes myocardial infarction with stroke, and in addition the cumulative mortality of patients due to all factors.

At the time, and also after the absorption of ω-3 fatty acids inside the small intestine, three main ways of their metabolic transformation are noted:

  • the initial passage of LC into the liver, where they enter into a variety of lipoprotein categories, and then redirecting to a group of peripheral lipid deposits;
  • replacement of the inside of the cell walls of phospholipids with lipoprotein phospholipids, and then the functioning of the LC in the form of precursors of different eicosanoids;
  • oxidation of a large number of LCs to make up for lost energy.

The index of the category ω-3-LC (EPA and DHA) inside plasma phospholipids is similar to their values recorded inside the cell walls.

Dosing and administration

Omacor is used orally, during meals.

In the secondary form of prophylaxis of a previously diagnosed myocardial infarction, it is necessary to take one capsule of medicine per day during the period of the doctor's appointed time interval (its duration depends on the individual situation of the patient).

When treating hypertriglyceridemia, you need to take 2 medicinal capsules per day (there is also the possibility of increasing the daily portion in half - up to 4 capsules). The duration of such therapy is selected by the treating doctor.

Use of the omakora during pregnancy

Apply Omacore in lactation or pregnancy - is prohibited.

Contraindications

The main contraindications:

  • presence of strong intolerance with respect to ω-3-triglycerides;
  • external hypertriglyceridemia (the first type of hyperchylomicronemia).

Caution is required in case of use in such violations:

  • pronounced forms of disorders of hepatic activity;
  • combined use with fibrates and anticoagulants for oral administration;
  • performing operations and eliminating complex injuries (because of the possibility of increasing the duration of bleeding);
  • elderly people (over 70 years old).

Side effects of the omakora

Use of the drug occasionally leads to the appearance of the following side symptoms:

  • dyspeptic disorders, gastroenteritis, abdominal pain, gastritis, dysgeusia, nausea, and in addition to the disorder of the function of the digestive tract and problems with the work of the liver;
  • decrease in blood pressure, the appearance of headaches or dizziness;
  • dry nasal mucosa, acne, symptoms of individual hypersensitivity, hives and itching rash;
  • hyperglycemia;
  • the appearance of bleeding inside the gastrointestinal tract.

In the course of tests, the following violations were observed:

  • increase in the level of blood leukocytes and LDH;
  • a moderate increase in the values of transaminases (such as ALT, as well as AST);
  • an increase in the body's need for insulin;
  • increased activity of hepatic enzymes;
  • rosacea, eruptions on the epidermis, erythema or redness, and in addition the development of urticaria on shoulder areas with neck and sternum;
  • pain in the musculature;
  • increased values of CK within the blood;
  • weight gain.

Overdose

If the patient has taken too large a dose of the drug, he may experience reactions described in the category of "side effects", or exacerbate the already existing negative effects.

To remove abnormalities, appropriate symptomatic measures should be taken.

Interactions with other drugs

It is forbidden to combine the drug with fibrates.

The combination of the drug with warfarin does not cause the appearance of various hemorrhagic negative symptoms. But with such therapy or after the abolition of Omakor's use, it is required to control the values of PTV.

Combined use with anticoagulants taken orally increases the likelihood of bleeding, and also prolongs their duration.

Reviews

Omakor receives extremely opposite feedback from patients who used this medication. There are both completely positive opinions in which there is a good efficacy of drugs and the safety of its use, and negative, where it is noted that the medication was completely useless in the treatment of the corresponding disorders.
