Disflatil contains the active ingredient simethicone, which is a substance used to relieve excess gas in the stomach and intestines by reducing the surface tension of gas bubbles. This allows the gas to combine into larger bubbles, making it easier for it to exit the body through the digestive system.
Simethicone is a polymer silicone that is not absorbed into the body and does not have a systemic effect. It simply facilitates the passage of gas from the digestive tract, reducing the discomfort associated with excess gas, such as bloating, colic, pressure and abdominal discomfort.
Disflatil is commonly used for the symptomatic treatment of bloating and excess gas that may occur after eating or as a result of certain medical conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome.
Indications Disflatil
- Excessive gas: The drug helps reduce the amount and facilitate the elimination of gases from the digestive tract, which can lead to a decrease in bloating, discomfort and pain in the abdomen caused by excess gas.
- Bloating: Disflatil can be used to relieve feelings of tension and pressure in the abdomen caused by the accumulation of gases in the intestines.
- Colic: The drug may help relieve symptoms of intestinal colic caused by gas, especially in infants and young children.
- Other symptoms of excess gas: Including a feeling of fullness in the abdomen, frequent passing of gas, or bloating after eating.
Release form
Disflatil is usually available as a liquid or a drop.
Pharmacodynamics
- Reducing Surface Tension: Simethicone works by reducing the surface tension of gases, which causes large gas bubbles to break down into smaller, more easily removable bubbles. This allows gases to more effectively dissipate and exit the stomach and intestines through the mouth or rectum.
- Discomfort Relief: By reducing the volume and pressure of gases in the stomach and intestines, simethicone can help reduce the discomfort, bloating, bloating and pain associated with excess gas.
Pharmacokinetics
The pharmacokinetics of simethicone is usually characterized by the lack of systemic absorption, metabolism and excretion from the body. This means that simethicone is not absorbed into the blood from the gastrointestinal tract, is not metabolized in the body and is excreted unchanged.
Dosing and administration
-
Method of application:
- Disflatil is usually taken after meals or when discomfort due to gas occurs.
- If it is in the form of a liquid, the dose can be measured using a measuring cup or spoon, which is usually supplied with the drug.
- If it comes in the form of drops, they can be taken directly or added to water or other liquid before drinking.
-
Dosage:
- The dosage of Disflatil usually depends on the individual needs of the patient and the degree of discomfort.
- It is usually recommended to take 40-360 mg of simethicone per dose, up to 4 times a day.
- For exact dosage and recommendations, please refer to the instructions for use or consult a doctor or pharmacist.
Use Disflatil during pregnancy
Disflatil is considered safe to use during pregnancy. Simethicone is widely used to reduce gas and bloating because it acts locally in the gastrointestinal tract and is not absorbed into the systemic circulation.
- In a review of over-the-counter drug use during pregnancy, simethicone was mentioned as one of the agents that can be safely used by pregnant women to treat bloating and abdominal discomfort due to gas (Werler et al., 2005).
- A study of the use of simethicone in combination with metoclopramide after cesarean section showed that its use can reduce the need for opioids and speed up recovery time after surgery, further supporting its safety and potential benefit when used in the perioperative period in pregnant women (Martingano et al., 2019).
It should be noted that despite its widespread use and lack of systemic absorption, consultation with a physician before starting any therapy during pregnancy is always recommended. This will help ensure safety for both the mother and the developing fetus.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity: People with a known hypersensitivity to simethicone or other components of the drug should avoid its use.
- Severe intestinal disorders: In case of severe intestinal disorders, such as intestinal obstruction or peritonitis, the use of Disflatil is not recommended without consulting a doctor.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Although simethicone is generally considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, it is important to discuss use with your doctor for specific recommendations.
- Children: Use of Disflatil in children is recommended with caution and in accordance with the instructions of the doctor or directions on the package.
- Use in Severe Cases: In case you experience severe symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, vomiting, blood in the stool or other unusual symptoms, you should seek medical help rather than simply relying on self-medication with simethicone.
- Use with other medications: When using other medications, especially medications with other drug interactions, it is always best to discuss the use of Disflatil with your doctor.
Side effects Disflatil
- Allergic reactions: In some cases, allergic reactions such as skin rash, itching or even anaphylaxis may occur, although such cases are extremely rare (Tongprasert et al., 2009).
- Gastrointestinal symptoms: In rare cases, simethicone may cause mild gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea or abdominal discomfort (Jia Ling-zh, 2015).
- No effect on certain conditions: In studies designed to evaluate the effectiveness of simethicone in the treatment of colic in infants, it was shown to be ineffective compared with placebo. This suggests that simethicone may not be effective for all types of gastrointestinal problems (Metcalf et al., 1994).
Overdose
Overdose of the simethicone contained in Disflatil usually rarely occurs due to its low toxicity and lack of systemic side effects during normal use. However, in case of overdose, some unpleasant symptoms may occur, such as excess gas or bloating.
Since simethicone is not absorbed into the blood and does not have systemic effects, serious complications of overdose are unlikely. In most cases, overdose symptoms will be temporary and may include increased symptoms of excess gas or temporary increased stomach or intestinal discomfort.
Interactions with other drugs
Simethicone, the main component of Disflatil, is generally considered safe and does not interact with other medications. Since simethicone is not absorbed into the body and does not interact with the pharmacological mechanisms of other drugs, the likelihood of it interacting with other drugs or supplements is extremely low.
Storage conditions
- Temperature: The drug should be stored at room temperature, usually 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F). Avoid storing in places with extreme temperatures and avoid freezing the drug.
- Packaging: Before use, make sure that the packaging of the drug is intact. If the packaging is damaged or expired, the drug should be disposed of in accordance with local rules and regulations.
- Accessibility for children: Keep Disflatil out of the reach of children to prevent accidental use.
