Elozon is a dermatological drug from the category of active corticosteroids (group III).

Indications Elozone

It is used to eliminate itching and inflammation that occurs with various dermatoses and can be treated with corticosteroids: with psoriasis (excluding its widespread plaque form), and also with atopic dermatitis.

Release form

The drug is released in the form of a cream, in a tube with a volume of 30 g. Inside the pack there is 1 tube of cream.

Pharmacodynamics

Mometasone furoate is a synthetic corticosteroid used locally. The substance has anti-inflammatory, anti-exudative, and antipruritic properties.

Pharmacokinetics

Pharmacokinetic tests have shown that systemic absorption of 0.1% of the drug during topical application is minimal. About 0.4% of the drug portion is excreted from the body within 72 hours after skin application of the cream.

It is almost impossible to determine the type of metabolic products, because too small a quantity of the medicinal element is found in the excreta and blood plasma.

Dosing and administration

During treatment, the affected parts of the skin should be treated with a thin layer of cream. The procedure should be carried out once a day. The duration of this course depends on the course of the pathology and its severity, so it is selected for each patient individually.

If it is necessary to treat the skin on the face with cream, it is necessary to limit yourself to minimal doses of the medicine, and the duration of such a course can be a maximum of 5 days.

Use Elozone during pregnancy

There is only limited information regarding the use of Elozon in pregnant women. It has not been possible to prove that the drug is completely safe for pregnant women.

It is recommended to use the medicine only with the permission of the attending physician in situations where the probability of benefit from its use is higher than the risk of negative consequences for the fetus. The cream is used in minimal portions and for a short period of time. It is necessary to avoid using the drug on large areas of the skin.

During lactation, the medication can only be prescribed by a doctor.

There is no information on whether topical application of GCS can result in significant systemic absorption of the drug, allowing the detection of the drug component in breast milk.

The cream is prescribed to nursing mothers only after a thorough assessment of the benefits and risks of its use. When used in large portions or over a long period of time, breastfeeding should be discontinued.

Contraindications

Among the contraindications:

  • common acne, rosacea, perioral dermatitis and cutaneous atrophy;
  • itching in the perianal or genital area, as well as diaper rash;
  • infections that are bacterial (such as pyoderma or impetigo), viral (including herpes zoster, herpes simplex, chickenpox, common warts, molluscum contagiosum, and genital warts), fungal (such as dermatophytes and candida), or parasitic in nature;
  • syphilis or tuberculosis;
  • post-vaccination manifestations;
  • use on skin damaged by wounds or ulcers;
  • the presence of high sensitivity to the active element or other components of the drug, and along with this to other GCS.

Side effects Elozone

Using the cream may cause the following side effects:

  • lesions of an infectious or invasive nature: furuncles or folliculitis;
  • disorders in the functioning of the nervous system: development of paresthesia or burning sensation;
  • disorders in the subcutaneous layer and skin surface: contact dermatitis, itching, hypertrichosis, acne, skin hypopigmentation or atrophy (or the appearance of atrophic stripes);
  • symptoms at the treatment site and systemic disorders: pain in the area treated with cream.

The drug contains methylparaben (E 218), which can provoke the development of allergic symptoms (sometimes delayed). Other components of the drug, cetostearyl alcohol and propylene glycol, can lead to the appearance of local symptoms (contact dermatitis) and irritation.

Local side effects that are rarely encountered when using topical skin GCS: dermatitis, irritation or dryness of the skin, perioral dermatitis, skin maceration, prickly heat, skin stretch marks, erythema, pustular or papular rash, exacerbation of pathology, and in addition, telangiectasia and a tingling sensation.

Overdose

With excessively prolonged use of local GCS, suppression of the system that includes the pituitary gland, hypothalamus and adrenal glands may occur, and in addition, secondary adrenal insufficiency may develop (often it can be cured).

If the function of this system is suppressed, it is necessary to increase the time intervals between treatment procedures, use a GCS with less activity, or stop using Elozon.

Because the level of steroid content in the preparation is extremely low, if the cream is accidentally swallowed, the toxic effect will be almost imperceptible or will not appear at all.

Storage conditions

Elozon should be kept in a place out of reach of small children. The temperature indicator is a maximum of 30°C.

Shelf life

Elozon can be used for 3 years from the date of manufacture of the drug.

Application for children

For children under 2 years of age, the medication can only be used with the permission of a doctor.

Since a child has a greater skin surface area to weight ratio than an adult, he or she is at greater risk of having the hypothalamus, adrenal, and pituitary system suppressed, as well as developing signs of hypercorticism syndrome when using any topical GCS. This risk increases when treating areas exceeding 20% of the total skin surface.

It is necessary to use the minimum effective doses of GCS, which are sufficient to obtain the medicinal effect. The treatment course lasts a maximum of 5 days. Long-term use of GCS can cause developmental and growth disorders in the child.

There is no data on the safety of using the medication in a child for more than 1.5 months.

There are only limited data regarding therapy in infants under 2 years of age.

It is prohibited to use Elozon to treat dermatitis caused by wearing diapers.

The cream should not be used under sealed dressings (except in cases where a doctor prescribes it), and should not be applied to the skin under waterproof panties or diapers.
