Often a sign of increased or decreased pressure is a headache of various nature, up to the appearance of a migraine. Many of us with such pains turn to a popular drug - citramon - which in most cases successfully copes with headaches. But is it always necessary to take this particular pill? Does citramon increase or decrease blood pressure? We suggest you figure it out.
How does citramon affect blood pressure?
Blood pressure is the pressure that is created in our blood vessels and, in particular, in the arteries. This pressure is necessary so that the blood can move through the circulatory system.
If the pressure is low, the blood moves too slowly, and accordingly it carries the substances and oxygen necessary for the body more slowly. As a result: the body is usually cold, hungry, and a headache develops from the lack of oxygen and vascular spasm.
If the pressure is high, the blood moves unnaturally fast, the heart is under a lot of strain, the person feels hot, there is a noise in the ears, pulsation in the temporal region. Excessive strain on the vessels provokes headaches.
Blood pressure, as we know, has two indicators: systolic and diastolic. Systolic pressure is the pressure in the vessels that occurs at the moment of contraction of the heart, when it pushes the blood flow into the circulatory system. Diastolic pressure is the pressure indicator at the moment when the heart relaxes after systole. Thus, pressure 120/80 means that a person's arterial pressure at the moment of heart contraction is 120 mm Hg, and at the moment of cardiac relaxation - 80 mm Hg.
We will talk further about how citramon affects blood pressure.
Due to caffeine, citramon enhances excitation processes in the brain, accelerates the conduct of positive conditioned reflexes and stimulates motor activity. As a result, mental and physical capabilities are increased, and the feeling of drowsiness and fatigue is eliminated.
The degree of effect of citramon on pressure depends to some extent on the characteristics of individual nervous activity. For example, in a state of collapse and shock, blood pressure readings increase significantly under the influence of citramon. With stable normal readings, significant changes may not be observed, since along with an increase in vascular tone and acceleration of the heart, the drug expands the lumen of the vessels of the brain, heart, urinary system, skeletal muscles, etc. This compensates for the increase in pressure to some extent, but not completely: along with the expansion of the above vessels, those vessels that are located in the abdominal organs narrow.
The effect of citramon on pressure may also depend on the body's habituation to the effects of caffeine. If a person regularly drinks caffeinated beverages (coffee, strong tea, cola, energy drinks), then the body's tolerance increases. As a result, pressure may remain stable even when consuming 200-400 mg of caffeine per day. But in people who do not have a tolerance to caffeine, signs of overdose may develop already when consuming 100 mg of caffeine per day.
At what pressure do you drink Citramon?
To understand at what pressure to drink citramon, let's look at the composition of the drug. The main ingredients of citramon are: aspirin, paracetamol and caffeine.
Aspirin – eliminates pain, inflammation, lowers temperature, reduces blood clotting. Everyone knows that aspirin is often used to prevent blood clots in blood vessels. However, aspirin does not affect blood pressure in blood vessels.
Let's move on: paracetamol is an analogue of phenacetin, but less toxic. It relieves tissue swelling caused by inflammation, eliminates pain, and lowers temperature by affecting the thermoregulation centers in the hypothalamus. Again, this substance does not affect vascular pressure.
And the last ingredient is caffeine. This is where the answer to our question lies. After all, everyone knows that coffee increases blood pressure. This happens precisely due to caffeine, which has the ability to increase vascular tone. Caffeine increases breathing and heart rate, eliminates fatigue, increases mental and physical capabilities of the body, and accelerates blood circulation.
Does Citramon help with blood pressure?
We have already found out that citramon increases blood pressure. But to what extent? Does citramon help with low blood pressure?
One Citramon tablet contains 30 mg of caffeine. Let's compare how much of this same substance is contained in other well-known products that are recommended for use with low blood pressure:
- cup of ground coffee – 115 mg;
- a cup of instant coffee – 65 mg;
- a cup of black tea – 40 mg;
- a cup of cocoa or hot chocolate – 4-15 mg;
- small can of cola – 35 mg;
- dark chocolate bar (100 g) – 80 mg;
- milk chocolate bar (100 g) – 25 mg;
- can of energy drink – 55 mg.
Thus, it cannot be denied that citramon can increase blood pressure. Two citramon tablets are more than enough to have a high-quality effect on vascular tone and blood pressure.

Does citramon increase blood pressure?
Based on all of the above, the following conclusions can be drawn:
- if the body is prone to hypertension, citramon can help increase blood pressure;
- if a person regularly consumes caffeine, then he develops a “habituation” effect, in which a Citramon tablet may not affect blood pressure in any way;
- If a person suffers from low blood pressure, then citramon normalizes the pressure, increasing its indicators. However, for this it is recommended to take 2 tablets at once.
So does citramon increase blood pressure? In most cases, yes.
Citramon for low blood pressure
The targeted regular use of Citramon for low blood pressure and for its prevention is considered not entirely correct, since regular consumption of caffeine increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
It is not recommended to stimulate the body by drinking coffee and frequently taking caffeine tablets. First of all, it is necessary to find out the reason for the decrease in pressure indicators. Hypotension can be caused by such diseases as vegetative-vascular dystonia, weak myocardial function, post-infarction condition, congenital heart disease, physical overload of the body (chronic fatigue syndrome), etc.
Of course, if you take 1-2 Citramon tablets for a headache, nothing terrible will happen. But you should not take tablets without special need, or simply for the purpose of preventing low blood pressure.
Moreover, it is not recommended to take Citramon for people suffering from liver and digestive system diseases, as well as during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
It is recommended to take no more than 4 tablets per day.
Citramon for high blood pressure
Caffeine present in citramon stimulates processes in the brain and even improves mood, however, frequent use of citramon by people prone to hypertension can lead to high blood pressure. For example, taking 2 or 3 citramon tablets at a time can lead to vascular spasm and increased blood pressure.
Of course, if the body is "adapted" to a constant dose of caffeine, then Citramon tablets may not affect blood pressure readings. However, you should not experiment with your own health on your own: this requires strict medical supervision.
Let's sum it up: is citramon harmful for high blood pressure? Yes, it has a negative effect if a person already has problems with blood pressure. If the pressure is stable and within normal limits, then most likely it will remain so after taking citramon.
If the pressure is low, then taking a Citramon tablet will normalize the pressure, raising it to normal levels.
We think we have answered this question in full. Stay healthy!
