Odeston relieves the patient from cholestasis, preventing cholesterol from crystallizing. As a result of the drug, the amount of bile secreted by the body increases, in which the concentration of cholesterol increases along with acids. As a result, lipase is activated in the pancreas, which subsequently leads to more effective absorption of fats.

Release form
Odeston tablets, 200 mg each. Come in 3 types of packaging: 50 tablets on 1 blister plate; 50 tablets in a polyethylene package; 10 tablets on a blister plate (5 blisters in a pack).
Pharmacodynamics
The medicine has a choleretic effect on the body, increasing the amount of bile formed and secreted. Odeston has a selective antispasmodic effect on the bile ducts and the sphincter of Oddi (without reducing the contraction of blood pressure and the gastrointestinal tract). Under the influence of the drug, bile stagnation decreases, which prevents the crystallization of cholesterol and prevents the development of cholelithiasis.
Pharmacokinetics
After administration, it is absorbed from the digestive tract. It weakly binds to plasma proteins. It reaches its maximum concentration in the blood serum after 2-3 hours. The half-life is approximately 1 hour. Hymecromone is excreted through the kidneys (approximately 93% as glucuronate, another 1.4% as sulfonate, and 0.3% of the substance are excreted unchanged).
Dosing and administration
It is intended for internal use, half an hour before meals. The dosage is 3 tablets/day, they should be divided into 3 doses, i.e. 1 tablet per dose. In some cases, the daily dose can be increased to 6 tablets. The course of therapy lasts for 2 weeks.
Use Odeston during pregnancy
During pregnancy, Odeston can be prescribed only in exceptional situations. In this case, the attending physician must determine whether the possible help to the pregnant patient outweighs the possible danger to her child, and decide in favor of the first option.
Contraindications
The medicine is contraindicated in the following cases:
- Renal or hepatic failure;
- Gallbladder obstruction;
- Ulcerative colitis;
- Gastric ulcer;
- Hypersensitivity to coumarins, as well as additional components of the drug;
- Granulomatous enteritis;
- Hemophilia;
- During lactation;
- Ulcer of the duodenum.
The drug is also not prescribed to children.
Side effects Odeston
The use of Odeston may cause the following side effects:
- Diarrhea;
- Flatulence;
- Hives;
- Pain in the epigastrium;
- Anaphylactic shock;
- Ulceration of the gastrointestinal tract;
- Headache.
Overdose
In case of overdose, increased side effects of the drug may be observed.
Interactions with other drugs
Odeston helps to increase the effectiveness of antithrombotic drugs that are phylloquinone antagonists. In combination with morphine, the spasmolytic effect of hymecromone is reduced, because morphine has a strong spasmodic effect on the sphincter of Oddi. If the drug is taken in combination with metoclopramide or any of its derivatives, the effectiveness of both drugs is reduced.
