Meralis is a medicine used for diseases affecting the nasal cavity. Included in the subgroup of sympathomimetic agents.

The xylometazoline component is a sympathomimetic agent that has an effect on α-adrenergic receptors. [1]

The medication leads to a narrowing of the blood vessels inside the nose, weakening the swelling of the nasal mucosa and paranasal sinuses, due to which the breathing processes through the nose with nasal congestion are improved.

Indications Meralis

It is used to eliminate signs of nasal congestion in case of hay fever, sinusitis , colds and rhinitis of allergic origin. It is also used to facilitate the drainage of nasal secretions in the event of sinus involvement.

It can be prescribed as an adjunct in case of otitis media (to remove swelling of the mucous membrane), and in addition to simplify the rhinoscopy procedure.

Release form

The release of drugs is realized in the form of a nasal spray - inside bottles equipped with a dispenser with a volume of 10 or 15 ml. Inside the pack - 1 such bottle.

Pharmacodynamics

The development of the therapeutic effect begins after 2 minutes from the moment of application and continues for a period of 12 hours. The medication is tolerated without complications, even in persons with sensitive mucous membranes.

The drug weakens mucociliary activity; it has balanced pH values within the limits that are characteristic of the nasal cavity.

Dosing and administration

Before using drugs, you need to completely clean the nasal cavity.

For children 2-12 years old, a 0.05% spray is used - 1 injection into each nostril; the procedure is performed 1-2 times a day.

For persons over 12 years old, 0.1% Meralis is used - 1 injection into each of the nostrils, 2-3 times per day.

The medication should be used for a maximum of 5 days, unless a different duration of the treatment cycle has been prescribed by the attending doctor. In this case, after a few days of interruption, it is allowed to resume the use of the medicine.

With prolonged use of the medication, the development of atrophy of the nasal mucosa is possible. For chronic disorders, the drug is used exclusively under medical supervision.

Before the 1st use, 4 injections of the drug should be made into the air - so that the drug portion becomes homogeneous. The bottle must be stored upright. If the medication has not been used for a period of several days, it is required to perform at least 1 injection into the air before use - in order to also ensure uniformity of dosage.

  • Application for children

The medicine in the form of a 0.05% spray can be used in persons 2-12 years of age. A spray having a 0.1% volume is prescribed to persons over 12 years of age.

Use Meralis during pregnancy

The medication is forbidden to prescribe to pregnant women - due to the likelihood of developing a vasoconstrictor effect.

There is no evidence that Meralis has a negative impact on babies.

There is no information on whether xylometazoline is capable of being excreted in mother's milk, which is why drugs can be used during lactation only with a medical appointment and with extreme caution.

An increased blood pressure index can be replaced by a reduced one. Young children are more susceptible to drug toxicity.

Persons with suspected overdose need supportive procedures and immediate symptomatic action, if necessary (under medical supervision). It also requires medical supervision of the patient for a period of several hours. In case of severe intoxication, against the background of which cardiac arrest occurs, resuscitation procedures should be carried out within a period of at least 1 hour.

Interactions with other drugs

Xylometazoline is able to potentiate the activity of MAOIs, as well as induce the development of a hypertensive crisis. It is forbidden to prescribe medicine to people taking MAOIs (or who have used them during the last 14 days).

The use of sympathomimetics together with tricyclics or tetracyclics can potentiate the sympathomimetic effect of xylometazoline - because of this, this combination is not used.

The introduction of Meralis together with β-blockers can provoke bronchospasm and a decrease in blood pressure.
