Eucazoline is classified as a drug that is used to treat colds accompanied by a runny nose. The medication can be produced in the form of a spray or nasal drops.

Indications Eucazoline

External medication Eucazoline is prescribed:

  • to facilitate breathing through the nose in rhinitis, rhinogaimritis, pollinosis, accompanied by considerable swelling of the nasal mucosa and hypersecretion;
  • to reduce swelling of nasopharyngeal tissue in the diagnosis of otitis media;
  • as preparatory procedures for the diagnosis and therapy of the nasal cavity.

Release form

Eucazoline can be produced in the form of a spray, in a glass bottle with a special dispenser (10 g), or in the form of drops, in a glass bottle with a drip nozzle (10 g). Each bottle is packed in individual cardboard packaging.

The active component of the medication is xylometazoline hydrochloride in the amount of 1 mg. Among the additional substances are: benzalkonium chloride, eucalyptus oil, propylene glycol, macrogol, povidone, etc. 

Pharmacodynamics

Eucazoline - a medication for the common cold for external use. The active substance xylometazoline is able to reduce the filling of the lumen of the blood vessels, to remove the puffiness of the mucous tissues. The drug has a pronounced vasoconstrictive effect, reduces the degree of redness of the tissue surfaces and the release of exudate, which helps restore normal nasal breathing.

Eucazoline effectively reduces the manifestations of the inflammatory process and inhibits the growth of microbial cells. Eucalyptus oil plays the role of a soft antispasmodic and moisturizer for the mucosa, moreover, eucalyptus is able to suppress the development of Staphylococcus aureus, mycobacterium tuberculosis, causative agent of dysentery and trichomonads. Essential oils of eucalyptus also have a distracting and analgesic effect.

Pharmacokinetics

The medication can not have any systemic effect on the body, since with local application, the absorption of active components into the blood is extremely low.

With external use, the therapeutic effect is observed during the first minutes, with a total duration of up to 10 hours.

Dosing and administration

The drug is used externally:

  • Eucazoline Spray - allows the active substance to be evenly distributed over the surface of the tissues of the nasal cavity. Can be assigned to adults and children from 12 years of age. The spray is injected once into each nostril opening, you can repeat the injection after 8-10 hours;
  • Eucazoline in the form of drops - apply from 7 years of age to 12 years - one drop into each nostril opening, with the possible repeated administration in 8-10 hours. Adults injected up to 2 drops in each nostril, the interval between the administration of drops - 8-10 hours. Duration of treatment - up to one week.

Use Eucazoline during pregnancy

Due to the fact that the medication does not penetrate the systemic bloodstream, its use in standard dosages during pregnancy is allowed. Also, local use of the medication is allowed during breastfeeding of the baby. It is not necessary to stop breastfeeding for the period of treatment with the drug. 

Contraindications

 Contraindications for the use of Eucazoline are:

  • increased sensitivity of the organism to the components of the drug;
  • increased intraocular pressure;
  • atrophy of the mucous tissues of the nasal cavity;
  • hypertension;
  • hyperthyroidism (thyrotoxicosis).

 The drug in the form of a spray is used by children from 12 years of age.

 The drip form of Eucazoline can be used from 7 years.

Side effects Eucazoline

 The drug has minimal side effects, which are rare. Among them:

  • sensation of tingling and dryness in the nasal cavity;
  • desires for sneezing;
  • dilution and hypersecretion of exudate;
  • temporary deterioration of olfactory functions;
  • signs of mucosal atrophy;
  • disorders of cardiac activity;
  • increased blood pressure;
  • allergic manifestations.

 Prolonged and unsystematic use of medication can lead to a decrease in susceptibility to its properties.

Overdose

A significant excess of the recommended dosages can trigger the development of visual dysfunctions, hypertension, increased intraocular pressure, the onset of migraine, drying of the nasopharyngeal mucosa. Prolonged use of high doses of the drug may lead to the development of atrophy of the mucous tissues at the site of administration.

Treatment of the overdose state is carried out by the appointment of sympatholytic drugs and α-blockers (eg, phentolamine). If necessary, prescribe symptomatic therapy.

In case of accidental ingestion of the medication, gastric lavage, sorbent medication (activated charcoal, sorbes) and, sometimes, laxatives (regulax, bisacodyl) are used.

Interactions with other drugs

Medication Eucazoline is capable of interacting with other medications only with the resorptive action of the drug.

Means that excite adrenergic receptors (ephedrine, galazoline, naphthysine, mezaton) can enhance the effects of eucazoline.

Blockers of β-adrenergic receptors (adrenaline, norepinephrine), sympatholytic agents (octadine, reserpine) and calcium channel blockers (cinnarizine, verapamil, amlodipine) can weaken the action of eucazoline.

Antidepressants of the tricyclic structure (imipramine, azafen) lower their own activity with simultaneous application with Eucazoline.

The effect of the combined use of Eucazoline with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (metralindole, selegiline) may decrease. 

Do not prescribe sympathomimetics in conjunction with sedatives.
