Evista inhibits bone resorption in women during menopause and affects the course of the osteogenesis cycle (bone tissue formation). It was released on the market in 1997. It has been used in 50 countries for a long time, but it has recently become widespread in our country. Synonyms: ketidine, bonmax.

Did you know that to activate bone formation, in addition to taking medications that affect estrogen receptors, you need to take fluoride supplements? We all know that fluoride is found in toothpaste. It strengthens teeth. But the latest developments by scientists also convincingly prove its beneficial effect on the spine: the incidence of spinal fractures in postmenopausal women has decreased by 70% due to taking fluoride preparations. Sodium fluoride is prescribed to stimulate bone formation.

Evista has one serious side effect – thrombosis. It occurred in 2% of women taking the drug. Hot flashes were observed in 15%, and convulsions in 8%. If you notice these symptoms in yourself, tell your doctor about it, it may be enough to reduce the dose for them to go away. Before starting to take the drug, tell your doctor about any chronic diseases you currently have or have had in the past: heart disease, liver disease, stroke, breast cancer, kidney cancer. During treatment, you should avoid prolonged immobility to prevent blood clots.

The role of physical activity in maintaining bone density is enormous: the more actively the bones are stimulated by muscles, the denser they are.

Estrogen stimulates the production of vitamin D and retains calcium in the body. To produce vitamin D, without which calcium is not absorbed, you need to be in the sun more often. Sunlight helps to synthesize it. The daily intake of calcium is 1200-1500 mg. We divide the norm into two or three doses.

With osteoporosis, you should be especially wary of spinal fractures. Be very careful in icy conditions. At a young age, calcium and phosphorus are used to build bone tissue. By the age of 25, growth ends. Bone mass begins to lose density. Therefore, it is important to have strong bones by the age of growth end.

With a body weight of less than 53 kg, the risk of developing osteoporosis increases. The risk is also increased in those who do not consume enough calcium throughout their life. For example, in those who do not like or do not tolerate dairy products. A certain role is played by childlessness or, conversely, having many children, prolonged breastfeeding, the presence of osteoporosis in relatives, lack of sun, low physical activity, emotional stress, decreased muscle mass, ovarian dysfunction. In old age, thin, short women are more likely to get hip fractures, after which they can no longer stand on their feet. A certain role is also played by diabetes mellitus and surgeries after which the woman lies down for a long time. It is necessary to pay attention to its first signs. As a rule, osteoporosis manifests itself as mild pain in the lower back, hip joint, knee, which intensifies as the disease progresses.

Elderly people reduce their motor activity, their vessel diameter changes, and the concentration of calcitonin in the blood plasma decreases. To stop the progression of the disease, the doctor may prescribe calcitonin obtained from salmon bones. Taking calcitonin preparations is long-term, about 6 years.

After menopause, a deficiency of progesterone is first detected, and then estrogen. Estrogens are regulators of bone resorption. They suppress resorption by reducing the activity of osteoclasts. After menopause, bone loss averages 3%. Osteoporosis at a younger age is sometimes caused by excess estrogen in the blood.

In Germany, in addition to Evista, Osteochin, an extract from fern leaves, has become widespread. Like Evista, it also acts on estrogen receptors in bones. Of course, hormone replacement therapy is still used.

With Evista, you won't be afraid of postmenopausal fractures - you'll be able to remain active for a long time without worrying about your bones.
