Pharmacodynamics

Sodium Fluoride promotes the process of mineralization of teeth, and at the same time helps to form tooth enamel. The medicine has bactericidal properties and prevents the development of caries.

The use of the drug helps to reduce the resorption processes inside bone tissues. And when combined with calcium, as well as cholecalciferol, it promotes bone calcification.

Pharmacokinetics

The active ingredient is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. But it should be taken into account that calcium/magnesium salts, as well as aluminum, weaken the absorption of the drug. Peak plasma values are noted after 4 hours after oral administration of the drug.

Fluorides accumulate inside the body, mainly inside bones and teeth, as well as nails and hair.

Excretion occurs primarily in urine. In addition, the drug is excreted in saliva and feces.

Side effects Sodium fluoride

The drug is generally tolerated by patients without complications. Occasionally, some side effects are observed: vomiting, fluorosis, diarrhea, and nausea. However, allergy symptoms may be observed - rashes, eosinophilia, and runny nose.

Overdose

The lethal dose of the drug for an adult is a single dose of 5-10 g. However, quite severe consequences can be expected in the case of taking a dose of up to 1 g at a time.

Due to sodium fluoride poisoning, a high level of hydrofluoric acid is observed inside the body, which has an irritating effect on the gastrointestinal mucosa. Along with this, metabolic processes and electrolyte balance are disrupted. Hypocalcemia also develops.

The following adverse reactions may occur as a result of taking excessively high doses of the drug: dizziness, abdominal pain, and diarrhea with nausea. In addition, severe fatigue or excitability, increased temperature, tremor, respiratory failure, and respiratory arrest develop. A feeling of weakness or drowsiness, vomiting (normal and with blood), hypersalivation, tremors, stomach cramps, leg pain, loss of appetite, lacrimation, visual disturbances, and arthralgia may occur.

To eliminate intoxication, the patient's stomach should be washed using calcium chloride (1-5% solution) or calcium hydroxide (0.15% solution). In addition, the patient should be prescribed diuretics and saline laxatives. Aluminum hydroxide is used to reduce the degree of fluoride absorption. It is necessary to slowly administer a 10-20% solution of calcium gluconate intravenously. Along with this, the patient is prescribed hemodialysis and vitamins. Procedures aimed at eliminating the symptoms of disorders are also carried out.

In chronic poisoning, fluorosis is observed in the area of teeth and bones. There is an increase in the density of bone tissue, as well as calcification of ligaments with tendons. Such people experience darkening of the color of tooth enamel, limited mobility, and also deformation with pain in the area of joints.
