When lemon is mentioned, saliva forms in the mouth and a corresponding grimace appears on the face. It would seem difficult to find a product more sour than this. Which does not prevent the fruit from being one of the most popular and beloved. Lemon is used not only as food, but also in folk medicine. Lemon for sore throat is used internally, with drinks, and externally - for inhalations and gargling.
Can you use lemon if you have a sore throat?
To determine whether lemon is good for sore throat, you should familiarize yourself with its properties. Many people drink liters of hot tea with lemons when they have any cold, sincerely believing in their healing power. Although high temperature has a detrimental effect on the beneficial properties, leaving only the taste. For real benefit, lemon should be used in a special way for sore throat.
There are several ways to use citrus to treat a sore throat:
- eat a clean lemon piece by piece;
- sprinkle the wedges with sugar;
- gargle with diluted juice;
- combine with honey, salt, herbs, spices;
- make mixtures and potions based on fresh juice;
- use citric acid for procedures.
The benefits of the vitamin fruit are obvious: it relieves pain, reduces swelling of the tonsils, and helps reduce fever. Sour citrus enriches with vitamins necessary for immunity. The juice acts as an antiseptic, suppressing pathogenic microorganisms. Essential oils have anti-edematous and anti-inflammatory properties. In general, the fruit prevents secondary infections and complications.
There are few contraindications to the use of lemons, they are mainly associated with hypersensitivity to the active components. For those who suffer from increased acidity in the stomach, ulcers, dermatitis, there is a risk of exacerbation, especially when combining lemon with honey.
How to treat sore throat with lemon?
It is useful for a patient with a sore throat to eat lemons in slices, cutting half of the fruit at a time. Eat without leaving anything, that is, with the peel, because it contains the lion's share of useful components. At the same time, lemon juice for a sore throat during chewing washes the inflamed areas of the throat and suppresses the microbes that cause a sore throat.
After a few hours, eat the other half of the fruit. You need to chew it slowly and for a long time. To get the maximum effect, you cannot drink or eat anything. You are allowed to eat a full meal no earlier than an hour later. Treatment of sore throat with lemon is repeated until the patient's condition improves.
- Before treating a sore throat with lemon, you should exclude the possibility of allergic reactions. This is especially true for children under 5 years old. If you have a sensitive throat, you should refuse the concentrated product or reduce the dosage. It is better to drink warm lemon-honey liquid or gargle with diluted lemon juice.
Despite the effectiveness of the procedures, lemons alone will not help. They can strengthen the immune system, cleanse the throat surface from pathogenic bacteria, and reduce the severity of symptoms. But it is unlikely that you will be able to cure a serious pathology using only folk methods. Therefore, it is important for the patient to consult an ENT specialist and follow his recommendations.
Lemon for sore throat in adults
The effectiveness of lemon for sore throat in adults depends on the method of use and the phase of the disease. With strong immunity, as a rule, the tonsils do not become inflamed. But if the first symptoms are obvious (weakness, chills, sore throat and increasing pain in the throat), then there is no time left to strengthen the immune system with citrus fruits. Tonsillitis develops rapidly, so treatment with fresh lemon for sore throat should be done at the very beginning. And if this fails, then use the sour fruit only after the acute inflammatory phenomena have subsided.
- It is generally clear why lemon is not recommended during the acute period: the inflamed mucous membrane of the throat is too painful at this time and reacts to acidic irritants by increasing symptoms: pain, dryness, cough.
You can eat lemon one piece at a time, together with the zest and pulp, rinse it with juice and water, do aromatherapy procedures or inhalations, including in a mixture with other ingredients.
Lemon is very effective in preventing inflammation of the tonsils. A vitamin-rich remedy for this purpose is prepared from grated citrus fruits, divided into two parts. Half is mixed with sugar, the other half with honey. During the vitamin deficiency season, take a spoonful: in the morning - the mass with sugar, in the evening - honey and lemon. This mixture, tasty and very useful, is recommended for children.
Lemon for sore throat in children
Babies often have sore throats, and some have tonsillitis several times a year. Lemons for tonsillitis in children are allowed from the age of 2. But small children may not perceive a spicy product, they are also easily subject to an allergic reaction. Therefore, this method is better suited for older children, from about five years old, who are able to consciously take the recommended food and medicines.
Lemon for sore throat in children, as well as in adults, has a beneficial effect on the entire body, since it is a vitamin, immunostimulating, antioxidant product. For sore tonsils, the local effect of the sour fruit is no less important, which is as follows:
- reduction of swelling;
- relief of pain and inflammation;
- decrease in temperature;
- suppression of pathogenic microbes.
At the initial stage, citrus, in combination with medications, increases the body's support capabilities and prevents the pathology from worsening. If the sore throat has nevertheless developed into a purulent one, lemon does not lose its relevance, because the ascorbic acid, vitamins, and essential compounds it contains strengthen the body and relieve the symptoms of the disease.
- It is better to offer children sweetened lemon to chew, which has a pleasant taste.
- Lemon-honey juice is useful for lubricating purulent tonsils. The procedure is carried out with a cotton swab, three times a day, it helps reduce inflammation and softens purulent plugs.
- For internal use, prepare a sweet gruel from crushed lemon and honey. For treatment, give 1 teaspoon 3 times, for prevention - 2 times a day (for a month).
Lemon in children can cause unpleasant sensations in the throat, increased pain, irritation of the mucous membrane. In such cases, you can limit yourself to drinking warm tea with a slice of healthy fruit added. Or dilute the drink until the sour taste disappears.
It is not recommended to use citric acid for treatment of children, because the industrial product most often does not have the properties of natural juice.
Lemon for purulent tonsillitis
Properly used lemon for sore throat actively resists pathogenic microorganisms, normalizes temperature, reduces swelling, hyperemia, pain, which accompany the purulent form of the disease. Acids and fungicides create an extremely unfavorable environment for bacteria, as a result of which they stop multiplying and soon die. Moreover, lemon for purulent sore throat is not the only effective remedy; drug therapy aimed at suppressing harmful microflora and restoring the mucous membrane is mandatory for treatment.
The fruit has properties that are useful for various infections:
- stimulates the immune system;
- tones the body;
- improves decreased appetite;
- acts as an antiseptic;
- strengthens blood vessels and myocardium
- reduces the intensity of inflammation.
For rinsing with purulent tonsillitis, prepare a lemon solution (2 tablespoons per 100 ml of water). The procedure is performed for at least a minute. For the desired effect, such rinsing should be up to six times a day.
If the lemon solution causes a burning sensation or increased pain in the throat, you should stop gargling. The product is contraindicated for children under 5 years of age, it is not prescribed for intolerance to the ingredients, increased acidity in the stomach, ulcers and colitis in the acute phase.
Tea with lemon for sore throat
Lemon is useful for sore throat at any stage. At the initial stage of the catarrhal disease, an effective method is to eat a lemon with the peel: first - half, three hours later - the second. If necessary, lemon therapy is repeated the next day.
- Warm tea with lemon is especially useful for sore throat. The drink is brewed from leaf tea or medicinal raw materials, such as chamomile, which has antiseptic and antioxidant properties.
Place a citrus slice in a mug and crush it to squeeze out more juice. You can do it easier: add a little lemon juice to a warm chamomile decoction. To speed up the improvement, drink tea several times a day in bed, then wrap yourself in a warm blanket.
Together with pharmaceutical preparations (tablets, sprays), the drink actively promotes recovery. Added natural honey not only improves the taste, but also enriches the drink with the whole range of useful substances that it has. With purulent tonsillitis, the fruit strengthens the immune system, relieves discomfort and elevated temperature.
- Even those who cannot gargle with lemon water or chew the fruit whole because of the strong acid can drink lemon tea. Tea acts more gently, does not irritate inflamed tonsils and the mucous membrane of the larynx.
When treating tonsillitis with lemon, it is important to give up bad habits - smoking and drinking alcohol, not to eat hot and dairy foods in large portions, and not to eat unhealthy foods.
Lemon with honey for sore throat
Honey and lemon are used in alternative medicine for sore throats, separately and in combination with each other. Lemon contains a huge dose of vitamin C, which is good for immunity, oils with antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. Honey is a natural antibiotic that envelops irritated mucous membranes and accelerates recovery.
Combined together, lemon and honey for sore throat represent a powerful medicine with the following properties:
- antimicrobial;
- antipyretic;
- pain reliever;
- decongestant;
- tonic;
- renewing.
There are many ways to prepare home remedies for sore throat. To increase their effectiveness, additional ingredients are added: medicinal plants, spices, table salt. And, of course, medications prescribed by an otolaryngologist.
Tea with honey and lemon is the easiest to prepare, because each of us drinks this drink even with healthy tonsils. For tonsillitis, it is recommended to do the following:
- Pour 400 ml of boiling water over 2 tbsp of loose tea in a teapot, add half a lemon, cut into slices. This way the fruit will give off juice better. After steeping (up to 10 minutes), when the drink has cooled, add honey (to taste). In boiling water, honey loses its beneficial properties and becomes harmful. Drink a portion of tea every two to three hours. Do not throw away the slices, but eat them.
An effective remedy for sore throat is prepared from candied honey and sour juice, in equal parts. The mass is sucked like a lollipop every three hours, after which you cannot eat or drink for an hour.
Lemon juice for sore throat
To use lemon juice for sore throat, fresh citrus is squeezed into a clean container. There are special convenient lemon squeezers, with which you can quickly get the maximum amount of sour juice. First, the citrus is cut crosswise, then half of the fruit is inserted into the squeezer and rotated around its axis, easily separating the soft contents from the dense peel.
Lemon juice is used for sore throats if there is no allergy to citrus fruits. The substance is used in different ways: diluted with water for gargling, added to herbal teas for drinking, mixed with honey together with the pulp. Such a gruel is useful not only for sick people, but also for healthy people - for the prevention of sore throats, colds and other diseases that occur with weakened immunity.
Several recipes using juice:
- Lubricate the tonsils with a lemon-honey mixture (1:2) for antiseptic purposes. If signs of irritation occur, reduce the concentration of the juice.
- A similar composition (it is better to take solid honey) should be dissolved in the oral cavity until completely dissolved.
- Gargle with an aqueous solution (2 liters of juice per 100 ml of water) at least 6 times a day.
- Boil the juice with water (1:3), drink cooled 1 teaspoon 4 times a day.
- Use the juice from the peel for inhalation using an aroma lamp.
A sour fruit containing only 2.5% sugar is practically the only citrus fruit allowed for people with diabetes. In addition to immune stimulation, the juice strengthens vascular walls, has a beneficial effect on the heart muscle, stimulates appetite, including in children, and tones the body.
Contraindications to the use of lemon juice:
- age up to 5 years;
- peptic ulcer and exacerbation of colitis;
- reflux and hyperacid gastritis;
- antidepressant treatment.
Pregnant women should use sour citrus fruits with caution.
Scalded lemon for sore throat
Proper nutrition for throat diseases is aimed at protecting the affected organ from chemical, mechanical, thermal damage. The widespread opinion about the benefits of hot food can do a disservice: aggravate the course of the disease, increase inflammation and pain.
The correct option is to drink plenty of warm drinks, as well as other food. Hot can burn the membrane, cold can provoke an exacerbation of the process. The same can be caused by lemon with angina, if the vitamin fruit with very sour contents is not consumed according to the rules.
A properly prepared, namely scalded lemon will help alleviate the condition when the throat starts to hurt, the whole body starts to tremble and ache. Before use, it should be doused with boiling water, cut into thin slices and sprinkled with granulated sugar. Eat it whole in one go. A positive result will be confirmed by a quick decrease in temperature and an improvement in well-being.
- The following method eliminates a sore throat: hold lemon slices without the peel in your mouth, swallowing the juice released from the pulp. Repeat the procedure every 3 hours, but not more often, given the harmful effect of acid on tooth enamel.
An effective recipe suggests the following steps: divide the scalded lemon in half and eat it in two doses, with a 2-hour break. Chew one part with the peel, sweeten with honey or sugar if necessary.
Lemon and ginger for sore throat
Ginger, which has recently regained its former popularity in cooking, confidently proves its effectiveness as a medicinal plant. Ginger rhizomes, like lemon fruits, help with sore throat:
- disinfect the mouth and throat;
- reduce the amount of pathogenic microflora;
- prevent the progression of inflammation;
- increase the intensity of sweating and reduce fever;
- stimulate the immune system.
The beneficial properties are due to valuable bioactive compounds, essential oils, vitamins, phytoncides, minerals, and amino acids. Ginger-based products are recommended for acute tonsillitis, flu, pharyngitis, and colds.
Lemon and ginger are effective when used together for sore throat. Such recipes provide double action. We give examples of folk recipes containing both components.
- To slow down the development of sore throat. Shake 1 teaspoon of powdered ginger with 750 ml of water, boil for 10 minutes. After cooling, add 3 liters of lemon juice and honey, a pinch of black pepper. Drink three times a day, then prepare and drink fresh - until recovery; usually this is 3-4 days.
- Tea against sore throat and various colds. Take a spoon of grated ginger, a slice of lemon and apple, 1 teaspoon of honey, 2 cloves, a little black tea. All ingredients except honey are brewed with 300 ml of boiling water and infused in a thermos. Honey is added immediately before use. Drink 2 servings per day.
Gargling with lemon for sore throat
Lemon gargles are an effective way to get rid of a sore throat quickly. Acid creates conditions that are fatal to microorganisms: they cannot stand an acidic environment. To gargle with lemon for a sore throat, you need juicy, ripe fruits that give enough juice. Mix it with warm water and gargle as often as possible, making sure that the concentration of juice does not cause discomfort. Proportions - 2 spoons per 100 ml of water, procedure time - 1 minute.
- Gargling was used in folk medicine long before the appearance of official anti-anginal drugs. Today, the method is successfully used along with drug treatment and promotes a speedy recovery.
Lemon for sore throat in the form of gargling has a local antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, anti-edematous, antipyretic effect. During the procedures, the inflamed areas receive a shock dose of citric, malic acids and phytoncides, an unfavorable environment for pathogens is formed here.
As a result of the procedures, the surface of the throat is cleared of microbes and toxic waste products, swelling and hyperemia are reduced, the temperature gradually returns to normal, and painful sensations disappear.
To increase the effectiveness of rinsing, it should be done according to the rules.
- Use only fresh products.
- Use a lemon solution at a comfortable temperature and concentration.
- Gargle after eating, then refrain from eating for about an hour.
- Each procedure should be performed for several minutes, using at least a glass of liquid.
- Rinse, throwing your head back and making a long “ah-ah” sound.
- Do not swallow the solution, spit it out.
- The effectiveness of rinsing is enhanced by simultaneous nasal lavage.
Can you chew lemon if you have a sore throat?
Everyone is aware of the benefits of lemon for sore throats and colds, and it is unlikely that anyone who has fallen ill has not resorted to this remedy. Indeed, sour citrus is an inexpensive, effective and pleasant additional method of treatment. And if you chew lemon with zest for sore throats, it can become a decisive factor in improving your health. Tibetan healers recommend this procedure. Although we certainly advise that you contact official doctors for any ailments.
You can chew citrus fruits at once or in two doses. Essential oils and citric acid cope equally well with pathogens and inflammations of the throat.
- In case of severe pain and fever, pour hot water over a medium-sized lemon, slice it thinly and sprinkle with sugar. Eat it all, after which you should expect the fever to subside and the pain to stop.
- When a sore throat is starting, the scalded fruit is divided in two; the first part is eaten with the skin, immediately, sweetened if desired, the rest - after two hours.
You should not eat anything for an hour after each intake of the fruit, so as not to negate the beneficial effects of the acids contained in the lemon.
Some patients do not eat lemon, complaining of the irritating effect of the acid. This happens in people with a sensitive throat. For them, other methods of using lemon for sore throat are suitable: gargles or teas, in which the concentration of lemon components is much weaker, but vitamins and organic acids are preserved.
What should you not do if you have a sore throat?
Home remedies, including lemon for sore throat, are actively used by many families who do not like pharmaceuticals and any chemicals in general. Most have their own methods of using medicinal fruits and herbs. Otolaryngologists do not object to them either. But in order not to miss something important during the illness, it is important to know what you should not do when you have a sore throat. So, you should not:
- Hoping that it will “go away on its own” and ignoring the pain.
- Lie idle or work despite your deteriorating health.
- Ignore obvious signs of worsening of the process: swelling, sudden increase in temperature, enlarged lymph nodes, formation of pus.
- Limit yourself to lollipops and sweet tea.
- Strain your voice, talk a lot or whisper.
- Smoking, drinking alcohol, eating spicy and coarse foods, chewing gum.
- Drink hot and cold, carbonated and sour drinks.
- Be lazy, do not follow folk or doctor-prescribed procedures.
- Self-medicate, in particular, take antibiotics without reason. And if a specialist prescribes them, do not violate discipline and dosage.
It is not so much the sore throat that is dangerous, but the possible complications. A neglected process is fraught with complications: rheumatism, damage to the joints, heart muscle, kidneys. Therefore, it is important not to miss the onset of the disease and start treatment in time.
Lemon is not just a vitamin supplement to tea or decoration of fish dishes. Sour citrus is effective as a medicinal product. In particular, lemon demonstrates excellent results for sore throats and colds. Available citrus can be used by each patient with benefit, using one method or another: teas, gargles, use separately or with other substances. And the constant presence of lemons in the diet helps to stay healthy in any season.
