Garazon is a combined anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic agent used locally for ophthalmological diseases of an infectious nature.
Indications Garazon
Garazon is recommended for use in blepharitis, conjunctivitis and keratoconjunctivitis, keratitis, dacryocystitis, episcleritis, uveitis, iridocyclitis, retinitis, meibomitis and eye injuries (including radiation, thermal and chemical burns). The drug can be used in the treatment of acute and chronic external otitis: complicated microbial dermatitis and eczema of the external auditory canal and auricle.
Pharmacodynamics
The therapeutic effect of Garazon is provided by two active substances: the aminoglycoside antibiotic gentamicin and the corticosteroid betamethasone.
Gentamicin is active against infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus, Klebsiella spp., Serratia spp., Neisseria spp., etc. It has a bactericidal effect, penetrating the cell membrane of microorganisms and disrupting the process of protein synthesis in them.
The synthetic fluorinated glucocorticosteroid (GCS) betamethasone relieves local inflammation and allergic reactions by inhibiting the formation and release of inflammatory reaction mediators from mast cells and reducing the movement of immunocompetent cells to the lesion. The antiexudative effect of betamethasone is due to the narrowing of the lumen of blood vessels and a decrease in the permeability of their walls.
Dosing and administration
In case of ophthalmologic diseases, Garazon drops should be administered by pulling down the eyelid into the space between the eyeball and the eyelid (subconjunctivally) – one or two drops up to four times a day. In cases of acute inflammation, the drug is recommended to be used every 2-3 hours. The standard duration of treatment is two weeks, but if the effect of treatment is not observed after 8-10 days, the use of the drug should be discontinued.
When treating external otitis, three drops of the drug are instilled three times a day. It is also possible to insert a turunda soaked in drops into the ear canal (with replacement once a day).
Use Garazon during pregnancy
Garazon is contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation.
Contraindications
Garazon drops are contraindicated for use in cases of hypersensitivity to gentaminin or betamethasone; infection with the herpes simplex virus and chickenpox;
Fungal infections of the eyes and ears; trachoma; mechanical damage or ulcers of the cornea of the eye; active tuberculosis.
Garazon is not used in case of damage (perforation) of the eardrum and inflammation of the auditory nerve (neuritis).
This product is contraindicated for use in children under 8 years of age.
Prescribing Garazon for high myopia, open-angle glaucoma, diabetes mellitus, and acute suppurative processes requires increased caution.
Side effects Garazon
Garazon drops may cause side effects in the form of: quickly passing itching and burning; increased intraocular pressure; deterioration of vision; clouding of the lens due to the development of subcapsular cataract; thinning of the cornea or sclera of the eye; dilation of the pupil; damage to the optic nerve; secondary infection of the inflammation site.
It should be borne in mind that gentamicin, which is part of Garazon, is an ototoxic drug that affects the auditory nerve.
