Pharmacodynamics

The active ingredients of Dexon are dexamethasone and neomycin.

Dexamethasone is a glucocorticoid hormonal substance with anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, antipruritic action. If this substance is used locally, it can reduce painful manifestations, burning, and also get rid of lacrimation and photophobia.

Neomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic with a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity. In essence, this drug is a combination of neomycins formed as a result of the vital activity of the streptomycete fungus. The main property of neomycin is bactericidal. This is explained by the effect on ribosomes and inhibition of the production of microbial cell protein. Neomycin is active against gram (-) and gram (+) bacteria, in particular, shigella, proteus, mycobacteria, streptococci.

The drug Dexon is used externally, for diseases of the eyes and skin. The resistance of microbes to the drug develops gradually and to a small extent.

Pharmacokinetics

After applying drops to the conjunctival sac area, the glucocorticoid easily penetrates the epithelial corneal and conjunctival tissue. The maximum therapeutic amounts of the drug are found in the cornea, anterior chamber of the eye, and vitreous body. Dexamethasone quickly enters the eye fluid: therapeutic concentrations are observed here for 90-120 minutes.

The anti-inflammatory effect after applying Dexon drops lasts up to 4-8 hours. The absorption of the drug into the general bloodstream when applied externally has no clinical significance.

Neomycin, the bactericidal component of Dexon, is not absorbed through intact skin.

Dosing and administration

The treatment regimen is determined by the doctor depending on the complexity of the inflammation and the reaction of the pathology to the drug Dexon.

  • To treat the organs of vision, use 1-2 drops of the medicine every 1-2 hours during the day and every 2 hours at night. After the acute phase is over, the dosage is reduced to 1 drop 5 times a day. The maximum permissible dosage is 30 drops per day per eye. Therapy continues for 7-10 days.

For chronic eye pathology, Dexon is instilled 1 drop twice a day, with a treatment duration of 14-28 days.

  • To treat the hearing organs, drops are dripped into the external auditory canal. Before applying the drops, the ear canal is cleaned and wiped with a cotton pad. The optimal initial dosage of Dexon can be 3-4 drops up to 3 times a day. After the condition has eased, the dosage is gradually reduced until the treatment is completely stopped, which usually lasts 7-14 days. The maximum daily dose is 12 drops per ear.
