Pharmacodynamics

An anthelmintic substance with a wide range of therapeutic activity. It demonstrates an effective effect in ascariasis with enterobiasis, as well as trichuriasis. It mainly affects energetic parasitic processes. It leads to a disorder of glucose consumption and ATP binding processes, and at the same time depletes glycogen reserves. It selectively slows down the binding of β-tubulin of helminth muscle cells, which causes their paralysis and a disorder of the transport systems.

It has a detrimental effect on hookworm eggs and roundworms. Large doses of the drug are used for echinococcosis or trichinosis (extraintestinal helminths). The drug is well tolerated.

Pharmacokinetics

The substance is practically not absorbed inside the intestine. Synthesis with blood protein is 90%.

Half-life is within 2.5-5 hours. The drug accumulates inside the fatty tissue with the liver, as well as inside the helminth larvae. Metabolic processes occur inside the liver. Approximately 5-10% of the drug is absorbed and then excreted through the kidneys. More than 90% of the drug is excreted with feces.

Dosing and administration

The medicine must be taken orally, after eating.

In case of diagnosed enterobiasis, an adult should take 0.1 g of the drug once. In parallel, it is necessary to treat everyone living in the house. If there is a high risk of re-invasion, it is necessary to take a similar portion again after 14 days.

For teniasis, ascariasis, trichuriasis, ancylostomiasis, and also anguillulosis or helminthiasis of a mixed nature, take 0.1 g of the medicine twice a day (over a 3-day period).

For trichinosis, take 0.2-0.4 g of the preparation 3 times a day for 3 days in a row. Starting from the 4th day, increase the dose to 0.4-0.5 g 3 times a day. This dosage is taken until the 10th day.

It is necessary to take into account that within 24 hours after taking Vermox it is forbidden to eat fatty foods, drink alcoholic beverages and use laxatives. After completing the therapy, it is necessary to submit feces and smears for analysis for a 7-day period to check for the presence of helminths or their eggs. During long-term therapy, it is necessary to monitor the functioning of the kidneys and liver, as well as take a blood test.

Application for children

Vermox should not be given to infants under 2 years of age.

Most often, children are infected with enterobiasis, and in addition to this, ascariasis or giardiasis. The peaks of these diseases are often noted in 2-3-, 4-7- and 10-14-year-old children (due to enzyme deficiency, acid-base imbalances in the gastrointestinal tract, as well as its motility and healthy microflora). The time after a child has suffered an intestinal infection, and in addition after treatment with antibiotics, is considered more vulnerable to invasions.

In the case of treating ascariasis, the drug efficiency is 100%. The drug is prescribed to a child in the following doses: 2-10 year olds take 0.05 g per day, dividing the dosage into 3 doses; over 10 years old – 100 mg per day in 3 doses. Therapy lasts 3 days.

During enterobiasis (pinworm infestation), therapy lasts 1 day: a 2-5-year-old child should take a quarter of a tablet once; 5-10-year-olds – 0.5 tablet; children over 10 years old – 1 tablet. It is necessary to take the medicine again in the same portion after 14 days. In addition, the linen of all residents of the house should be washed at a high temperature (90 o C).

It is important to remember that the medication increases the functional activity of helminths, which sometimes causes vomiting, antiperistalsis, and the release of roundworms into the respiratory tract. In this regard, in case of intensive forms of invasion, it should be used with caution in children.

Reviews

Vermox copes well with the treatment of enterobiasis and ascariasis in both adults and children. Parasitologists confirm this fact in their comments. With such invasions, 100% deworming is noted. In the case of scabies, it is 91%, with teniasis - 80%, anguillulosis - 67%. Doctors believe that this drug is more effective than Pirantel in the treatment of enterobiasis, but at the same time it is much more toxic. Because of this, it is prohibited to use it as a preventive (especially for children).

Parental reviews regarding the use of drugs in children are often positive. It is noted that with therapy, improvement occurs quickly: elimination of abdominal pain, complete disappearance of allergy symptoms and stabilization of gastrointestinal function.

Negative comments usually highlight the presence of negative symptoms, although they develop rarely: pain in the abdominal area and stool disturbance. It should also be remembered that children are prescribed medication by a doctor after examination. In addition, therapy requires the use of enterosorbents and timely bowel movements.
