Dead Sea water – what is its healing power? In its natural composition and rich content of salts and electrolytes? But we get these substances from food and drinking water. So what's the catch?
Why do tourists from all over the world flock to resorts and tourist centers located on the coast of the Dead Sea? We will try to answer these questions in our article.
Dead Sea Water Temperature
The Dead Sea is located in the desert, where 95% of clear sunny days are observed during the year. There is very little rain here. Atmospheric pressure indicators are enviably constant and are within 800 mm Hg. In summer, the air warms up to +40°C, and in winter - up to +20°C.
Temperature indicators of the Dead Sea water: minimum +17°C, maximum +40°C.
Average water temperatures in the Dead Sea:
- in spring +24°C
- in summer +31°C
- in autumn +26°C
- in winter +21°C
The salt sea stretches for more than 70 km among the Judean and Moab mountains, along the Syrian-African gorge. The gorge is so deep that the level of the Dead Sea is as much as 400 m lower than the indicative world water level.
The Dead Sea is considered to be quite old – at least fifteen thousand years old. Throughout this period, marine natural resources have accumulated more and more useful and healing properties, so that now they can fully benefit human health.

All of the listed properties allow us to say that natural Dead Sea water fights age-related changes and rejuvenates the skin.
Dead Sea Water Treatment
To treat joint and muscle diseases, a compress with Dead Sea water is applied to painful areas. How to prepare a compress: moisten a clean cloth or gauze with sea water (warm), apply to a certain place, and wrap it with cellophane or food grade polyethylene on top. Remove the compress after half an hour.
For the treatment of skin diseases, it is useful to take baths or tubs with Dead Sea water. Take this procedure for up to 25 minutes at a temperature of 38°C. After taking a bath, rinse under a warm shower without using detergents, then lie down in a calm environment for at least 30-40 minutes.
The same baths will be effective for rheumatism, cellulite, excess weight, fatigue, and increased irritability.
To treat insomnia and neuroses, it is recommended to take a bath immediately before going to bed.
Sitz baths with Dead Sea water are effective for inflammatory processes of the genitourinary region – salpingo-oophoritis, adnexitis, vaginitis. The duration of the bath is about 20 minutes, the treatment course should consist of 16-20 sessions.
Dead Sea water is also used for washing and douching, but such use requires mandatory consultation with a gynecologist.
In case of sore throat or flu, sea water can be used to gargle. In case of runny nose or sinusitis, the nasal cavity is washed with warm sea water.
Salt water is also used to rinse the mouth in cases of stomatitis or periodontal disease.
For inflammatory diseases of the trachea and bronchi, it is recommended to bring 1 liter of Dead Sea water to a boil and inhale the steam for 10 minutes.
Dead Sea water is used for hair mainly for rinsing – it is an effective means for strengthening and renewing hair and nourishing hair follicles. Hair is rinsed with salt water after washing with shampoo. After rinsing the hair, you should put on a cap and wait 15-20 minutes. Then remove the cap, rinse the hair in warm clean water. It is necessary to rinse the hair after the procedure, otherwise the salt particles will draw all the moisture from the hair and skin when drying. The result is dull lifeless hair, split ends and dry scalp.

Composition of Dead Sea water
The Dead Sea water contains chlorides of magnesium, calcium, sodium, potassium, and a large amount of bromide compounds.
The water is famous for its rich microelement composition: thanks to the presence of copper, cobalt and zinc, metabolic processes within the body are restored.
The water contains a significant amount of salts, enriched sulphide mud, iodine and bromine compounds, minerals of organic and inorganic origin, which do not oxidize even during long-term storage of water.
The chemical composition of the Dead Sea water is represented by:
- sodium – 35 mg/l;
- potassium – 76 mg/l;
- rubidium – 0.06 mg/l;
- calcium – 16 mg/l;
- magnesium – 42 mg/l;
- chlorine – 208 mg/l;
- bromine – 7 mg/l;
- sulfuric acid ions – 0.5 mg/l;
- sulfurous acid ions – 0.2 mg/l.
The ionic composition corresponds to that of human lymph and blood serum.
The content of potassium and magnesium compounds in the waters of the Dead Sea is several dozen times higher than their amount in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
The density of the Dead Sea water is due to the significant amount of salts. Its values fluctuate between 1.3-1.4 g/cm³. Depending on the depth, the density increases, which explains the buoyant effect of water relative to any body immersed in it.
Another property of water is its high pH, which is nine.
The salinity of the Dead Sea water exceeds all other sea water salinity indices. For example, the water in the Atlantic Ocean contains eight times less salt, and the water in the Baltic Sea contains forty times less. How can this be explained? Apparently, over the course of thousands of years, the water from the Dead Sea has gradually evaporated, which has led to the accumulation of mineral salts and an increase in the degree of salinity.
The water of the Dead Sea does not have any characteristic color: it is very transparent. When diving into the sea, a person experiences indescribable pleasure: it is impossible to drown in such water, because being in it, you feel as if you are weightless.
Dead Sea water is widely used for the production of cosmetic and medicinal products, and untreated water is also sold in bottled containers.

Dead Sea Water Pool
Some domestic SPA salons go further than using baths and wraps with sea water. Find out if your city has a pool with Dead Sea water – an improvised piece of the Dead Sea, created for those who do not have the opportunity or time to go to the coast of Israel.
The water in such a pool is really real, the same as in a natural spring, and warmed to body temperature. Swimming in such a pool is not only pleasant, but also as useful as in a real sea.
What you need to know before going for a “swimming” in a pool with Dead Sea water:
- Before bathing, do not shave or wax (salt water can cause discomfort when in contact with small wounds);
- immediately before bathing, visit the toilet (urinating in salt water is not only unsightly, but also unpleasant for both you and those around you);
- Before visiting the pool, do not eat to the point of bursting, but do not go hungry either (a light snack is best);
- under no circumstances consume alcoholic beverages or drugs (before the procedure, or in general...);
- Before entering the pool, you must take a shower using detergent;
- If you can't swim, don't be afraid, you won't drown, just relax and enjoy;
- When in water, do not rub your eyes with your hands (if water accidentally gets into your eye, just blink quickly);
- It is also advisable to protect your ears, so it is recommended to use special ear inserts to prevent water from getting into them;
- Don't try to swim by making sharp arm movements, and especially don't try to dive - it won't work anyway. Relax and rest;
- After bathing, dry yourself thoroughly with a towel and rest for an hour. Rushing immediately after a relaxation session is not the best thing to do. You can drink a cup of green or herbal tea and lie down to light music.
Swimming in such a pool will have a beneficial effect not only on the skin: the nervous system returns to normal, blood pressure stabilizes, and the effects of stress and overload disappear.
