Celandine is a very effective medicinal plant and has many healing properties. It is often used to eliminate psoriasis, which is a very common skin disease. Celandine for psoriasis is recommended to be used even before the first spots appear on the skin - this will prevent the occurrence of plaques and rashes even during an exacerbation of psoriasis. But basically, treatment still begins after the first noticeable signs of the disease appear.

Indications celandine for psoriasis

Pharmacodynamics

The roots of the plant are used as a remedy, as well as its stems and sometimes grass. It is necessary to remember that celandine is a poisonous plant - its juice contains 20 alkaloids (among them chelidonine, which helps to stabilize the heartbeat with pressure, and also removes muscle pain, homochelidonine, which has stimulating properties, protopine, which improves muscle tone, and chelerythrine, which has an irritating effect). In addition to alkaloids, it contains many acids with vitamins and other useful substances:

  • essential oil;
  • vitamins from groups C and A;
  • citric, oxysuccinic, chelidonic, and also butanedioic acid;
  • flavonoids together with carotene and saponins.

Celandine has such important beneficial properties as anti-inflammatory and choleretic, as well as antispasmodic and bactericidal.

Dosing and administration

Celandine is mainly used locally for psoriasis. There are several ways to prepare a medicinal product from this plant:

Juice, which, when fresh, has an orange tint. It must be used very carefully - treat the affected areas, rubbing into the skin, and then dry for 5 minutes. Since the juice irritates the skin, causing redness similar in appearance to a burn, it should be washed off completely immediately after the procedure.

A bath with celandine - its advantage is that in this case the therapeutic effect will spread immediately throughout the body. But at the same time, due to the fact that the concentration of the drug in this treatment option is quite small, and the period of action is quite short, this method is less effective in comparison with local application. With psoriasis, you can take both warm and hot baths.

For a hot bath, you need to heat the water to 37-45°C, and the procedure itself should last a maximum of 10 minutes. You need to take 1 glass of chopped celandine per 4 liters of water. You need to boil the water and let it brew for 1 hour. This amount of decoction is calculated for approximately 30-40 liters of water in the bath. It is recommended to carry out such procedures daily for 5-7 days.

With a warm bath, the temperature should be a maximum of 36°C - this method allows you to calm the nervous system, so the procedure is easier to tolerate. In this case, you can use either the same decoction as for a hot bath, or a decoction from a mixture of such ingredients - 2 tablespoons of calendula, string, and valerian root, 1 spoon of celandine, 4 spoons of clover flowers, and 3 spoons of St. John's wort. The course duration is 10 procedures.

An ointment that can be made in several ways.

The simplest method includes a mixture of celandine and baby cream or Vaseline in a 1:2 ratio. Often, ointment with solidol (100 g) is also used, as well as Flucinar ointment and celandine (2 teaspoons). Flucinar contains fluocinolone acetonide, which is a powerful GCS that easily passes into the bloodstream.

There is also an ointment with safer ingredients - 1 part of walnut leaves and fish oil, as well as 2 parts of chopped celandine. Tar and honey are used as a base, which should be taken in 3 parts.

Compresses, the advantage of which is a long-term effect on the skin. But it is necessary to take into account that this can provoke an allergic reaction. The following mixtures are used for compresses:

  • tar with celandine, as well as horse sorrel root;
  • honey with celandine and birch mushroom;
  • celandine with cut grass and honey.

For oral administration, you can use canned celandine juice. You need to wash the herb and grind it through a meat grinder. Then you need to squeeze it out and add alcohol to the resulting juice in a ratio of 50 mg per 1 teaspoon of juice (this is required to preserve the medicinal properties of the medicine for a long time). When using, you need to add juice drop by drop to 100 mg of water - 1 drop on the first treatment day, 2 drops on the 2nd, etc. This course lasts 20 days, then you need to take a break of 10 days, and continue treatment with the same duration of the course.

Celandine oil for psoriasis

The oil combines the medicinal properties of celandine, and also, depending on the chosen base, a restorative, softening, moisturizing or anti-inflammatory effect. In addition, the advantage of this product is that it acts very gently, leaving no burns on the skin. Any vegetable oil can be used as a base, but sea buckthorn or olive oil is best. The oil should be infused in a water bath for 1 hour so that it pasteurizes, and then mixed with dry celandine grass and left to infuse in a dark place for 1 week. The resulting mixture should be used to lubricate psoriatic plaques.

Side effects celandine for psoriasis

The substance chelidonine resembles morphine in its properties. It is not very toxic, but can provoke a state of prostration. Another component of celandine, chelerythrine, can provoke diarrhea and vomiting, and in addition, the appearance of irritation on the skin. It can also slow down reflexes and have a paralyzing effect on the nervous system.

In addition, side effects such as anxiety or fatigue, drowsiness or, conversely, insomnia may be observed. Dizziness, dry mouth, and a mild form of leukopenia are also possible. All these symptoms usually disappear after 3-5 days and do not require discontinuing treatment.

Overdose

Celandine must be handled with great care, because some of the alkaloids in its composition can be fatal in case of overdose.

Long-term use of the drug in high doses can cause the development of such complications:

  • development of a hepatotoxic reaction due to the destruction of hepatocytes by celandine alkaloids;
  • in case of intolerance to any of the components contained in celandine, contact dermatitis may develop;
  • indigestion - when taken orally, it may cause spasms in the intestines or stomach, as well as the development of flatulence, diarrhea or nausea.

Interactions with other drugs

It is forbidden to combine celandine with drugs or plants that contain opiates (including sulfanilamide drugs, foxglove extract, and blood glucose lowering agents). It is also forbidden to combine it with cardiac drugs used to eliminate arrhythmia (this especially applies to digoxin).
