Vikasol is a water-soluble analogue of vitamin K, which is obtained synthetically.

Menadione bisulfite Na is a participant in the processes of prothrombin formation and helps improve blood clotting. In case of vitamin K deficiency in the body, hemorrhagic symptoms occur. [ 1 ]

After an intramuscular injection, the therapeutic effect of the drug begins after 8 hours. This is due to the body's natural processes, because it is not able to absorb vitamin K faster. [ 2 ]

Indications Vikasol

It is used in the following cases:

  • jaundice, which develops due to deterioration of the process of bile outflow;
  • active forms of hepatitis;
  • bleeding of capillary or parenchymatous type;
  • the period of preparation for surgery (to prevent bleeding);
  • radiation sickness;
  • bleeding that develops due to ulcers in the gastrointestinal tract;
  • hemorrhagic disease of the newborn;
  • bleeding that occurs with pulmonary tuberculosis or septic pathologies;
  • thrombopenic type purpura;
  • systematic nasal and hemorrhoidal bleeding;
  • prolonged premenopausal, uterine or juvenile bleeding;
  • when using anticoagulants.

It is also prescribed to women in labor to prevent bleeding.

Release form

The medicinal substance is released in the form of a liquid for intramuscular injections (inside 1 ml ampoules), as well as in the form of 0.015 g tablets taken orally.

Pharmacodynamics

The drug increases blood clotting, potentiating the processes of proconvertin stabilization and binding of the 2nd, 7th, 9th and 10th hemocoagulation factors inside the liver. [ 3 ]

Pharmacokinetics

In the blood plasma, the drug is in synthesis with various protein fractions. Most of the drug accumulates in the liver, heart muscle and spleen (more than 60% of the substance is in the mitochondrial fraction and only 15% is in the supernatant).

All natural and artificial variants of vitamin K are transformed into vitamin K2 (2-methyl-3-farnesylgeranyl) within the body. These transformations are most intense within the skeletal and myocardial muscles; within the kidneys – more weakly.

The metabolic components of vitamin K (phosphate with monosulfate, as well as diglucuronide-2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone) are excreted in the urine (about 70% of the applied portion).

Dosing and administration

The medicine can only be used with a doctor's prescription.

An adult should take 0.015 or 0.03 g of the substance orally per day; intramuscular injections are given in a dosage of 0.01 or 0.015 g. The maximum single dose is 0.03 g, and the daily dose is 0.06 g. When administered intramuscularly, no more than 0.015 g can be administered once, and 0.03 g per day.

Infants under 1 year of age are prescribed 0.002 or 0.005 g of the drug; children under 3 years of age – 0.006 g. For children 3-4 years of age, the dosage is 0.008 g; 5-9 years of age – 0.01 g; adolescents 10-14 years of age are administered 0.015 g of the drug per day.

The daily dose can be divided into 2-3 administrations. The therapy lasts 3-4 days. If necessary, the course can be repeated after a 4-day interval.

Before the operation, Vikasol should be used for 2-3 days.

Before giving birth, the woman in labor should take the daily dose of the drug once. But if labor has not started, the drug is administered again after 12 hours, and then 24 hours.

Use Vikasol during pregnancy

Menadione sodium bisulfite can only be used in the 3rd trimester to prevent bleeding during childbirth.

Contraindications

Contraindicated for use in cases of thromboembolism or increased blood clotting.

The drug is ineffective in the treatment of Werlhof's disease and hemophilia.

Side effects Vikasol

Occasionally, hypervitaminosis type K develops, the symptoms of which are hyperthrombinemia, -prothrombinemia, and -bilirubinemia. In children, acute intoxication may occasionally occur, which causes convulsions.

Overdose

Drug poisoning can potentiate the severity of side effects.

Interactions with other drugs

The drug weakens the therapeutic effect of anticoagulants, which is why such a combination is prohibited (it only does not affect the anticoagulant properties of heparin).

When combining Vikasol with antibiotics, it is necessary to increase the amount of the substance taken.

Storage conditions

Vikasol must be stored in dark places at a standard temperature for medications.

Shelf life

Vikasol can be used for a period of 36 months from the date of manufacture of the drug.
