Pharmacokinetics

Sodium iodide has antiseptic properties, participates in the enzymatic breakdown of proteins, and stimulates the production of sputum at a reflex level. With an increased radioactive background, taking the drug allows you to protect the thyroid gland from the harmful effects of radiation and prevent the accumulation of radioactive iodine.

The half-life is approximately 10 minutes. It accumulates mainly in the thyroid gland, and is excreted by the kidneys and feces within 24 hours (the figures may vary depending on the patient's age, gender, and functional state of the thyroid gland).

Dosing and administration

Sodium iodide is taken in a course determined by the attending physician, taking into account the disease and the patient's condition.

The drug is usually taken as a solution (in severe cases, sodium iodide is administered intravenously). From 0.9 to 4 g of the substance is prescribed per day; it is recommended to divide the daily dose into several doses.

The dissolved powder should be washed down with drinks that protect the gastric mucosa (jelly, milk).

When administered intravenously, the drug is administered once every few days; the course of treatment is 8-12 injections.
