Sleeping pills have unfortunately taken a place of honor in the medicine cabinets of almost every family these days. The fast pace of modern life, the desire and need of people to do as much as possible, as well as the successes of the pharmaceutical industry contribute to the popularization of sleeping pills.

Physical, mental, psychological and emotional overload of the body and constant stress have an extremely negative effect on the nervous system, provoke disruptions in the alternation of biological rhythms, and lead to partial or complete lack of sleep.

  • sleep disorders;
  • difficulty falling asleep and waking up repeatedly;

  • neuroses;
  • irritability, increased excitability;
  • disruption of circadian rhythms;

Coated tablets of 0.5 g contain magnesium, extracts of motherwort, hops, hawthorn, and a complex of B vitamins.

  • Magnesium is the “element of calm”: it takes part in muscle and nervous activity, the transmission of impulses, activates vitamins and enzymatic processes.
  • Thanks to the phytocomponents, the sleeping tablets act as a sedative and cardiotonic agent, normalizing the functions of the nervous system.
  • Vitamins are irreplaceable in the processes of nervous activity, they participate in the construction of neuron membranes and the transmission of impulses. In combination, they have a more effective, including anti-stress, effect.

Donormil

Donormil tablets (synonym – doxylamine) are indicated for insomnia and other sleep problems. The drug has sedative and hypnotic properties, due to which it accelerates the process of falling asleep, prolongs the period and improves the quality of sleep. It acts for a time sufficient for falling asleep.

Donormil is available in two types of tablets: coated and effervescent, which must be dissolved in water before use. Take 0.5 or a whole tablet a quarter of an hour before going to bed. If the problem does not disappear after a few days of use, you should consult a doctor to change the daily dose or use another treatment.

Sleeping pills may cause drowsiness while awake, dry mouth, constipation, and urinary retention. They should not be prescribed to children under 15 years of age, nursing mothers (pregnant women should use caution); contraindications also include:

  • individual intolerance to ingredients,
  • hyperplasia and adenoma of the prostate,
  • glaucoma.

Donormil is incompatible with alcohol. When using the drug, it is not recommended to operate complex mechanisms (due to decreased reaction).

In pharmacies, the drug is dispensed by prescription. Overdose causes severe symptoms, including convulsions and epileptiform seizures, which require qualified treatment.

Melaxen

Melaxen is considered an effective and safe sleeping pill, so it is sold in pharmacies without prescriptions. It is an effective synthetic analogue of the natural hormone. Synonyms: metaton, melatonin, melapur.

The drug normalizes sleep, especially in primary insomnia in elderly patients, so it is recommended for people over 55 who suffer from insomnia with sleep quality disorders. Melaxen is useful for insomnia associated with shift work, flights to different time zones, and stressful situations. Side effects are rare (in particular, allergies).

Positive properties of Melaxen:

  • non-addictive;
  • does not impair memory;
  • does not cause drowsiness during the day;
  • does not disrupt sleep structure;
  • does not aggravate obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

Contraindications to the use of Melaxen:

  • hypersensitivity to components,
  • impairment of liver function,
  • autoimmune pathologies,
  • childhood,
  • work that requires quick reactions and concentration,
  • pregnancy and lactation.

An overdose of the drug causes drowsiness, dizziness, and impaired coordination of movements. Treatment is not required, the substance is eliminated from the body within 12 hours.

Melatonin

Melatonin is a synthetic substance created as an analogue of the natural hormone of the pineal gland. It is a powerful antioxidant, protects against the formation of free radicals that provoke aging and cancer.

The substance is also called the sleep hormone. It is produced in the form of sleeping pills for internal use.

Melatonin has the following effects:

  • adaptogenic,
  • sleeping pills,
  • sedative,
  • immunostimulating,
  • antioxidant.

Melatonin regulates the body's circadian rhythm, ensures timely falling asleep, good sleep and normal awakening.

Melatonin is useful for disrupting time adaptations when changing time zones, improves well-being after sleep, and reduces reactions to stress.

The dosage and frequency of administration are determined based on the patient's specific indications, usually once a day, before bedtime. Sleeping tablets should be taken whole, with plenty of water.

The positive quality of melatonin is that it does not cause addiction or withdrawal syndrome, and does not have serious side effects. Due to this, it is allowed to be sold without a prescription. However, some contraindications for use still exist, for example:

  • autoimmune and allergic diseases,
  • chronic renal failure,
  • tumors,
  • diabetes mellitus,
  • epilepsy.

Melatonin should not be given to children under 12 years of age, pregnant or nursing mothers, or people working with machinery or other mechanisms that require increased attention.

Melanin

Melanin is a natural pigment, the amount of which in the body determines the intensity of the color of the skin, hair, and hair. When there is a lack of the substance, such a pathology as albinism is observed.

Melanin is constantly synthesized in the epidermis. Under the influence of ultraviolet rays, the process is activated and leads to the formation of a tan - protection of the skin from excessive ultraviolet radiation.

The pigment is produced by special cells – melanocytes. If there is a shortage of them, melanin from the outside is required to protect the skin. This is what melanin in tablets is for.

Melanin tablets are used for both cosmetic and medicinal purposes.

  • In the cosmetic sense, melanin is used to create a tan. The basis of the tablets is dihydroxyacetone, which stimulates the production of melanin in the skin.
  • As a remedy, it is used for decreased pigmentation and skin cancer. The big positive of such protection is that the tablets, unlike ultraviolet light, do not cause burns on the skin.

Melanin tablets are also produced based on biologically active substances. They also stimulate the production of melanin.

It is also known that melanin tablets not only promote tanning without a solarium, but also have additional beneficial properties. For example, they stimulate the libido of both sexes and increase the burning of excess fat.

Peaceful sleep

Tablets "Calm sleep" Geron-vit are developed taking into account the changes occurring in the aging body. The tablets for sleep contain a complex of herbal ingredients, vitamins, minerals. Motherwort, blueweed, lemon balm, hawthorn, sweet clover, St. John's wort, eleutherococcus, melatonin, biotin, vitamins C, B - the combination of these substances alleviates the symptoms of menopause, depression, restores memory, sleep, attention, physical strength.

"Calm sleep" is recommended for the prevention of depressive moods, support of the body during stress, in particular, in the following pathologies:

  • neuroses from stress;
  • sleep disorders;
  • depressions;
  • chronic fatigue;
  • emotional disturbances;

According to research by scientists, the combination of medicinal plants with minerals and vitamins has a beneficial effect on the functions of the elderly body: the complex preserves and protects nerve cells, maintains vigor and cheerfulness, prevents memory loss, Alzheimer's disease and similar diseases.

The duration of the treatment and prophylactic course and daily doses are determined by the doctor.

Sleep hormone

Melatonin is called a sleep hormone. It regulates the sleep-wake cycle, treats insomnia, improves mental and emotional state, eliminates stress, normalizes blood pressure, slows down the aging process, prolongs life, and improves immunity.

Melatonin relieves some types of headaches, has antioxidant and antitumor properties. It is useful for people who are forced to change time zones while traveling.

It is possible to increase the hormone level naturally. To do this, you need to go to bed no later than midnight, sleep in a dark room and for a sufficient amount of time. After all, the substance in the body is formed at night, from midnight to four o'clock.

If there is a deficiency of the substance itself, it should be taken additionally, in the form of sleeping pills. Taking pills

  • improves sleep,
  • relieves stress,
  • slows down aging,
  • increases defenses,
  • regulates blood pressure and brain activity,
  • reduces cholesterol levels,
  • relieves pain in the head area.

There are no adverse effects from the use of the sleep hormone. As usual, those at risk include pregnant women, nursing mothers, and patients with serious illnesses. However, other people should not take sleeping pills without consulting a doctor.

  • to relieve alcohol withdrawal;
  • as a hypnotic during surgical procedures.

The substance may provoke adverse reactions: ataxia, dizziness, drowsiness, muscle weakness. Contraindicated for use in patients with severe myasthenia, functional changes in the liver and kidneys, and pregnant women.

It is recommended to use phenazepam with caution in elderly and weakened people. Particular caution is needed when treating people with severe forms of depression: the drug can be used by them for suicide.

Long-term use of phenazepam in large quantities causes pharmacological dependence.

Sleep normalizing pills

Sleep problems can overtake a person at any age, starting from childhood. During life, each person encounters many unfavorable situations that negatively affect sleep. Age-related changes in the body, as a rule, worsen insomnia.

Pharmacists offer sleep-normalizing pills for every age category.

  • For children: Persen, Dormiplant, Novo-Passit.

It is better not to prescribe medications for sleep to children at all. Their use is allowed only in exceptional cases, with serious indications (and not earlier than three years).

  • For adults: Novo-Passit, Persen, Motherwort, Afobazole, Melatonin, Rozerem, Zopiclone, Phenibut, Imovan.

Synthetic and combined drugs should be used only at night, as they promote deep and long sleep. And in the morning it is not recommended to get behind the wheel of a car or perform other complex manipulations.

  • For the elderly: zopiclone, zolpidem.

This category of patients should select sleeping pills taking into account the specific disease. Transient insomnia is treated with herbal remedies, severe insomnia - with drugs that leave the body within a few hours.

Zopiclone and zolpidem are considered universal drugs because they help to fall asleep easily and provide sleep similar to natural sleep. Older people tolerate these drugs quite well, without feeling lethargic and daytime sleepiness.

Herbal Sleeping Pills

Pharmaceutical sleep medications differ in composition, impact on the human body and, of course, cost. The most delicate products are based on plant ingredients. These are phytocomplexes and dietary supplements.

Herbal sleep pills:

  • Ortho-Taurine

Normalizes sleep, improves alertness and mood, relieves nervousness and groundless anxiety. Take a course lasting from two to several weeks.

  • Neurostabil

Contains herbs and B vitamins, used for the prevention and treatment of partial sleep deprivation.

  • Biolan

A complex of amino acids and peptides, relieves stress and insomnia. At the same time, it improves blood circulation in the brain and performance. An expensive but completely harmless drug.

  • Balansin

A multivitamin product, the recipe contains, among other things, ginkgo biloba extract. Supports the body during psycho-emotional overload, enriches the body with useful substances. Recommended for insomnia, typical for high-level managers.

Herbal sleeping tablets also include Novo-Passit, Afobazol, Persen, and Motherwort in tablets.

Valerian for sleep

Valerian is a well-known medicinal plant. Based on the plant's rhizomes, tinctures are produced; dry, thick, oil extracts; decoctions and infusions; briquettes; powder; filter bags. All medicinal forms, when taken regularly, have a hypnotic, sedative, and antispasmodic effect on the patient.

Valerian for sleep in coated tablets is based on a dry extract of the plant. Valerian is not suitable for relieving symptoms of acute agitation and insomnia, because the sedative effect appears gradually, with systematic use (from two weeks to a month).

The tablets contain different amounts of the active substance:

  • "Valerian-Belmed" - 200 mg of rhizome powder;
  • "Valerian forte" - 150 mg of thick extract;
  • “Valerian extract” – 20 mg each and
  • "Valerian" (Bulgaria) - 3 mg dry extract.

The dosage of the drug depends on these indicators. Valerian is well tolerated by patients, so cases of overdose are rarely recorded. However, long-term use can cause undesirable consequences.

Valerian is also included in combination preparations that are useful for insomnia, agitation, anxiety, and neurotic conditions. Popular herbal remedies include Persen and Sanasone, camphor-valerian and lily-of-the-valerian drops, and herbal infusions.

Sleeping pills for planes

For sleeping on an airplane, drugs with adaptogenic properties are used, which are capable of normalizing disturbed biological rhythms. The most popular pills for sleeping on an airplane are Melaxen and its analogues: Circalin, Melaxen Balance.

The active ingredient, melatonin, is an artificially synthesized analogue of the pineal gland hormone. It regulates daily processes, maintains quality sleep and a good mood in the morning, and does not cause a feeling of lethargy. Even dreams become brighter and more emotional when taking Melaxen.

An important property of melaxen and its analogues is the increase in the adaptive capabilities of the body during rapid changes in time zones. This is a real test that a person undergoes during long flights.

Melaxen preparations stimulate the immune system and reduce stress reactions, which in turn has a positive effect on the general condition of the body, mood and performance of a person.

  • When taking Melaxen as sleeping tablets on an airplane, it is recommended to take 1 tablet 30-40 minutes before bedtime the day before the flight and several days after (no more than two tablets per day).

Contraindications: pregnancy and lactation, kidney disease, allergies, tumors, epilepsy, diabetes. Melaxen is an over-the-counter drug.

Pharmacodynamics

Most sleeping pills are quickly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and easily pass through the body's barriers.

Individual components have their own characteristics.

Detailed information about active substances is included in the leaflets included with the drugs.

trusted-source[ 11 ], [ 12 ], [ 13 ], [ 14 ], [ 15 ], [ 16 ]

Pharmacokinetics

Most sleeping pills are metabolized in the liver (donormil, melaxen, sonex), and their metabolites are excreted in the urine through the kidneys (partially through the intestines).

A small portion leaves the body unchanged (for example, Sonex – 5%).

More information about pharmacokinetics can be found in the instructions for individual drugs.

Dosing and administration

Sleeping tablets are intended for oral administration. They are usually recommended to be swallowed whole with water. Doses and duration of treatment depend on the diagnosis, the patient's condition, and other factors.

For example, phenazepam is prescribed to adults outside the hospital 2-3 times a day, a total of 0.25-0.5 mg per day. In hospital conditions, the dose can be increased to 3-5 mg. For epilepsy, 2-10 mg per day is used. When stopping alcohol withdrawal, the maximum daily dose does not exceed 0.01 g.

Sleeping pills are usually taken before going to bed, one or two at a time.

Use sleep pills during pregnancy

Insomnia is a constant companion during pregnancy. In the early stages, it is associated with the following changes:

  • hormonal changes in the body,
  • emotional instability,
  • frequent urination,
  • increased nervousness (in particular, in case of unwanted pregnancy).

Sleep usually improves in the second trimester, but after the 32nd week, insomnia returns again. The reasons are the pressure of the enlarged uterus on the internal organs, including the bladder, as well as a feeling of heartburn. Sometimes there are several reasons, although even one is enough to suffer from insomnia at night and drowsiness during the day.

Doctors do not recommend using sleeping pills during pregnancy, as well as other medications. Even those that are considered "harmless". Moreover, self-medication is unacceptable during pregnancy.

Folk remedies can solve the problem, but it is also forbidden to use them without consulting a doctor. Sometimes such simple recipes as milk with honey, oregano and valerian tincture are enough to overcome insomnia.

An important role in normalizing sleep during pregnancy is played by the correct daily routine and nutrition of the woman, a calm atmosphere in the house, support from relatives and a friendly attitude towards her from all other people. As a rule, after a successful resolution of the burden, the sleep of the woman in labor returns to normal without the help of drugs.

Contraindications

Contraindications for the use of sleeping pills:

  • individual intolerance,
  • breastfeeding,
  • pregnancy,
  • childhood and adolescence,
  • diseases (chronic obstruction and other pulmonary diseases, severe muscle weakness, tumors, diabetes mellitus, etc.).

In addition to general contraindications, individual drugs have their own contraindications. They must be taken into account when prescribing to a specific patient.

Side effects sleep pills

Many sleeping pills have dangerous side effects. The manufacturer warns about this in the instructions, which should be read by both the doctor and the patient.

For example, phenazepam has a negative effect on the nervous system, hematopoiesis and digestion organs, and kidneys. Allergies and local reactions are possible when taking it. Withdrawal syndrome occurs when the dose is reduced or the drug is discontinued.

Melatonin slows down coordination, the speed of mental and physical reactions, provokes discomfort in the stomach, a feeling of heaviness in the head, and depression within 4–6 hours.

Overdose

Overdosing on sleeping pills can cause adverse effects of varying severity, from drowsiness that goes away after stopping taking them, to seizures and coma that require immediate medical attention.

For example, an excess dose of donormil causes anxiety, daytime sleepiness, tremors, skin hyperemia, fever, convulsions, and even coma.

An overdose of phenazepam causes drowsiness, decreased reflexes and consciousness, bradycardia, shortness of breath, decreased blood pressure, and coma.

To avoid risks, the doctor must approach treatment professionally, and the patient must be responsible for his health and the doctor’s advice.

trusted-source[ 23 ]

Interactions with other drugs

Side effects of donormil are enhanced by the combined use of M-anticholinergics. Combination with other sedatives causes potentiation of the depressant effect on the central nervous system organs.

Alcohol reduces the effectiveness of melaxen. Nicotine reduces plasma concentrations of the active substance.

Phenazepam enhances the effect when combined with antipsychotics, antielliptic drugs, sleeping pills and other similar drugs. Increases the concentration of imipramine in the blood. In combination with clozapine, respiratory depression is noted.

Melatonin is not compatible with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory and CNS depressant drugs, beta-blockers.

The mechanisms of interaction with other drugs are described in detail in the instructions for sleeping pills, and a competent doctor will definitely take this factor into account. There is insufficient information about some means.

One thing is certain: none of the drugs can be combined with alcohol consumption and smoking.

trusted-source[ 24 ], [ 25 ], [ 26 ]

Storage conditions

Sleeping pills are recommended to be stored at room temperature (up to 25 degrees), in a cool, dry place, protected from children and sunlight. For some drugs, pharmacies create special storage conditions, for example, phenazepam is stored according to list B.

The temperature range for storing Melaxen is 10 – 30 degrees, it must be stored and transported in its original packaging.

Do not take expired sleeping pills to avoid allergies or other harm.

trusted-source[ 27 ], [ 28 ]

Shelf life

The shelf life of sleeping pills ranges from two (Sna Formula, Sonex) to four years (Melaxen, Donormil effervescent). Coated tablets (melatonin, Donormil and many others) remain valid for five years.

Sleeping pills without prescription

Over-the-counter sleeping pills can be divided into several groups.

  1. Based on medicinal herbs:
  • valerian,
  • motherwort-forte,
  • persen,
  • Dormiplant,
  • Novo-Passit,
  • phytosed,
  • melaxen,
  • Liken.

The tablets contain extracts of valerian root and motherwort herb.

Dormiplant consists of dry extract of valerian root and lemon balm leaves.

Persen, in addition to the above-mentioned components, contains peppermint leaves, and Novo-Passit contains a whole bouquet: valerian, lemon balm, hops, passionflower, St. John's wort, hawthorn, elderberry.

Herbal sleep pills are more convenient to use and replace natural herbal tinctures. They are useful for mild insomnia and increased nervousness. Their main advantage is a calming, relaxing effect; these drugs are not able to completely solve the problem of insomnia. To achieve the desired effect, they must be taken for at least three weeks.

  1. The hormone-like drug Melaxen is an artificial analogue of the sleep hormone called melatonin. The tablets are very effective and have a minimum of contraindications: they do not cause addiction, headaches, or impaired coordination, and do not affect the natural phases of sleep, memory, or attention during wakefulness. These qualities make Melaxen safe and allow it to be sold without a prescription.
  2. Histamine receptor blockers and ethylamines: donormil, diphenhydramine, doxylamine, valocordin-doxylamine.

Harmless sleeping pills

Among the abundance of pharmaceutical drugs that relieve insomnia and its causes, there are so-called harmless sleeping pills. They are not addictive and have a minimum of undesirable effects. Some of them are sold by pharmacists without prescriptions.

Medicines that use the sedative properties of medicinal plants in their formulations are safe:

  • Novo-Passit,
  • persen,
  • motherwort,
  • afobazole.

Harmless tablets also include synthetic and combination sleeping pills:

  • donormil,
  • melaxen (melatonin),
  • imovan,
  • zopiclone,
  • phenibut,
  • Dormiplant
  • let's dissect.

The arsenal of modern pharmacy also includes medications for normalizing sleep in children, although they are used extremely rarely. The choice depends on the child's age: Persen is prescribed from three years, Dormiplant - from six, Novo-Passit - from 12 years.

Sleep disorders have different nature. Mild insomnia can be overcome with harmless medications; in complex cases, a doctor's consultation and possibly long-term treatment are necessary. The choice of medication and its dosage should be based on the individual problems of the patient and qualified advice from a somnologist.
