Tetracycline eye ointment 1% - ophthalmological medicine, tetracycline antibiotic with bacteriostatic type of activity. Leads to disruption of formation of complex between ribosome and transport RNA, as a result of which protein binding is disrupted.

The drug has a wide range of therapeutic effects. It inhibits protein binding inside bacterial cells, thereby developing a bacteriostatic effect. The drug demonstrates pronounced activity against gram-negative and -positive microbes. [ 1 ]

Indications Tetracycline ointment eye ointment 1%

It is used for ophthalmological pathologies of infectious origin: keratitis with trachoma, conjunctivitis or blepharitis.

Release form

The drug is released in the form of an eye ointment - inside tubes of 3 or 10 g; inside a pack - 1 tube.

Pharmacodynamics

The drug has a powerful effect on gram-negative and -positive microbes. Among them are pneumococci, epidermal and pyogenic streptococci, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae with gonococci, intestinal and hemophilic bacilli, Ducrey's bacilli, Francisella tularensis, plague bacilli, anthrax bacilli and Chlamydia trachomatis.

It has no effect on individual strains of Haemophilus influenzae, Serratia marcescens, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Aerobacteria spp. [ 2 ]

Dosing and administration

The medication is applied by placing the ointment behind the lower eyelid (the procedure is performed 3-5 times per day).

The duration of therapy is selected by the doctor, taking into account the severity of the pathology: in the case of trachoma - 1-2+ months (a combination with systemic drugs can be used).

Not for use by persons under 8 years of age.

Use Tetracycline ointment eye ointment 1% during pregnancy

There is not enough information regarding the safety and medicinal efficacy of the drug when used in pregnant women or during breastfeeding, which is why it is not prescribed to this category of patients.

Contraindications

Contraindicated for use in case of local signs of severe intolerance to the components of the drug.

Side effects Tetracycline ointment eye ointment 1%

Swelling, hyperemia or itching may occur in the treatment area. People with personal intolerance may experience general allergy symptoms (epidermal rash or Quincke's edema). In such disorders, the use of the ointment is discontinued.

After the application, the patient may experience a transient decrease in visual acuity.

Interactions with other drugs

To enhance therapeutic effectiveness, the drug can be combined with oleandomycin, erythromycin or nitrofuran subgroup substances.

Storage conditions

Tetracycline eye ointment 1% should be stored in a dark place, closed to small children. Temperature level – no more than 15°С.

Shelf life

Tetracycline eye ointment 1% can be used for a 3-year period from the date of sale of the pharmaceutical product.
