Belladonna extract is a herbal remedy with antispasmodic properties. Let's consider the indications for its use, possible side effects and dosage.

Belladonna is a poisonous plant whose roots, leaves and berries contain tropane alkaloids. In medicine, it is used to make rectal suppositories. The plant extract has cholinolytic activity. Its active substances are alkaloids: atropine, scopolamine, hyoscyamine. They block m-cholinergic receptors and n-cholinergic receptors, reducing sensitivity to acetylcholine. As a result, the conduction of impulses along cholinergic nerve structures decreases.

Rectal application facilitates interaction of active components with receptors in the smooth muscle layer of the rectum. This reduces tone and relieves spasms of the rectum, minimizes pain in anal fissures and hemorrhoids.

The main indication for the use of belladonna extract is anal fissures, hemorrhoids, intestinal colic. The medicine can be used both as monotherapy and in combination with other drugs.

Release form

Rectal suppositories are a form of belladonna extract. Each suppository contains 15 mg of the active ingredient. One pack contains two blister packs of 5 suppositories each.

Pharmacodynamics

Belladonna extract has anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties. The pharmacodynamics of the drug is manifested by cholinolytic action. The herbal remedy reduces increased tone of the abdominal muscles and effectively relieves pain.

Pharmacokinetics

Since the drug is intended for rectal use, its systemic reactions are very weak. Pharmacokinetics has not been studied. But the resorptive effect of alkaloids persists for 2-6 hours.

Dosing and administration

The method of application and dosage of belladonna extract depend on the pathological condition and the doctor's prescription. Since the drug is in the form of rectal suppositories, it is intended for administration into the rectum. The recommended dosage is 1 suppository 2-3 times a day. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 10 suppositories. The duration of treatment is 5-7 days. If necessary, therapy can be extended, but after a 2-3 day break.

Use nettle extract during pregnancy

Hemorrhoids and anal fissures are problems that many expectant mothers face. The use of belladonna extract during pregnancy and lactation is possible only with a doctor's prescription. The drug is prescribed after a thorough assessment of the risks and expected benefits of therapy.

Contraindications

Belladonna extract is contraindicated for use in case of intolerance to its active components. The medicine is not used in the following cases:

• Closed-angle glaucoma or suspicion of it.
• Intestinal atony and constipation.
• Ulcerative colitis in the acute stage.
• Intestinal obstruction.
• Prostatic hypertrophy.
• Severe atherosclerosis.
• Decompensation of cardiac activity.
• Pregnancy and lactation.
• Pediatric patients.

The drug is prescribed with special caution in hypertension. Its long-term use is not recommended for cholelithiasis, diaphragmatic hernia and nephrolithiasis.

Side effects nettle extract

Incorrect use of the drug can cause side effects. Belladonna extract most often provokes the following reactions:

• Painful sensations in the gastrointestinal tract.
• Stool disorders.
• Dryness of the oral mucosa.
• Short-term decrease in visual acuity.
• Headaches.
• Decreased concentration.
• Various allergic reactions and skin itching.
• Urinary retention.

If the above symptoms develop, it is necessary to stop using suppositories or reduce their dosage. It is mandatory

Overdose

The use of increased doses of belladonna may cause overdose symptoms. Most often, patients experience reactions of psychomotor agitation, urinary retention, and accommodation disorders.

Since there is no specific antidote, discontinuation of the drug and further symptomatic therapy are indicated.

Interactions with other drugs

The herbal remedy is not recommended for use simultaneously with medications with anticholinesterase and cholinomimetic activity. Any interactions with other drugs should be monitored by the attending physician. Belladonna reduces the therapeutic effect of morphine and caffeine.

When used with digitalis preparations, the risk of arrhythmia increases. Rectal suppositories enhance the pharmacological action of tricyclic antidepressants, barbiturates, beta-adrenergic agonists and ganglionic blockers.

Storage conditions

Since the medicine is in the form of suppositories, it is very important to observe the storage conditions. Suppositories must be in individual packaging. The recommended storage temperature is 8°C, i.e. it is better to keep the medicine in the refrigerator. Failure to comply with this recommendation leads to deformation of the suppositories, which complicates the process of their insertion into the rectum.

Shelf life

Belladonna extract must be used within 24 months from the date of manufacture. The expiration date is indicated on the suppository package. Expired medication is contraindicated.
