Carcinoid syndrome is caused by the secretion of biogenic amines and is clinically manifested by hot flashes, tachycardia, diarrhea and attacks of bronchial asthma. The presence of clinical manifestations indicates that biogenic amines have overcome the liver barrier as a result of the metastatic process.

Drug treatment of carcinoid syndrome involves the combined use of histamine H1- and H2-receptor antagonists or methyldopa. There are observations of a positive effect from the use of somatostatin.
