Psoriasis is a chronic illness that manifests itself during periods of weakening of the body or in times of stress. In the absence of proper therapy, the course of the disease worsens, as a result of which a person can not live a full life, and the end result of this can even be disability. Folic acid in psoriasis is one of the most important components of the fight against exacerbations of the disease.
Indications of the folic acid in psoriasis
B group vitamins and folic acid are effective in psoriasis. They are indicated in the treatment of this disease, since they stimulate the processes of erythrocyte synthesis, and at the same time eliminate inflammation and itching, and also stabilize the healing process of the skin.
Pharmacodynamics
Folic acid takes an active part in the processes of recovery and oxidation occurring in the body. The metabolism process converts the active substance into tetrahydrofolate, which is necessary for the emergence of megaloblasts, as well as their subsequent transformation into normoblasts. Due to the lack of this substance, a megaloblastic hematopoietic type develops in man. This component is an active participant in the process of the exchange of pyrimidines with purines, and besides it has an active effect on the metabolism of individual amino acids (such as methionine, glycine, and histidine) and in the synthesis of nucleic acids.
The drug has a positive effect on the functioning of the liver with the intestine and the immune system - it is often where there are problems with the development of psoriasis.
An important property of folic acid is also the normalization of the hematopoietic process. It provides the production of red blood cells, as well as saturates the problem cells with iron and oxygen.
Pharmacokinetics
After oral administration, folic acid combines in the stomach with the Castle factor (this is a specific glycoprotein) and is then absorbed through the upper part of the 12-colon. Binding to plasma proteins is almost complete.
Under the influence of the dihydrofolate reductase enzyme, the vitamin is activated in the liver and converted into tetrahydrofolate. The peak concentration in the blood substance reaches 0.5-1 hour later. The excretion of folic acid occurs through the kidneys (either unchanged, or in the form of decay products).
Dosing and administration
Patients with psoriasis require a significant increase in the level of ingested vitamin B9. Medicines should be taken by courses, only in the concentration prescribed by the attending physician. The average daily dosage is 3000-5000 meq. When using a substance to prevent disease during remission, the daily dosage is usually 700-800 mgk. For 1 month, it should be reduced to 400 μg. Tablets are the most convenient for use as a vitamin dosage form. The first tablet contains 1000 or 5000 mg of active substance.
It is important to use tablets correctly, and also to know which diet should be followed in psoriasis:
- Tablets should be drunk during meals, because with the active functioning of the digestive tract, their digestibility is significantly increased;
- for a day you need to drink at least 2.5-3 liters of water;
- should increase the content of greens with vegetables in their diet;
- breakfast is better porridge, which you can add dried apricots, raisins and other dried fruits.
Use of the folic acid in psoriasis during pregnancy
In the case of the development of psoriasis during pregnancy, it is allowed to use medicines containing folic acid - it helps to reduce the severity of the manifestations of the disease, and also has a calming effect.
Contraindications
Among the contraindications:
- individual intolerance;
- Anemia due to vitamin B12 deficiency;
- lack of sugar or isomaltase;
- presence of glucose-galactose malabsorption;
- hypersensitivity to fructose;
- children under 3 years old.
Assign with caution in the absence of cyanocobalamin in the body, as well as folic deficiency anemia.
Side effects of the folic acid in psoriasis
Adverse reactions are unique - basically it is an allergy to components of drugs. Symptoms include fever, bronchial spasms, skin rashes and erythema.

Overdose
In children, an overdose of vitamin B9 can cause anxiety, increased excitability, as well as hyperactive behavior. In addition, it can negatively affect the renal function.
With prolonged intake of vitamin B9 in therapeutic dosages, it is possible to develop hypovitaminosis. Among its manifestations is pain and redness of the tongue, and in addition, the deterioration of the body's resistance to various infections and the development of anemia.
Interactions with other drugs
Anticonvulsants (including carbamazepine along with phenytoin), oral contraceptives, as well as estrogens increase the body's need for folic acid.
Antacid drugs (among them magnesium, calcium, and aluminum), sulfonamides (among them sulfasalazine) and colestyramine reduce the rate of absorption of folic acid.
Triamterene, methotrexate, as well as pyrimethamine with trimethoprim are inhibitors of dihydrofolate reductase, which weakens the effect of folic acid on the body.
Shelf life
Folic acid can be used within 3 years from the date of manufacture of the drug.

Reviews
Folic acid in psoriasis has a good reputation in patients - they respond positively to the drug, noting a significant improvement in the skin condition, as well as well-being. But at the same time it should be taken into account that a positive effect is possible only in case of complex treatment, the constituent element of which is vitamin-monotherapy will not give the desired result.
